Moving to California

Cost of CFA:

First, let’s look at the cost of the CFA program. Our first assumption is that it takes, on average, four exams to complete all three levels of the CFA program. Enrollment and registration fees for four exams will cost $1,815 with early registration. The cost of preparation materials can vary widely between CFA candidates. At the low end of the price range is the purchase of study notes and textbooks. Realistically, many candidates require additional preparation such as study seminars, software, online programs, audio programs, video programs or flashcards. The cost of such a comprehensive study plan could be an additional $2,000 per year. Given our relatively aggressive assumption that all three exams will be successfully completed in four attempts, we will assume a fairly aggressive study plan with $1,000 of study material per year, for a total of $4,000 over four years. Therefore, the total cost of obtaining the CFA designation, including registration fees and test preparation materials, would be $5,815.

-That’s ASSUMING you only have trouble on the first exam which statistically isn’t the best assumption. You could easily double that price so assume $11,630. Now you just stated that you were in Law School correct? Well assuming you didn’t have mommy and daddy paying for it, an additional 11 grand could hurt your budget as you are already trying to pay student loans. I would still suggest a company paying for it!

But what do I know? I’m only a finance undergrad who’s past the first exam.

Finally as I said before why would someone who was studying LAW go for a CFA?? How much exposure do you have to futures markets? Have you studied internation accounting standards?

The CFA exam can be likened to golf. The first exam is broad and like just trying to hit the fairway. The next test is more narrow in aspect and is like hitting the ball on the green. The final test is very detailed and is like putting to get the ball in the cup.

About the CFA:

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is a rigorous, three year, three part test. It covers ethics, statistics, economics, futures and options, accounting, international accounting, and the stock and bond markets. The designation was proposed by Benjamin Graham to the New York Society in 1942 (as an aside, many people who worked in the offices of the New York Society died in the September 11 attacks). The exam is given on the same day all across the world in the same language: English. The pass rates for levels I, II, and III are 42%, 47%, and 68%, respectively. It takes about 200 hours of study time over the preceding five months, so people taking the test shouldn??t plan on getting married or having a baby during that time.

Oh and I admit I was off the mark in respect to being part of the SOA if you were going for more of the Econ or computer science areas of aspect.

It seems that it would be a good thing to get there, but I was focusing in on more of the finance areas as you were also interested in the CFA.

I did get my wires crossed there yesterday when I was researching the SOA and it seems better than I originally thought. Sorry about that. I still contest though that it’s not something very common in the finance community or even looked for it you are interested in trading.

lol after having moved from SC to Detroit for a year I agree with that picture!!

It’s not so fun seeing snow up to your bumper and realizing you aren’t going anywhere that day.

Since the OP is out of here, I thought I’d take a stab at a summary of this thread. Here are the main points:

  1. California has a lot of hot chicks and almost all of them have good tans. Even the professional working girls look good. See, e.g., October Girl.

  2. It is expensive.

  3. There are a lot of Mexicans there, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Many of them are in CA illegally, and some of these are covered in tattoos and are proficient in the use of small arms and sharp implements. That is very, very bad.

  4. California has an interesting political climate that cannot be easily pinned down to conventional doctrine.

  5. Most of us don’t know shit about accounting and have no right to question why a dude might drop out of law school and move to Cali. You dicks.

  6. People from Utah and Ohio do not think very highly of California at all. No, sir.

That about covers it. [/quote]

Good points…

And for the record, I spend years 1-19 of my life in California.

So I think my opinion is valid.

It is just crazy how many folks come here for vacation and then they won’t leave!

I’ve been to CA once, back in Dec05. San Diego. Stayed at a friend’s place in Del Mar.
Loved it.

Perhaps the shark attack today will keep some of them from moving here.

Poor guy. Brave friends though. I think my heart would have burst in my chest if I had been swimming out there and seen that shark. Although, he was swimming in an algae bloom which attracts large fish… who does that? There was even the super pod of dolphins going at the bloom. Ah well, maybe he didn’t know about the algae bloom which is bad for your lungs, ears and eyes by the way

This may necessitate an amendment to my earlier recap . . .

Cali-fucking-fornia!

Yes, move to northern CA, Bay Area in particular. I live in the South Bay and SF is 40 min north, the beach (Santa Cruz) is 30 min south, and the snow is about 2.5 hours north with Tahoe another hour further.

And, nowhere else in the world has our coastline.

LA is overcrowded with wanna be everythings!
San Diego is cool but a bit white bred for my taste, a bit republican to.
THe bay takes a certain type of person to live, not for everyone, but its my favorite city in the us SF.
MORE NORTH is just to small,

The best place to live in cali is >>>…
Manhattan, redondo, hermosa beach! its a little world in itself, close enough to LA, and far away enough. Gorgeous
woman, great weather, good gyms! what else would you need>???

Well, if I live in Ohio, my legs won’t be bitten off, though dodging gangs can be a challenge.

California is too easy! Don’t you guys get it? ‘Build your homes on the slopes of Vesuvius.’ — Nietzsche

If its nice all the time, with the sun shining and the birds singing, its BORING! I love snow and ice storms, wind that’ll fucking rip off your skin, setting fires in abandoned homes (Devil’s Night in the 313; we called it Detroit urban renewal, til the fuckers started patrolling to stop it, bastards…took away all the kids’ fun). Living in this area is a CHALLENGE and that makes life worth living! Fuck Cali and Florida and all such paradises!!

Challenge? You do remember the recent wildfires in Southern California, right? Speaking of which, I long forgot to ask how you fared in the fires, OG. I imagine you would have said something, but still; everyone aight?

Thank you for asking! My house, my parent’s and friends homes, all safe.

My dad… who is from Watts, just thought it was funny someone thinks California is all fluffy. You know, cuz Watts is so warm and fuzzy.

And HH, I grew up on a marine corps base out here. Again, not that warm and fuzzy. I think those folks manage to not be bored out here and aren’t real pushovers.

But keep up the anti-California propaganda. Maybe eventually it will work. I hope so anyways.
