I know P. Chek does a lot of phys. ball work. I used to be a personal trainer and we lived and breathed paul chek stuff. He has some good points. Is this stuff just for the out-of-shape middle aged/geriatric adult. Reading the NSCA sizzle and burn article, I got excited to see that those things are pretty much useless in strength and conditioning, But they do have their place. do you think Chek goes overboard with the phys ball stuff. Or again, should it be used with older clients that should be doing at least something? I heard from a strength coach at a major university say that when P.C. tried to do a snatch squat, he fell on his ass. I think that is great functional strength that you can’t get while standing on a phys ball.
Charles,
I am currently interested in designing a program to gain some lean bodyweight. I just started Judo and I went to put on 10lbs so I can compete in the 73kg division. I really like the lactate-threshold training that Charles Poliquin just posted but I like full-body workouts. I also like more olympic style movements and I incorporate kettlebells also. I have a high level of fitness so I am game to any ideas. I appreciate your time and expertise
Tony Robbins was right on about hitting the bottom, Charles. I can’t tell you how many times athletes have come to me for help after bombing out at the Trials or some big event.
You can’t even talk to them when they win the Utah 37AAAAA Under 27 Submasters Novice DrugFreeforLife Region XXXOOOIII Ninth Place. But when they lose: you got a new person asking questions.
Good discussion here…
This is a little risky to respond to, because I haven’t been in touch with Paul for a while and it probably wouldn’t be fair for me to comment on his current teachings, since they may have changed since my most recent exposure to them.
As far as the comment about Paul falling on his butt, look I have no idea but I will tell you he’s an absolute stud phsyically. That point isn’t really open for debate.
As for his teachings, my experience is that the more exposure you have to them, the more you become afraid to do anything for fear of wrecking your posture, etc. Eventually most people get to the point where they just kind of move on because they want to train again.

I’m not a big fan of emotional motivation, it just doesn’t do it for me. A lot of guys will get themselves all fired up, pounding their chest, and on the pitch(rugby) will be shouting “C’mon, let’s go, let’s kick some ass, etc.”. Teammates sometimes get pissed at me because in their eyes I don’t care enough because I am calm or enjoying myself even in a losing situation. I think that stems from my intrinsic optimism though.
CS, I agree with the whole spotter thing. “C’mon man, one more, you can do it…” or whatever. All that does is break my concentration. It really seems to work for some guys though.

I do think you’ve got to hit rock bottom first, at least for a lot of people. Tony Robbins says that you’ll only change when the negative consequences of your behavior begin to outweigh the positives.
There’s a lot of truth in that

Or, you can make yourself really feel the negative consequences before it hits that point.
Associate strongly enough, and you are already there. Change happens in a moment…

You know what I hate as far as motivation goes? I hate it when the spotter talks to me, especially if he’s doing some kinda “Come on, you pussy!” thing. I just don’t get anything out of that meathead stuff. To each his own though.

I completely agree. That shit just distracts and pisses me off. This is one reason why I wear headphones and have my MP3 player turned up to 24.
