Actually I’ve been doing this for over 10 years. I have an enormous following in my neck of the woods.
That’s odd. I know some guys in your “neck of the woods.” They work at a very well known training facility, and they have never heard of you. You must have established one hell of a niche.
Tremendous following eh?
Based on the information you provided on this forum(which I am sure you will manipulate to serve your next post), apparently your target clientele are “the everyday person, middle aged, little to no or even BAD previous workout experience.”
I gotta hand it to you, it must have taken YEARS to build up credibility among this group.
Thank you so much for participating on this forum and providing your much needed expertise on this topic and the many others I am sure you have made outstanding contributions to.
You have somehow managed to make this post entirely about you and your little opinions about a sport you have not even participated in.
All things considered, it is pretty easy to see the root of your self righteousnees.
I am sure your opinions rarely get challenged as it takes little effort to establish yourself as an expert when your target audience (ie. your “clients”) have not even a basic level of knowledge of the topic at hand.
Unfortunately, you are posting among a group of people with plenty of knowledge about the subject at hand, and are coming off like a complete douche bag.
Lastly, in defense of Hanley, he is one of the top Junior RAW powerlifters in his region, and is getting better every week. His “2 years” of training have gotten him further than many people get in 3 times that. He is truly just getting started, has plenty of potential, is not afraid to ask for help and has a great work ethic. Formula of a champion.
Now go back to teaching 52 year old women how to triple 135, and leave powerlifting to the powerlifters.

Somehow I wouldn’t be surprised if no one around here has never heard of them either. Small training studios are funny that way.
This post became “about me” the second my training history became crucial in getting my point across. If you read back, I was misquoted three times about the same point. I don’t like to let being misquoted and being taken out of context go without correction.
As far as my clients go, I find quite a bit of satisfaction in taking perhaps the LEAST likely people in the gym and help them to get stronger than they ever dreamed they could be. Which in turn changes these people’s lives for the better. Confidence rises. Self-esteem goes through the roof and not to mention cholesterol levels, cardiovascular health etc. all showing huge improvments.
If you don’t see value in that “niche” that’s fine with me. I really couldn’t care less.
I have and now, at this very moment train a few league-leading athletes in a variety of sports. Names you will most likely never hear of but that’s OK with me (and them, I imagine).
I’m not trying to make a name in this field as “a trainer to the stars” or to be like Joe DeFranco and his amazing group of athletes. Nor have I ever claimed that to be the case.
I do have “under the bar” experience with powerlifting, though admittedly not competitively as the whole raw vs. gear issue baffles me. I think a raw 500lb squat, a 585 deadlift and a (measly) 360 bench are OK for someone with no competitive aspirations and is more interested in all-around athletcism.
Anyone can come off looking like a douchebag in a forum such as this. When you make point after point and each time those same points are misrepresented time and time again, it can be frustrating which in turn leads to looking like a self-righteous blowhard.
I’m sure if you look hard enough, you’ll find most of us with a strong opinion and a strong desire to get it out there come off sounding like that. Maybe ME more than most, though!
Anyway, all I can do is appologize for things getting as out of hand and as off-topic as they have. I’d be the first to criticize someone else for the same things. I will continue to try and make points when I can. And when my opinion is strong enough on the matter.
But I WILL make an effort to keep things on-topic (unlike this post!)
