Errr I think the $3 million dollar appearance fees Tiger gets in England, Spain, Thailand, India and Japan kinda show, ya know, he’s known outside the US. ![]()
Name any baseball, basketball, hockey or football player that will get that much money for 4 days of work…
To add to this. I heard that Tiger will be building his first course outside of the US and I doubt he would do that if he is unknown worldwide.
Yeah, the $50 million he will probably get for it is truly a sign of not being known outside the US.
Some people are clueless…
What the hell does that have to do with golf being a sport or not?
My response and PGA’s response was regarding this genius comment “I would highly doubt that many people outside the US know or care who Tiger Woods is.”
Read the thread. Now regarding whether Golf is a sport or not Swivel made a good point as well additionally just because Golf isn’t high paced like other sports doesn’t mean that it isn’t. Tiger didn’t become Sportsman of the Year because he played another sport did he? NO.

golf is a sport. they cover it on SPORTScenter and in SPORTS illustrated. they sell golf clubs at dick’s SPORTing goods. is that not proof enough ?
No, sorry.
this has been covered a million times. sports do not have to be athletic or even physical.

MIKE TYSON would destroy ANdre the Giant.
He was way past his prime when he faught Holy.
Many would argue that he was even past his prime by the time he fought Busta… to much partying & Don King, and to far removed from the Catskills.
Many people think he peaked when he DISMANTLED Spinks. Before Tyson lost, he was intimidating as HELL. Watch his entrance to the fight with Spinks, the commentator says “EVERYTHING this guy does is intimidating!!!”
After seeing the lowely state that he has been reduced to now, it is hard to remember how he was truely percieved in the 80’s.
Rey Lewis is pretty dam intimidating if ask me, FYI.
30 is way past his prime ?
tyson was intimidating until he lost ?
this ranks him as one of the most intimidating athletes EVER ?
ali actually backed up the hype he created .
why not ali ?
this doesn’t make any sense.

I have some friends back home that are really excellent at playing video games. They would be overjoyed to find that they are considered sportsmen. They feel they can “get in the game” like no one else.
Golf is the equivalent of professional dance dance revolution.
Alexander Karelin, Mike Tyson, and Dick Butkus. And the only thing that matters is how intimidating they were in their prime. Nobody is intimidating when the’re dead. Those were 3 scary MOFOs in their prime.

My rule of thumb is that if you don’t break a sweat, it’s not a sport. There may be a few exceptions but it’s overall a pretty good rule.

That would make DDR more of a sport than Golf. Im ok with that.

As for Tiger’s intimidation…
I’ve seen him play, here at Torrey Pines, been up close to him on the practice green, watched him talk with Stevie and all that stuff.
When he walked by, everyone shut thier mouths and stood up straight. It was incredible to see.
Of course there were a couple kids who said stuff like “go get 'em Tiger” and the like, but all in all the dude intimidated the fucking FANS. Below is an example of why he is who he is, and why he carries that level of intimidation…
Oh, Wow
greatbambino03 wrote:
You are looking at his age. From a skill stand point, he was certainly passed his prime. At that point his head movement and body attack had diminished CONSIDERABLY. He was to far removed from Jerry COoney and the “peak-a-boo” styles that had made him a wrecking machine.
I must ask, do you follow boxing at all?
Ali was not an intimidating fighter. A very SKILLED fighter, one of the greatest of all time. But intimidating? not so much.
Eventually fighters just aren’t that intimidating any more. Look at Sunny Liston. He was on of the most feared HWs EVER. After he lost to Ali twice he was not intimidating, but this does not take away from how intimidating he was during his prime. The same thing can be said about Foreman. Foreman was a SCARY motherfucker before he lost to Ali. Does that mean he was not intimidating as hell at one point? No…
The fact is though, you gotta look at how intimidating these guys were when they were in their hey-day.
Sonny Liston was an ex-convict who was knocking every body out, George Foreman was dismantling guys (including Joe Frazier) and Tyson barely ever made it out of the 3rd round.
You are lookign at Tyson when he had already been exposed, but if you look at him BEFORE that, he was truely considered to be intimidating as hell. Like I said, every fighter is EVENTUALLY not intimidating, but you need to judge them more by when they were at their high point.
What your doing is this. Say there is a 70 year old guy in a wheel chair. But when he was 25, the guy was a wrecking ball, destroying everyone. According to you, THIS GUY ISN’t INTIMIDATING!
But that is the wrong way to look at it, because at one point, he was.
I mean, Sonny Liston (is dead), Foreman, and Tyson are not intimidating particularily intimidating NOW, but you need to understand how much they were at one point.
Your saying Ali was intimidating, but how intimidating was he after he lost to Trevor Berbick?
Now does it make sense?
hmm. yes i see your point. i never really saw those guys live in the moment , except tyson holyfield. so my perspective is looking back on history. your perspective, having seen the other side, events leading up to and beyond, is the more complete and accurate picture. nice post.

whatever. you can call golf whatever you want. say it’s not physical. say it’s for pussies. say your grandma does it. all that stuff is true AND it’s a sport.
sport is anything you do in your off time. which may or may not be something that makes you sweat. lots of people play poker. they are sportsmen. lots of people fish. they are sportsmen. lots of people sit in a blind and wait for deer to graze on by. they are sportsmen. they sell fishing rods and golf clubs and shotguns @ sporting goods stores. they cover those events on sports pages and on sportscenter.
the definition of sport has always been broad. very broad. you guys are trying to narrow it to mean something exclusively athletic but that’s just not how it is.

Or they just want to argue and try and piss people off. From their perspective I’d expect to see golf clubs at Hobbytown USA soon. What a joke.
I guess Tiger isnt an athlete because he won 2 Sportsman Of The Year awards (one while in college/just turned pro) from Sports Illustrated and could possibly (most likely) win his 3rd this year.
Did I mention he’s the only athlete to be awarded that twice?
I guess his ESPN ESPY awards for male athlete of the year, 3 years in a row, are meaningless also?
Tyson’s prime was very short. If you look at his early fights, when he was being trained and managed by Teddy Atlas and Cus D’amato. Tyson was a skilled fighter , he gave a lot of upper body movement and worked the body a lot.
After his departure from Atlas /D’amato he became a headhunter, w/ minimal skills. Before the Buster douglas fight they say he only trained 2 weeks.
So i count tysons prime as very brief, to me he’s one of the biggest wastes of talent Ever!
However i still think he would have matched up well agains some of the greats.
Tyson Vs Frazier. Two very similar fighters, Frazier had much more heart and desire. Tyson was stronger. To me this is a toss up but Frazier gets the nod.
Tyson Vs Norton. Norton was a better boxer but i dont think he could have withstood the tyson body shots. Tyson ko.
Tyson vs Shavers. If tyson gets him early tyson but the fight favors shavers the longer it goes.
Tyson vs Ali. Ali’s skills allow him to avoid Tysons big shots and he ko’s him in the middle rounds.
Tyson vs Foreman. In his prime George Foreman was a BEAST. Tall strong w/ heart. If you havent seen tape of Foreman / Frazier, Get it.
Foreman would have destroyed Tyson!

Well, yes i am. I think a athlete is a sportsman but a sportsman isnt always an athlete.
I think cards can be a good example. You could consider it a sport due to its competitive nature, but you dont have to be an athlete to play. IMO same goes to golf.
