Morrison injured his left hand while training on Saturday at Michael Munoz’s gym in North Phoenix. A doctor took a look at his hand and would not allow him to fight.

Morrison, 38, will still work toward obtaining a boxing license in Arizona in order to move forward with his return.

He tested positive for HIV more than a decade ago in Las Vegas, which ended his boxing career. Morrison has maintained for the last few years that he was given a false-positive in Las Vegas. Morrison has tested negative for the virus on four occasions since December.[/quote]

Me too. He has had multiple retests but from the article they all seem recent.

A 99% accurate HIV Test is more likely to give off a false positive rather than a real positive. If 1 in 1000 people are HIV positive and 99% accurate test would leave 10 false positives for every 1 real positive. But I think some, HIV tests might be more accurate these days, along with the fact that people who test positive are tested numerous times to assure that the test was a true positive.

Something sounds completely idiotic about this whole situation. Like the fact that, especially given his money and who he was/is, and the fact that he suspects his positive test was false, he hasn’t – both starting right back in 1996 and more recently, AND in between – gotten himself re-tested over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and fucking OVER, by the foremost HIV specialists in the country using the most up-to-date techniques (like the DNA-based HIV test that they use in the porn industry).

Until he’s done that, there will be a question mark there, not only in other people’s heads but in his OWN head. It’s been 11 YEARS since that first test came back positive. Clear it the fuck up already! You work with the foremost experts in the field and get re-tested enough times, and they all come back negative, then you pretty well KNOW you’re negative. It sounds like he hasn’t done that. If I were in his shoes I would’ve been doing it like my life depended on it.

I don’t know… it does seem somewhat strange.

I mean, if it was a false positive, why not go out and get some negatives right away… oh, wait, maybe they didn’t have those newer drug cocktails at that time? :wink:

I’d like for Magic Johnson to get re-tested. I think the results might be potentially interesting.

Magic Johnson has been on the drug cocktail (protease inhibitors) for years and has since tested negative, according to him. The drug cocktail can indeed reduce the HIV level in your blood to either zero or at least undetectable levels.

HOWEVER, if you come OFF the drug cocktail, the HIV apparently reemerges, so you have to stay on it for the rest of your life to stay clear of HIV. It’s not like you’re permanently “cured” and can just go off the drugs eventually.

HOWEVER, in Morrison’s case, he has NOT been on the drug cocktail. (Though he said he tried it for a very short time when it first came out, but quickly decided to nix it). And he claims that now, many years later, he has apparently tested negative.

If he were positive in the first place (and the 1996 test was accurate), then he would be positive now, since he hasn’t been on the drug cocktail (except for a few days many years ago). But he’s apparently testing negative now.

So, assuming THAT (recent) test was accurate, he looks to be negative. BUT, if I were him (and I would’ve been doing this YEARS ago), I’d be getting tested over and over and over and over and over, every few months, just to be triple, quintuple sure.
