I’m hoping to go hunting for the first time next fall. If I do, I’ll let you know which method I use and how it goes, haha.
Had he not met you at this point?
I went through a phase of trying all sorts of different animals, there was a specialist meat and fish supplier i used to get them from. They were all interesting, but none of them were good enough to get a repeat purchase. I don’t remember bison though, i’ll have to check that out sometime.
My wife’s “goddamnit face” was perfect once the words came out, haha.
I am such a fan of bison. It’s an interesting thing I’ve discovered about myself.
Alright, let’s actually talk some training here.
Got my tabata KB front squats done. 8s across, 10 on the final. Still a gasser.
Planning well into the future, I think 5/3/1 for Hardgainers is going to happen
I have prowler space now.
I love the layout of the assistance work. I very much appreciate that KB snatches are an option. I think the main the supplemental work makes sense, and I know enough dirty tricks from BtM and BBB Beefcake runs to maximize it. I plan to take all sets/reps from the floor for the pressing, I’m going to make the widowmaker set a TRUE widowmaker and make it the final movement on squat day, and bench and deadlift look dandy enough.
For the assistance stuff, I’m thinking of running it in a “circuit for rounds” format, and just do some pressing, pulling single leg/core, repeat. This sorta blends Mass Made Simple, by doing a complex in the middle of the gaining. The squat day, in particular, plays just like that.
From there, I might be wild and go straight into Super Squats. Biggest limiting factor is I would REALLY want to do the gallon of milk a day thing and I don’t think that would work for my current goals. Otherwise, maybe some heavily modified Mass Made Simple, or stick with the classics.

Burpee chins
Repeat
Notes: 90 seconds rest between benching/dips/push ups. Also got in 5x10 band pull aparts and neck work between sets. This day continues to be a snoozefest, but I get it. The more I run this program, the more sense it makes. You get kicked in the nuts on the first workout of the week, and then it just tapers and tapers so you can be recovered in time to do it all over again. Trying to turn this into something it’s not would be a mistake. I’m seeing progress all around, for what it’s worth.
That conditioning workout though? That is magic. I was able to get in my 50 chins barely within those 30 rounds. The cute name: you can see in the photo the triangle set up. I got the double KBs for the clusters, the single for the swing, and the chinning bar at the point of the triangle. You ping from the cluster to the chin to the swing to the chin to the cluster, just hitting the 3 points. And, just like the Bermuda Triangle, stuff seems to vanish mysteriously here. Specifically: rest times. I kept wondering how 10 seconds could go so fast while 20 seconds went so slow.
Took the day off from weighted vest walks, since I got Tang Soo Do tonight. KB squats are owed.
Bro that program is for hardgainers, not genetic outliers, you need to get real.
Speaking of getting real, if you ever find yourself if New England shoot me a message. I have a set of stairs and a gun safe that need moving, but running through the list of potential helpers I have available is making it seem more and more like that safe is staying put haha.
I’m actually writing a blogpost on this very thing. Early in my training, I jumped all aboard the “hardgainer” train. My logic was: if it makes people who struggle to grow grow, just imagine how effective it is for regular folks.
It honestly has panned out well, haha. And man, if I get to do ANY traveling I’ll be pretty excited, gun safe or otherwise.
This could be exactly what separates the “hardgainer” and the successful, former skinny guy, trainee.
I’ve assume that I’m genetically gifted to mentally eliminate the “genetic ceiling”.
Whether it’s true or not, I believe that I have the genetic capability to hit a >4x bodyweight deadlift and maybe squat someday if I dedicate myself to it
The question is, am I willing to put in the effort and make the sacrifices needed… probably not
This feels like an important decision for you to make then.
I’ve had a theory since i was a teenager that ~90% of people have the ability to be a 9/10 on the attractiveness scale that’s so important to teenage boys, if they were willing to do the necassary work. If only i’d had the brains to apply that thinking to more valuable things.
@dagill2 Mindset is SO huge. Part of that is just plain old blind faith as well. It’s amazing how people want to be so smart that they lose out on the ability to leverage ignorance to accomplish greatness.
@anna_5588 From my own observation, you’ve got the effort part down, but the sacrifices part is where the lacking exists.
Got the Tabata KB front squats done. Crushed the rounds. Finished with 11 on final round. Owning the weight by the end of the week. Off to Tang Soo Do
DEEP WATER BEGINNER, Week 3, Workout 5
AM WORKOUT (0335 wake up via alarm) FASTED
20 rounds of the following
3 KB front squats w/52.5lb bells
Sprint up a hill
Jog back down
Time: 51:40
Cashed out with 10 KB thrusters, then front rack carried the bells back to my truck
POST WORKOUT SHAKE
50 chins
50 dips
40 reverse hypers w/90lbs
30 GHRs
20 standing ab wheels
50 pull aparts
25 pushdowns
Notes: Marked improvement from last time. I am using heavier weight on the front squats and got in another round still. My fitness is ticking along well. Still have to fight to make this run centric. Would love to turn it into something ridiculous, but the goal is to keep the goal the goal. On that note, I need to eat more.
Tang Soo Do last night was solid. Basics week. Got to focus on fundamentals and power generation. Have to miss Friday class due to my work schedule, but such is life. I got to, once again, break our one-steps by being stupid strong. My instructor loves it. He always wants to find the solution to me, and he wants to find that solution WITH Tang Soo Do. I totally respect that.
EDIT: Got the front squats in at around 0930. Legs were still pretty torched from hills and squats, so just went 8s across.
Got in one more round of the Tabata front squats before heading into work. 8s across, 11 on final round.
Finally got around to your “Eat Like a Hobbit…” post. Amazing stuff and a truly entertaining read. I feel like I’m finally starting to get it—thanks for writing that up!
Hell yeah dude! I had an absolute blast writing it. I wanted to keep going! It’s gonna have to become a series. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the inspiration.
Sabin is such a beast. He and Kimahri from FFX are two of my favourites.
Loved his physicality and his attitude as well. He was perfect for that game. Never got into FFX. 8 kinda left a sour taste in my mouth and it just never really got better for me. I liked Zell as a character there, but the game itself was just a bit too off putting, haha.
8 certainly took a sharp left turn on disc 2 that’s for sure
