Liking all that because I had the same conversation with myself yesterday when this workout was posted…
And there goes my excuse.
Liking all that because I had the same conversation with myself yesterday when this workout was posted…
And there goes my excuse.
You up for it?
I don’t really have a choice now, do I? (Haha) It’d have to be a weekend workout for me. Maybe this Saturday or Sunday?
I’m planning to do it Wednesday, but won’t be at all suprised if it slips to Friday.
Awesome! Tag me when you’ve done it. What % BW are you thinking?
Edit: We should move over to my log. Sorry for the hijack, Pwn.
No worries dude: happy to see this inspired folks! I also posted it on the challenges thread over on BSL.
While we’re having conversations, a few notes:
The diet break has done exactly what it needed to do: these past few days I’ve been thinking “I cannot WAIT to eat big again”. At the end of eating big 6 weeks ago all I could think was “I cannot WAIT to stop eating like this”. I’m priming myself as needed.
In addition to that, whereas at the end of leaning out I felt I looked scrawny, here I still feel big while being lean. It’s allowed me to reach a good middle point. And I got to observe some training PRs through the process: call that a win.
Still think I need to get some carby cheat meals in me. I’m flat. I eat some Christmas Crunch on my squat days, but schedule needs to permit the family to all get out somewhere nice sometime.
Sleep is trending in a generally positive way. Still not sleeping like I was pre-pandemic, but part of me thinks that’s just the baseline of stress that’s increased because of said pandemic.
Still need to sit down and figure out my weights for Deep Water.
I can totally see why, funny thing is people who know would not compare but instead just realise how horrible what you just did was. People who don’t know don’t matter. ![]()
@simo74 If nothing else, it’s almost a given at this point that anything I do will be awful, haha. Speaking of…
Ended the day with Tabata KB front squats w/45lb bells. Made it a goal to get 9 squats per round. Managed it for all but the final one. Good to have things to chase.
Saw your notes on the session where you did Juarez valley and it bought back horrible memories of my sandbag squat JV session. That has to be one of the worst things I have done it ages. Then I read that you did JV twice and I just had to laugh.
@simo74 I am too good at doing stupid things, haha. This is that whole “toothpaste” thing I’ve written about before. Finished up the first round and thought to myself “I still got some left”. In truth, if I had nothing to lose, I woulda just kept taking plates off and going for it.
AM WORKOUT (0312 natural wake up) FASTED
“FARMER JOHN’S PRIZED TURKEY”
Let me describe this one.
I have the prowler set up with 90lbs loaded on it. Right next to it are 2 45lb KBs. I have a marker placed 60 paces ahead, and then another marker placed 60 paces ahead of that one.
At the start of the round, I pick up the bells and do 3 KB thrusters, then farmer’s walk them 60 paces.
Run back to the prowler, low handle push it to the bells
Pick the bells up, 3 thrusters, farmers walk 60 paces
Run back to prowler, low handle push to the bells
Pick the bells up, front squat 3 reps
Keep the bells in the front rack position, walk 60 paces
Front squat 3 reps
Keep the bells in the front rack position, walk 60 paces
Front squat 3 reps
Set bells down, run 120 paces back to prowler
Get prowler to the bells. I rotated this movement. I went high handle push for the 1st round, backwards drag second, high handle push third, forward drag fourth, then repeated that whole sequence
That is ONE round. I did 8 of them in 50:58
Ended the workout with KB front rack walking lunges for 10 paces, drank my post workout shake, got home and did the following
50 dips
50 pull aparts
40 reverse hypers w/50lbs
25 pushdowns
20 standing ab wheels
Neck work
40 burpee chins in 5 minutes
10 chins
Notes: That was like THE prowler workout. I caught some prowler flu bad. Breathing hard, doubled over, lots of swearing. With Deep Water coming up, the prowler is going to feature less in my training, so I wanted to really get in something good here, and I absolutely did. Name is based around it being a lot of Dan John inspired stuff, farmer’s walks with the bells, and a modified “Eagle” workout that, in turn, I’ve dubbed “The Turkey”.
Seriously though, this was magic.
Where you are, it’s too cold to be going into deep water. You’re gonna need to bring an auger with you next time… you know, in case the surface freezes over
@Andrewgen_Receptors Nothing to worry about: my body temp runs so high during the training that I’m sure I’ll just melt through, haha.
PM WORKOUT (1900)
Tabata KB front squats w/45lb bells
Notes: Got 9 reps each round. Awesome. Also, Ironmaster got their KB handles back in stock so I ordered a second one. This GREATLY expands my KB options for the future. I’m excited about that. I’m actually thinking of running Deep Water with KB cleans vs barbell at this point. Time will tell.
AM WORKOUT (0345 wake up via alarm) FASTED
“SNAKEHANDLER MASS”
3 front squats w/225
4 log viper presses w/135
5 burpee chins
19 rounds in 51:20
POST WORKOUT SHAKE
20 standing ab wheels
40 reverse hypers w/50lbs
50 pull aparts
25 pushdowns
Neck work
Notes: Moving slow today. Got to be late last night and just feeling beat down from that helluva prowler workout yesterday. It’s dawned on me that I’m squatting in some manner pretty much every day. Saw my quads in the mirror and realized I’ve got some gnarly teardrops developing. I’m at stupid levels of lean too. Been on the break too long most likely: I am SO ready to eat. This was a great experiment.
19 rounds was a PR as far as going the distance goes. My time markers were WAY off, so I just went for max pain. Slightly twinged my left trap around round 16 on a log viper, but it’s more an annoyance than anything.
Got Tang Soo Do later tonight, although they canceled classes last night, so it’s up in the air. No real structure for this week. I’m thinking about taking Tabearta to some sort of horrible conclusion, and then maybe doing a weighted vest incline treadmill walk.
Alright, so let’s talk about Tabearta
AM WORKOUT (0341 natural wake up) FASTED
TABEARTA
40 minutes of Bear complexes with 95lbs at 20 seconds on/10 seconds off
First 40 rounds: 2 complexes per round
Next 10: 1 complex per round
Next 10: 2 per round
Next 4: 1 complex per round
Next 16: 2 per round
POST WORKOUT SHAKE
50 dips
20 standing ab wheels
40 reverse hypers w/50lbs
50 band pull aparts
25 pushdowns
Neck work
37 burpee chins in 5 minutes
13 chins
Notes: The deload madness continues. Ever since I did this for 10 minutes I knew a day would come that I’d make a whole workout out of it. 40 minutes of 2 per minute is now a goal to chase. Reminds me of Kalsu: you start strategizing. Got some hot spots on my hands after this, but otherwise not too worse for wear. 5 minutes of “recovery” with 1 complex per round was more than adequate.
Burpee chins were moving slow, but that’s to be expected.
Tang Soo Do was a gasser last night. Lots of focus on forms and basics. After all the training I’ve been hammering, it was tearing me up good.
I have the day off work tomorrow. Might do a weighted vest incline treadmill walk in the morning after some sleeping in. Don’t really have any other marks to hit for the week.
I was stupidly lean this morning. Always good to have that info in the back pocket. No matter what, I am always 7 weeks away from being peeled. And that’s WITHOUT suffering.
I have to admit, I have a long term goal of being as in tune with my body as you are with yours. Being about halfway through a cut (which usually ends up meaning <50% due to diminishing returns) has given me a good bit of insight about myself… Mostly that I dislike counting macros and eating the same thing day in/day out.
Once I’m done with my cut, I’d very much like to become nutritionally in-tune with what my body needs such that I don’t need to count macros. Any tips on where/how to get started with that? Will happily read a few books on the subject
P.S
This is sheer insanity
Appreciate the nod to the insanity dude!
For myself, eliminating carbs really made things easy. One less macro to worry about. Once you do that, you have 2 macros to play with: fats and protein. And that REALLY means you have ONE macro to deal with: fats. Because protein is going to stay pretty consistent when gaining or losing. About the only difference is I will PRIORITIZE protein when weight is dropping. So if given the choice between nuts or meat as a snack (for example), I’ll opt for the meat while losing and the nuts while gaining.
Otherwise, my life stays about the same, and I simply eat more food when I need to and less when I don’t. I have what I refer to as nutitional “thou shalts”, because I noticed that, when I cut them out of my diet, bad things happened. The two big ones are that I eat 4 whole eggs every day, no matter what, and I get in 4oz of grassfed red meat.
Beyond that, I employ what I refer to as “bookending”. I eat a BIG breakfast (which is really one of many early morning meals, but this is the big primary one) and a big late night meal, and those 2 meals cover a LOT of my nutritional bases as far as protein and fats go. From there, I have wiggleroom in the middle of the day to play around with things.
Unfortunately, not liking eating the same thing day in and day out would be an issue with my approach, since that’s pretty much how I live. Dan John refers to it as “Shark Bite habits”. The decision is already made, so it’s one less decision TO make. But not eating carbs ALSO kind of makes that decision for me. It leaves meat, eggs, nuts and veggies on the table.
And every Friday I have some sort of protein bar pop-tart knockoff, because life is short, haha.
Always happy to expand dude! Feel free to ask any questions.
Appreciate the insight! I believe i’ve read more than a few comments from you regarding Dan John, specifically about dieting approach (correct me if I’m wrong) - any suggestions on where to start? Most of his stuff appears to be paid content. I don’t mind paying for good material, I just don’t want to end up paying for the wrong material lol
You may be meaning Jon Andersen. Dan John has a great dietary approach as well, but it’s not terribly actionable. “Eat like an adult” “Avoid cardboard carbs and Frankenstein fats”, “Eat 8 vegetables a day”. Those are all good things. Jon Andersen is the low carb focused strongman though. He did an AMA here recently. John Meadows “Mountain Dog Diet” is great as well.
