I’m too happy these days to worry about anger, haha. My life is going awesome! But in that regard, some folks at the training hall ARE there working out some anger, and then I get hurt, haha.

Sorry to hear that some training partners go too hard. That’s the beauty of grappling, you can go hard and not hurt each other.

I’m glad you’re happy/life is awesome but that doesn’t really add up I’m afraid! Sorry for speaking out of turn but genuinely happy people don’t just want to bang. That’s what the people suppressing their aggression/anger want to do.

I think my colloquialism isn’t transferring here, haha. “Bang” means spar/roll/fight here. I don’t care to train: I just want to do! Haha.

I’m with you on the sparring and rolling; that’s the best bit for sure. That’s most of my training. Hence I don’t understanding why you don’t like training!

As an aside - with all the meat and eggs, the guts is all ok? Are you adding in any fermented foods etc sporadically in there?

@raven78 Thanks so much man! And the complete opposite: the fermented foods were totally blowing up my guts. Once I cut out all fiber, all fruits, all veggies, my digestion FINALLY righted itself. I can’t believe how many DECADES I spent not knowing what “normal” felt like. I DO have some pickles when I’m in a famine, but that’s about it.

  • That’s a rep GAINED from the start of the cycle, and let’s keep in mind that earlier this morning I squatted 185 for 77 reps AND I am in a famine phase where I had a 13 hour fast prior to this. Holy cow this protocol is downright magic.

  • That said, I was totally done once those pulls were over…and yet what I picked afterwards was downright horrible. Ya’ll need to give that one a spin. 100 reps of Klokov presses will light your shoulders on fire. And, of course, poundstones afterwards, because it’s a high rep kind of day.

You’re tempting me here, I’ll want to get lean for my cruise in May, but always find the mental switch hard, growing up skinny makes my mindset very much perma bulk, is this the protocol that allows for both?

I’m also curious, because I’ve seen your dietary discipline over the years and it’s pretty legendary, what do you think the protocol adds/addresses that wasn’t there for you before?

Agreed: warm ups, drills and technique practice suck. But learning moves and sparring is great fun. Same as weightlifting: you get strong by lifting heavy weights (not by doing warm ups and drills). You get good at fighting by sparring.

@simo74 We are absolutely the same tribe: no question. If I get over to your neck of the woods, lets feast on some roo. You get over here and I’ll blow your mind with some piedmontese. And in either case, we’ll train until we bleed.

@alex_uk Really happy to discuss. I’ll say that there is no need for discipline for my approach: this is about returning to what is natural. Instinctive. It’s meat and eggs, when hungry, until not. Do not season the food: you should not need to “trick” yourself into eating. If you’re hungry: it will taste delicious. If it doesn’t: you’re not hungry. Don’t eat when you’re not hungry: that’s unnatural. Salt is granted as an exception, as that’s a mineral vs a seasoning, and we are a salt-seeking life form (as are most mammals).

So with that laid out, regarding “does this allow for perma-bulking”: this protocol simply allows you to achieve your body’s idealized “you”. Since you’re eating in a natural way, you take on your natural shape. BUT, after years of eating “unnaturally”, there WILL be changes: they’ll simply be the ones necessary to achieve that outcome. Someone that is overfat will find that they lose fat: someone that is undermuscled will build muscle. The body will become what it was always supposed to be.

That, matched with the training (180 minutes a week picking something up off the floor and putting it over your head) will continue to help realize what you should have always been: awesome.

@thegentleway Always enjoy a good spar/roll with a good partner for sure. I’m the same way with strongman: I don’t care to train for it at all, but I dig competing. Hell, I’m that way with running too: I just show up to the race and go. Training is cheating! Haha.

50 minute workout

EMOM, do 3 Viking thrusters w/95lbs on axle, then 6 prisoner squats and 6 push ups

Notes:

  • Felt some quad soreness this morning upon waking, but nothing like I’d expect after the squat effort yesterday. I’m going to attribute that primarily to nutrition and all the daily squats. It’s really been pretty incredible: my ability to recover. Hell, I’m putting weight over my head at LEAST 5 days a week, and often 7 days a week, and my shoulders are doing just fine. My right shoulder is a little clicky these days, but I attribute that more toward dorking it up a touch on my grappling competition, which I went to with zero deload and just called it a training day. This has been a fantastic GPP protocol, because I am absolutely ready for anything. All that said, I DO think I’m going down with a slight cold. Just got that general crummy feeling.

  • I genuinely despise thrusters, which is why I did them. I could see myself avoiding them in all of my workouts. Viking/landmine thrusters are at least a good compromise, as they can allow for some fatigue/slop without disastrous outcomes, however cleaning the handle into place is make or break.

  • This is like Kalsu flipped upside down: open with thrusters, then do bodyweight work. I went with prisoner squats and push ups so I could sneak in my daily totals. That originally wasn’t the plan (because Chaos is), but after the first round I realized that if I went for 6 reps instead of 5 and pushed for 50 rounds I could make it happen. So 150 thrusters and 300 squats and push ups…the day after 77x185. F- -k I am so stupid.

  • Story behind the name: Our Cimmerian once again finds himself under lock and key with the Aesir, but in their battle with the Spartans he finds freedom, so long as he swears a new loyalty and endures their rigorous training. So keep form on those push ups!

EDIT: Another way I’m real stupid is I found ANOTHER burger challenge in town that I’m seriously contemplating…

Only 30 minutes to eat this, vs 45. But it doesn’t have any onions, compared to that last beast. Also no fried eggs, bacon or peanut butter. But it DOES have a lot more bread. I already have a strategy in my head…but I also told my Valkrie I was retired after that last one…

I’m a big fan of carnivore as well. Like you say it’s liberating to reconnect with natural hunger/satiety and digestion. It’s very eye opening to realise 90% of what is in the supermarket isn’t food. The other big one for me was how amazing your body is at regulating blood sugar levels if you don’t spike it with carbs: the stable energy and mental clarity is really cool. I was pretty strict for first few years (I did include a bit of cheese and butter) but I eat veggies/some fruit now. The research on gut microbiome is pretty compelling.

@thegentleway Much appreciated dude. Being more trouble than I am worth is still a solid vector, but these days I am happy to just be more awesome than I was yesterday. And I DO call these training sessions. Which, in turn, I absolutely hate them, haha. You can pretty much see the misery on my face through it all.

I asked the restaurant direct and yup: gotta eat all the fries too. On my last challenge I had to do that, and by the time I got to them they were cold and pretty not awesome. But ketchup helped.

Absolutely eye opening with carnivore. It’s crazy how my brain doesn’t even recognize much of what is out there as “food” any more. Like a tiger looking at bamboo or a panda looking at a gazelle: it’s just not food to me. To something else, sure, but not me. Meanwhile, put a beef rib in front of me and I lock on like a shark! Haha.

I am digging the philosophical lens with which you approach nutrition. I have been reading a book on Taoism. The idea of allowing things to happen rather than trying to force them is a paradigm shift for me. I like the approach, with one exception. I have recently rediscovered BBQ sauce (sugar free) and am not ready to give it up.

@The_Myth Always appreciate you swinging by, and glad you can dig it. Philosophy has definitely been a boon for this journey. Too many folks went into the exercise science direction, and never took the time to appreciate how much of this is about the mind as it is the body. And there’s no question that sugar free BBQ sauce is delicious, haha. I used that to get me through the dozen eggs a day with Building the Monolith. But I tell you: after enough time without the stuff, you really learn to appreciate food for food. Marty Gallagher talks about this: getting away from artificial flavors and becoming a “super taster”. When we bombard and lambast the taste buds with artificial flavoring, it gets numb to the signal and we have to keep “upping the dose” to get the high. Same way obese people have to eat more and more to get that dopamine response. But the further away we get from it, the more the body “remembers” just how good this stuff is. I used to slather ribs in sauce, and I learned that I was just using the meat as a sugar delivery mechanism. Now: the flavor of the meat is SO fantastic.
