More Movies You've Watched This Week

Funny People - Caught it this past weekend with the wife and few friends. I could see how some are dissapointed that are accustomed to Apatow. But it wasn’t mindless as some make it seem. I enjoyed…plenty of immature jokes and quips that were funny, imo.

Sukiyaki Western Django - Watched it on Blu-Ray. This movie has flown under the radar for the most part…considering that Quentin Tarantino “presented” it…and is directed by Takashi Miike(Ichi The Killer).
This was like a Kill Bill Western. An “ode” to spaghetti westerns…Japanese style…all actors spoke good English. No dubbing or subtitles needed. Plenty of twisted humor, cheesiness, and action. Pretty much a “live action anime.” Tarantino even has small role in the movie.

A little different than what Miike is know for. I was skeptical that it would be all cheesiness…but I liked it. But then again,it depends on your tastes. If you like Tarantino/Miike…Japanese humor…old westerns…anime…you should give it a look.

Adventureland - Had no expectations for this movie. It was slow in the beginning but it picked up and it was pretty funny.

Observe and Report - Not as funny as Adventureland. It is your typical Seth Rogen type comedies, but decent non the less.

Knowing- actually liked this. GF didn’t like the ending, but made sense to me

The Hangover- watched it again, still hilarious

Forbidden Kingdom - o.k. for a kung fu movie.

Role Models - better than what I expected it to be. Elizabeth Banks did not look as hot as she normally does, but then again she IS my age.

The Tale of Despereaux - good, especially considering it is a children’s movie. I am finding that I like animated movies more than I used to when I was younger. E.g. Incredibles, Kung Fu Panda, Cars, etc…

Fast and the Furious - I had high hopes for this movie with Vin Diesel being in it, and I was pretty disappointed. Lame story, some good action and driving scenes, but not much else.

Watchmen - I was lost in this movie, I had difficulty following the story. Good movie overall but being clueless didn’t help me at all.

rambo - crazy good. sly is the man.

Same here. I loved the 1st FTF, but the latest one sucked major ass.

Miss March- below average, but had a few good laughs, some nice boob scenes.

It had Paul Walker in it, so the movie was doomed to suck.

Watchmen gets better the more times you see it. Do you have/rent the DVD copy with the “Ultimate Movie Experience” option? It has incredible commentary and short documentaries that explain a lot.

As for my entertainment experiences of late…

Burn Notice I went to the International Comic Con a couple weeks back and saw a Q&A panel about this show. It seemed like a lot of fun so I picked up seasons 1 and 2 when I got home and was very happy I did. The show is awesome. There’s gunfights, MacGyver inventions on the fly, and great stories and dialogue. Now I’m pissed I pretty much missed half of season 3 already. Since it’s set in Miami, one dream episode would be Michael Westin investigating the disappearance of someone’s family member…who happens to be one of Dexter Morgan’s victims.

Knowing was good. I don’t usually think deeply about “End of the world movies” but this one made me really wonder what the fuck we would do as a species if that happened. It also made me wonder about the likelihood of something even close to that happening in reality. Not having a “happy ending” was fresh as well.

I liked Nick Cage when I was a kid but movies like Ghostrider and The Wickerman started to make me think he had lost it. I am glad he picked a good role with this one.

Watchmen should be watched in pieces. It took me three days to get through the Director’s Cut (watching about 30-45min at a time) and that helped me really get into the story. I did not like how some of the guys looked in costume though. It looked silly at times and none of those people looked very “Super” physically even though I liked the Comedian.

I watched Knowing a few weeks before it came out and i thought it was pretty good. I mean it stepped out from the norm and like Prof X mentioned got you thinking deep at times. The end was refreshing to. No happily ever after, which is real in a lot of peoples lives. Movie was a bit of a emotional roller coaster for me. I like.

Hangover - I put as one of my top 3 movies this year.

Gran Torino - I’ll add this one to my current top 3 also. Clint Eastwood came off as his usual bad ass self. Story line was great, grew on you and the ending was surprising. This movie is modern, yet has a classic vibe to it. Get sick of CGI loaded movies sometimes and this was a break. Yet damn hate how they made the Mexicans look like bullies. Were not all like that hahaha

Watchmen - Holy awesomesauce. Great movie. I came in never having read the graphic novels or even knowing what it was about, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Long one too… Clocked in at over 2.5 hrs.

Funny People - I found it quite enjoyable. The back and forth between hilarious dick jokes and quite serious subject matter worked for me, surprisingly enough. I just felt the story was dragged out too much, it should have ended much earlier than it did.

I saw the Half Blood Prince last week, and that was decent. However, like the last two it falls flat in the end. They could do such a better job building up the drama, but for some reason the filmmakers don’t do it. The Prisoner of Azkaban is still the best HP movie. [/quote]

And the best book IMO.
I was a huge HP fan when I was 11/12, but even though I got older and didn’t read the books anymore, I still read the new ones when they came out(albeit, only once)
IIRC, Half-Blood Prince was the worst of the books. Very long, drawn out, nothing happening and damned frustrating to read.
So when I say that this film is the best of the HP films, it means volumes.

It was very, very well done. A very dark movie that was still immensely enjoyable. I found the comedy elelment to be well executed also. The 3 main characters are certainly showing how good they can be now.

Also, I’m not normally into crazy murdering psychopaths, but Helena Bonham Carter was fucking hot in that movie.

I got seasons one and 2 of The InBetweeners as well on the strong advice of my sister and friend. With only 6 episodes per season it didn’t take me long to get through it. Save for a few bits of comedy gold, I was pretty much disappointed with the show.

Zeitgeist: Everytime I watch this movie, I become a bit more suspicious of, well… everything.

300: I was away for the weekend with friends for a concert and one of them brought this on his iPod. Took me three days to actually get through it thanks to the interruptions but that mad eit no less awesome. I always feel like running around in my underwear with a towel around my neck beating the shit outta things after seeing it

Duplicity - Didn’t really like this. Just boring, and not very funny at all. I like Clive Owen as an actor though, I wish he was in a few more films.

Watchmen - I was pretty confused like others. I did managed to keep up with it but it got a bit weird at the end but it was a pretty damn good movie. A good change of pace then the typical stuff you mainly see now.

Notorious - If you like his music, you’ll probably like this. Did a pretty good job of re-inacting the events, although since he died in like 1995 or something, it was weird they were all using modern mobile phones.

Just came back from seeing Moon.

terrific movie, so far my favourite of 2009

Caught up on things in my life and watched a few movies. Here goes.

The Pianist - Didn’t think I’d like this, but it turned out to be a pretty good film

Alien/Aliens - Never seen any any of the Alien movies before this. Alien was good, but Aliens was great. It was over 2.5 hours so I thought I would get bored and restless, but the story was paced well enough to build the suspense and keep me interested. Very good movie.

Hot Fuzz - Not as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it had it’s share of wacky British humor. Would have been a lot better if they cut down the first half.

This Film is Not Yet Rated - Documentary on the MPAA rating procedures. Had some interesting parts, but nothing spectacular.

The Kite Runner - I liked this UNTIL the Taliban acted like the Keystone Cops. The looked themselves in their building?? One man and a kid outran these guys?? Come on.

I Am Sam - This was good, but a little too forced for me. It started out sweet and weepy, but the emotions just became too forced. After the halfway point, I was numb.

Step Brothers - What a steaming pile of shit. This had potential and it did get a few chuckles from me, but overall it was shit. Parts of it were embarrassingly bad.

Heat - Very good movie. Good cast and excellent work by Pacino, De Niro, and the rest of them.

Damn you only watched this now? Everything about this movie is awesome, one of my all time favourites.

That’s what happens when actors go full retard. Ask Tugg Speedman, 2008 with Simple Jack.

Ha. true. there were so many good lines in tropic thunder.

Funny People: Thought it was a mature approach to terminal illness and rekindling old relationships and acquaintences. I’m a huge fan of Leslie Mann, she’s really funny but she brought a real vein to her character. Eric Bana was really good too. He’s always so reserved so it was cool to see him act in the buffoon role.

I do thing that the whole “karma realization” scene was a little over the top, kind of tied everything up in a bow and it didn’t sit well with me. It’s a strong 8/10 for me, I had a great time watching that film.

Stand By Me: Great old film, getting almost too old though. The performances are really starting to seem forced and coached the more I watch it.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: Man I dig this movie so much. Redford and Newman are the new great old actors in my mind. It’s funny, it’s relatable, and it’s still holding up. Only hit against it was that Burt Bacharach scored it, and that damn scene with Butch and Etta on the bike with “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” playing make me fast forward through that scene. The special edition DVD from 06 has a good “making of” documentary where the director reveals how they got the bull to charge (spraying a substance on his balls) and how they got the mule to trip in the final showdown scene. Neat way to see how some of those old westerns were made back in the day.
