Shit. Ten years with the same company and I just got laid off. Fuck.

Damn Pete, Hang tough bro. Maybe show them your avatar pic, might make you feel better.
This is not the news I would want to hear. Can I help in any way?

That sucks… this whole fucking deal just sucks!
Was home with the kid (small fever) and got done via conference call. Got a few months severance. Thanks for the support guys, now maybe I can take some time to figure out what I wanna be when I grow up…

Fuck twice. Sorry to hear that.

Shit - decent companies avoid layoffs in this season and certainly don’t do them via conference call. Good news at least on the severance package.
sometimes these things lead to a better job. one that you may not have taken the leap to do. Now you don’t have anything to lose. Still… that really sucks bro.
things have a way of always working out though. i’m sure you will come out the other end stronger and happier.
Sorry brother, that sounds like my old company when they laid me off (Big Network Gear Company that is not Cisco). They pretty much did the same thing. You will come out better for this in the end!
Thanks all. This year w/lack of bonuses, etc. I was already on the prowl. My wife even left a note to me this morning saying ‘maybe you can have some time today to job hunt’, lol. And I hadn’t been happy with that job for awhile, but it was a steady paycheck. Colin, interested what company that was, I am in a paarrallel field, and there are only a couple of competitors to the big C. Some of which my (former) group installed.
Colin, feeling a little dense at the moment, figured it out with all your subtlety…
Pete that is fucking bullshit
hang tough and find the silver lining

I was a Data Architect (WAN) for Nortel when they had 92,000 or so back in 05-06 I survived the first 5 rounds of lay offs. By the time I got laid off they were down to 25,000. These guys were whacking whole buildings full of people. But in my case it was all good too because I hated the Sales thing. I am way to honest to be a decent sales SE, lol. I am back in Support now and loving it. I make a whole lot less money but I am way more happy!
Just catching up, that sucks Pete. I bounced back and forth between a sense of panic and a sense of liberation. This is the first time I’ve had more than a 7-10 days in a row off in 15 years, and I am really enjoying it. It also forced me to make some tough decisions that should have been made some time ago. My unsolicited advice is get a plan together, but try and enjoy yourself a little as well. Things will work out. They always do.
Believe it or not I trained today. The wife came home early, she works there as well and witnessed the lay offs and thought she needed to hold my hand or something, and I entirely pissed her off by saying I was off to train. Some comment about how I am obsessed, what I do isnt healthy yadayadayda…
Well, today was supposed to be a continuation of my high rep deload stuff. However, that wasn’t what I felt like doing at all… Now, everytime I pull heavy under stress I end up hurting myself, so I called it a day a little short of true ME:
Conventional DL 155 x 10, 245 x 5, 335 x 5, 425 x 5, 515 x 3, 565 x 3
Well short of PR land, but enough for training stimulus and to get shit rolling again with my pull.
Pull from 1 pin against doubled minis: 225 x 3, 315 x 3, 405 x 3, 495 x 3.
I have been daydreaming about doing these for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I figured how I was going to rig the bands; taking two hex plates per side I simply thread the bands through the ‘handles’ on the plates and strap to the sleeve. Who knows how much tension but that 495 felt really heavy through out, and it taught me to pull faster, which is part of my problem.
Shrugs 4 sets up to 545 x 12?
ab wheel 4 x 15
weighted GHR 4 x 10-15
Happy with the training, the 565 x 3 felt comfortable, more in the tank. My BBer friend (same one who told me I was squatting too deep a while back) said it looked like I was just playing with it. I have done I think 605 x 3 as my current 3 rep PR. But as I stated, several times in the past I have injured myself while trying to pull a PR when ‘not all there.’
Then took the kid to the mall for santa picture, and to get a new cell phone, have been using a company one for 10 years, guess that is over:)
Seeing a lot of silver linings already. For the interim we will actually save money, on daycare, etc. Also the wife has kind of decided we are dropping our high end commerical gym membership, she can do her thing at home or the work gym, I will be between barbell clubs and my much cheaper PL gym, which I haven’t been using. I might look at a reduced rate commercial membership just to keep my older boy going but not sure.
I have already put a few feelers out regarding new opportunities. In fact I made a call to one contact 15 minutes after my bullshit conference call. What really got to me is they knew I was at home with the kid, they started laying it out to me, fine, but then kept talking when he was crying about wanting to watch a DVD. I knew they could hear him. I said politely, firmly, ‘Hold for a minute guys, I have something important to take care of’… I can laugh now, and I am glad I did that.
Colin, I worked for a Mitel/Intertel/NEC/eXtreme/Cisco dealer/installer, that was consumed by a large CLEC. Actually I started under a different company in the CLEC side, eventually moved over to equipment, got purchased after we did a bunch of purchasing, now there has been a reduction in the equipment side… I can bitch about my ten years, there were some people at 20 let go today.
Glad I did the gym/santa picture thing. It delayed any bourbon consumption until now… but will have a few tonight. Can’t tomorrow anyway, because I have an important ‘bench date’ Saturday a.m.
Thanks guys…
Pete- Sorry to have read the news. Wish you all the best in landing a new gig! Hopefully, one you will enjoy.
Pete, sorry about the news. I second what everyone has said. I’ll have a drink or 10 for you tonight. I’m not benching tomorrow.
Sorry to hear about the lay off, Pete. Hopefully it will be the catalyst for bigger and better things.
30 minutes on the elliptical, while watching Episode IV. Son’s first time watching.
Going to the market next, then maybe I will have tea with the neighbor and look into joining a book club.
In all seriousness I get to go pick up my crap from the job later, and do some hand offs. Found out that as of today they are no longer matching 401ks and cutting everyone’s salary. Good times…
