eating has been hit or miss due to travel, had to run to grocery store to buy precooked chix breasts sushi and couscous to make up for infrequent crap. trained at commercial gym today, bench assist, more details later, train squat/dl in am, will post details sunday, huge changes or opportunities have come up for meets and training partners more details when not typing on phone

Thursday checked emails after long day of driving, and had two important ones. One was to inform me of an upcoming meet, Feb 20th, local, that looks to be APF rules, not entirely sure of the sanctioning body. It is one week after the one I was thinking about, and much more interesting, so I am commiting to it. The same email offered me an opportunity to train at a private facility (about 40 minutes away) of a WPC world record holder. The second email was another opportunity to train at a private facilty (about 30 minutes away) of a world record bencher and elite lifter. Going to see how I can balance these out.

Friday did some training at a chain gym in north Chicago suburbs, same chain I belong to here. Didn’t feel like breaking out bands, etc, so did a bench assist workout:

Close grip bench: worked up to 315 x 10

CSR worked up to 5 plates x 10

DB Bench 100s x 15, 130s x 13

rolling tris w/minis 3 x 10 w/90s

flys 3 x 10 w/80s

rope down/extensions 3 x 15 each

Hammer strength preacher 5 x 10

cable lateral 3 x 15

cable front 3 x 12

shoulder horns 3 x 12

cable abs 3 x 15

Nothing to failure, except the DB bench

next morning I got up bright and early after not sleeping well on a crappy pull out couch. My body ached. Drove 30 minutes north of where I was to Monster Garage Gym. Met Eric Maroscher, one of the owners, said I was planning on just pulling but just signed up for a monolift squat meet, and I am a monolift virgin. There were some other guys just showing up to squat and they were all happy to let me work in. Didn’t use my suit, went raw like this:

145 x 10, 235 x 5, 325 x 5, 415 x 3, 465 x 3, 505 x 2, 555 x 2, 595 x 1, 615 x 1

615 was easy, but with something like 5-8 guys taking turns on the mono almost 2 hours had passed, and some others were waiting to get in.

It was awesome working with a bunch of guys who were pushing there squats, and getting depth calls and form cues.

I wrapped up with RDLs 325 x 5, 415 x 5, x 5

I squatted both the day before driving down and the day before driving up. Sore hips and pchain makes windshield time a tad uncomfortable, just so ya know. And thank god they sell muscle milk at every fricken gas station between Minneapolis and Chicago, about the only quality protein I got.

There’s my turkey weekend, will get caught up with everyone’s threads later.

Benched tonight.

But first a note on training partners. Mine have been pretty good for Bench night. Up until the last couple of months. Lots of excuses. ‘oh, I hurt myself at work’. ‘Oh, my grandma needs me to drive her’ etc. We all have lives. But if you are serious about entering PL meets, you better train to get stronger all the time. Sure life can get in the way, but every other week? Or three weeks in a row? You just missed a whole training cycle.

So I was already ready to dump my Monday night bench guys this week, especially since some other things are lining up. The only one who has been showing up with any regularity is the guy that cannot really train anymore, and that is injuries due to an enviable 25 year run in PL. But then, at 4 o’clock, when we are supposed to meet at 4:30 (which always turns into 5) I get the call: no one can make it, the fucking sky is falling.

Whatever.

So I went in and trained solo. Worked up to 485 x 1 with oversized shirt on. Planned on 505 to break that barrier but I had to train in spotters on the spot (so to speak).

Side note on shirt: I am in the process of ordering a new shirt, and when I told the guy I am ordering from first my dimensions, then what I am benching in it, his response was that I was basically training raw. Shirt is 3 sizes too big for me. Not that I believe him entirely, but we shall see.

485 went up fine but then I lost that group of spotters. Then did 315 x 12 sans shirt. I realized I was holding my breath for all 12 reps. Saw stars after.

485 was 10 lbs over my last full range single, which was in July. So a PR I guess, but still want to get the 505 in that crappy shirt.

Finished with:

JM presses 315 x 5, 325 x 5 (5 lb PR)

Laterals 4 x 10-20

Decline abs 3 x 15.

Going to do my best to deload, and start serious meet prep, with some environment changes, beginning next Monday.
