Don’t you ever worry about missing a squat when using squat stands though? Or does the fact that you cant drop it on the pins make you try that bit harder?
I do worry about it, so I always test 90%+ to 1RMs at a gym where there’s a squat rack or power cage. Anything up to 90% I’m pretty confident about and so don’t sweat it. I’m pretty certain I can let the weight down to bottom and then dump it with a bounce from there, too. Should practice that, maybe.
I’m planning on getting some saw horses so I can continue to make max attempts at home though. I really need a power cage to do the supra-maximal training I like to do - just can’t justify the space or expense right now.
Yeah, I’m not that brave either. I had to dump a squat a few weeks back (wasn’t a heavy single, but just couldn’t make the last rep I tried), and was really glad I was in a rack. Remember, when it comes to used lifting equipment, Craigslist is your friend. Start looking now, since it’ll be a while before something decent shows up, but when it does you’ll be ready to jump on it if the price is right.
And as for lifting in commercial gyms, I cannot imagine trying to do that at this point. We have a 1/2-assed gym at work (Olympic weights, but no rack of any kind; just a Smith machine) and even in that environment I find the skinny dudes following the Men’s Fitness program-of-the-week to be too distracting when I’m trying to deadlift something heavy.
Plus, I can fart with wild abandon in my own garage.
Call me weird, but sometimes I like the crazy energy of the gym.
Farmer Brett had the same question I had about squatting off a freestanding rack like that with no safeties. It makes me nervous to watch you. You’re far, far braver than I.
Everytime I see your videos, I think you remind me of someone. You didn’t star in the Canadian “Anne of Green Gables” series, did you?
I miss the old free standing racks. Could put them in close and get the hands all the way out to the collars. Racks, squat racks take off about 6 inches on each side. How are you at DIY? Several home made racks running around on some of the forums. Failing that, mattresses behind you.

I’ve got a ton of cinder blocks and couple of old Oly bars and I’m thinking of jerry-rigging something out of that. all I need something is something about 32 inches high, which seems to suit for both bench and squat. Benching is what I’m most concerned about, although the weights I’m doing certainly won’t kill me if they don’t ascend…

That’s some stout lifting. I suspect you were inspired by the lady playing tennis with herself.

Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
Regarding lifting in a commercial gym, I miss it and will go for an outing from time to time. I love having a nice set up at home but I really like the people watching aspect of a commercial gym. If you aren’t a really social person, it’s a nice way to be around people without having to invest anything more than watching them.
It looks like you’re really solid with everything.

Personally, I could never squat without rails/safety bars because I am horrifically capable of missing a squat at any given pussy weight.
Thanks MizzO.
I do get some chuckles from the commercial gym, but when people are competing for the Darwin award using me as the evolutionary selector, the fun stops for me.

Me too. In a purely heterosexual way of course. (funny how us guys always have to put that!).
I love your form (God, it is starting to sound a bit gay!) I mean technique. You can learn so much more from watching a 30 second video than reading page after page of workout logs.

Keep them coming.

Near as I can tell, your squat form is better than mine. I tend to let my hips rise faster than my shoulders, especially when my bottom parts get tired.
Vids are great - particularly for those of us who have no training partners.
I love your vids, too, but only in a purely man-love, homoerotic way. Makes me want to start doing ass pullups again. Ok, that’s out of the way. You may have already posted this but what are you openers and your secretly hoped for lifts? Don’t worry, won’t give you any pre-meet pep talks.

Here’s what I’m thinking:
SQ - 345,370,385
BP - 235,250,265
DL - 445,475,495/500
I’ll go for more on the thirds if I’m feeling it. If I’m not feeling it on my seconds, I’ll skip my thirds except for DL. My experience is that my bench crashes after the squat in a meet so if I get 250 I’ll be ecstatic. I’m going for a total, not a record. Haven’t had a total in a live meet as yet and the conditions are very different from the virtual meets I’ve done. My main challenge is to not get too excited between lifts and save my nervous energy. I do hope to get charged up for the lifts themselves, in my own quiet way.
I just read an article on openers by Wendler and one of the things that stuck out is his belief that most lifters are pretty much spent after their second attempt on deads. He goes heavier on deads on his opener relative to his other lifts and then goes for broke on his second, and usually just passes on his third if he hits it. I thought this was interesting and made sense.
Trying a wider grip on BP. Weight feels better coming off the chest.
Squat depth is really good according to the vids. Even in the last set.
Between the DL and clean for the press my upper back got plenty of work, so no assistance today. Plus it’s still tired. Got plenty of gas in the legs and lower back on deadlifts, but upper back is pooped for some reason.

Yes - I was Anne.
The corsets were awfully uncomfortable.
I laughed way too hard at this. I think I must be tired. And then read Harry’s post. And that made me laugh harder.
Enjoyed your vid. Your lifts look strong and you appear very confident with them.
