Modifying My Training Program

Hi guys,

I’m pretty decent at switching most programs around to meet my personal needs. However, there’s one I’m a little stumped on, and would like some advice from anyone knowledgeable enough to help.

I’ve been doing WS4SB for the past few weeks, and it’s not quite working well for me. Size, and oddly enough, strength gains for me are better on volume based vs intensity based workouts.

So, I’ve decided I’d like to try the old German Volume Training out. However, I’d like to add a second back workout, as I feel working vertical pulling and horizontal pulling is neccessary for balance. So basically, instead of day 1 being bench and pullups, day 2 being quads and hips w/ abs and day 3 (work days) being a lot of arm work with a few sets for shoulders, would it be okay to do day 1 as horizontal push and pull, day 2 hip and quad dominant w/ abs, and day 3 vertical push and pull w/ a lil arm work?

I’m basically curious as to the back portion. It’s a 5 day split, and horizontal push/pul as day 1, legs and abs day 2, day 3 off, day 4 vert push and pull, day 5 off, then repeat. Is 10 sets of chins 2 days before 10 sets of rows too much?

Anyone who could be of help, I’d appreciate it.

I did GVT in December of last year. At first i had the same reservations as you…i wanted to train upper body push and pull in both horizontal and vertical planes equally.

However, in the end i figured Poliquin knows a thing or too so i followed his split almost exactly. So yeah i did way more upper body vertical pull than horizontal pull, but its only for 1 cycle…in my case 4 weeks. I dont think your going to develop any imbalances to worry about in that time.

ps, the split he laid out was perfect for me in terms of recovery. Any more volume and i think my progress would have decreased not increased.
So its your choice…but my inclination is too stick with the trainers split.

he is just putting a response so the article remains on the first page. You put bump because, well…that is what you are doing by responding, you are bumping the article up to the first page. It’s just forum etiquette.

Just try it out for two weeks and see if its too much volume… theres only one way to really find out and thats by doing it

Very true. I did just do a 6 day program recently that went up in volume as the weeks went on, with rows one day and chins the next. Wound up being 30 back sets total for the last week, 5 each day, and I was okay, so hopefully it’ll be alright.

Thanks for the advice guys.
