Mmatt's Log

Um so I just skimmed through your log. Holy shit you’re strong. I especially liked the cougar story. Jealous.

What do you eat, and what do you attribute your amazingly quick progress to? ARe you still doing ROTC and are you planning on going into the military? Amazing.
Thanks for reading. I’m not strong at all, I’ve just got a decent pull because of my monkey arms.

As per the eating question: too much is the simplest answer. I aim for 350-400g of protein a day, and everything else kinda falls where it lies. I’m working on leaning up right now, so carbs and some fats are being watched and reduced, but not eliminated. I’ve got a pretty busy schedule, so not much time is spent on food prep. Once I lean up to where I’m comfortable, I’ll probably be around 170lbs or so. I’m really not a big guy at all.

I wouldn’t say I’ve had quick progress, there’s a lot of guys who are a lot stronger and bigger than me. The main things I would attribute progress to is my training environment and mindset. I’m an officer in the Clemson weight club, and my friends in the club help me a lot. They don’t really keep me accountable or anything, but they got me started off on the right foot.

Per mindset, I really hate failing. Like I get physically upset if I don’t get a PR. I’m getting better at containing the tantrums that ensue after a bad lift, and they always stay in the gym. I don’t take baggage with me home. I used to have really bad anger issues as a kid, and lifting helps me get the rage out.

I’m still in Army ROTC, in my MLII year. I’m not contracted yet, but I do plan on commissioning. I don’t like a lot of the things we do in ROTC, but at the end of the day, I’m really happy I’m in it and I can go to bed feeling somewhat proud of myself.

Sorry for the long post, I’m kinda tired and not feeling very concise.

Good football, good PRs, looks like you had a pretty good day.
Thanks bud. I didn’t realize it til today, but 2 of Clemson’s better football players sit with me in my theatre class. They fall asleep too so I feel less bad about not paying attention.

I realize you’ve probably already mentioned all this, but as I mentioned earlier I’m a bit late to the gangbang. You ARE strong, and you’re awesome lol. How tall are you, and what do you weigh now?

I’m about 5’6 1/2". Sometimes I get 5’7" on a PT test if they’re feeling generous. I’m waking up around 182 or so now, and walk around at 188-191 lbs. I used to be pretty fat as a early teen, so I carry the vast majority of my fat around my waist.

9/18/11

CGBP 2.5x245
Dips 13x+45 PR
BB Curl 6x135 PR

Not sure if close grip was a pr, but it wasn’t that great. Have another vid today because I was bored and whatnot. Probably going to do some cardio later.

9/19/11

HS Iso Row 5x225 PR
HS Shoulder Press 11x90 PR
Face Pulls
10 min. hard cardio

Energy was pretty low today, so volume stayed low accordingly. The rows were uglier than I would have liked, but they’ll improve.

I liked the vid my man. Those dips looked good. Strong CG pressing as well.

Thanks bud. My pressing is awful and I could use pointers on how to improve my technique.

9/20/11

A.M.
Rack Dead(from right below knee) 5x585 PR
NG Decline BB Bench 1x295 PR
Pushups 30,25,20

Not bad. I ran for the first time in like 3 months at PT this morning and did really well considering. Got bored after classes so at about 1700 I did this.

P.M.
Deadlift 5x485 PR

So, 4 miles of running and 2 lifting sessions in, I still managed to break all kinds of pr’s. Procrastilifting is awesome.

WTF Rack pull PR in the AM, then Deadlift PR in the PM…fuuuuuuu!

Sick work as always brotha!

Thanks bud. You’re doing well on the pressing and what not.

9/21/11

WG SMP 3x5x135
Seated DB Curl 13x45 PR
a. Rope Cable Curl
b. Rope Cable Ext

Really drained today after yesterday. The smp was really easy and just to get some blood in my shoulders. Stretched everything out and did some mobility work.

Gahd PRing in the morning and night? Awesome stuff man!

Despite the likelihood of sounding like a complete dork, I was wondering how you go about with your training. I like how it appears pretty simple and straightforward. Plus you’re obviously getting stronger it’s clearly working.

I don’t see why it’s dorky, talking shop is always fun for me. I don’t have a set schedule for any of my lifting. I sometimes plan stuff out a day or two ahead in my mind, but that’s about it. I PT twice a week with my ROTC unit, so I take that into consideration when I lift. Also, like this weekend I’m doing pushup crew for the football game, so I won’t be doing any pressing on Friday(gotta look good for the rally cats). That’s about the extent of scheduling I’ll do in terms of lifting.

I usually hit movement patterns/muscle groups at least twice a week, if not more. I don’t do a whole lot of volume, at least in terms of sets, so I can get away with doing high intensity stuff every day of the week usually. I usually focus on certain things for a couple of weeks, and they’ll get hit more often in that time frame. Right now, I’m working on my deadlift, so I think I’ve hit it like 3-4 times in the last 6-10 days. When I’m focusing on something, be it a movement or a muscle group, the rest of the body isn’t neglected, but it is dropped a little bit to accommodate the focus.

As per loading/sets and reps, I always try to break a PR, unless it’s a recovery based day. I changed rep range, exercise, angle, hand grip, etc all the time, so I can always get a PR.

I know this probably isn’t an optimal way to train, but it’s how I like to do it.

I almost pooped my pants on the floor dead pr, so I think I earned it.

9/22/11

A.M.
NG Flat BB Bench 7x230 PR(really lame PR)
Dips 2x+90 PR(less lame, but still lame)

P.M.
NG BB Row 10x385 PR
WG Pulldowns
WG Chins

Thor was angry with us this morning, so PT was inside. That means suicides and a shitton of pushups, hence the terrible pressing today. Came back and redeemed myself somewhat with the tugging of the afternoon.

9/23/11

Beltless RDL 3x365, 7x405 PR
Seated Leg Curl
Band Leg Curl
BB Curl 11x115 PR
Low Cable Curl
Rope Cable Curl

All about both biceps today. Pretty fun times.

10/7/11

Deadlift 3x525 PR
CG Pulldown 15,15,15,12,15
Seated DB Curl 10,10,10,9,7
WG Cable Row 10,10,10,10,10
Rope Cable Curl 20,20,20,15
DB Shrug 12,12,12,12,12
Forearm work

To the possible 2 people who follow this log, sorry for not posting in forever. My only excuse is that accounting is hard. I’ve still been lifting and eating, and do I have a story about eating from last night. My ab has healed up, so that’s allowed me to start running and doing ab work again. Hopefully having stronger abs will see my lifts go up.

Deadlifting went well today with a pretty big pr. This will probably be my last heavy session before a PT test on Tuesday.

Also, I’m looking at trying out some new supplements so if anyone has any suggestions, shoot em at me. I’m real dumb at stuff like this, but leucine seems pretty cool.

Good stuff man. How big of a PR was it? I for one would be of no help regarding supps. I just eat, a lot.
