MMA-World Class Strikers?

I was just over on Amazon.com and noticed that they have both Pride and K-1 DVDs for sale. The reviews are pretty complimentary.

On a side note, I’m a new fan of MMA and am still sorting out the differences between the various leagues. I’ve been told that Pride is more of a ground game and grappling league while UFC emphasizes the striking and “spectacular” knockouts, at least toward the casual fan. Is this a fair assessment? Also, how does K-1 compare to the other two?

Wrong way around. Pride uses a boxing ring and allows stomping the head of downed opponents and knees and kicks to the heads of a downed opponent, which greatly benefits strikers. They also quickly restart the fight standing up if there are any lauls in the action.

They can also penalize fighters with yellow cards if the action is too slow. Each yellow card is a 10% reduction in fight pay, so it hits them where it hurts if they try to stall.

The UFC benefits wrestlers because they can use the cage to keep opponents on the ground, and they dont allows stomps/kicks/knees to the head of downed opponents. They do allow elbows on the ground (Pride does not), which is beneficial to wrestlers because it makes ground and pound much easier.

K-1 has three leagues, two of which are K-1 and K-1 MAX which are kickboxing/muay thai only (without elbows). The best strikers are usually here, or at least start here and move on to Pride (Mirko Crop Cop and Mark Hunt did this, and are conisdered to be two of the very best strikers in MMA).

The other K-1 league is called Hero’s. This is an MMA league that is similar to Pride, except that it is more of a circus sideshow right now when compared to UFC and Pride.

I don’t own any UFC DVD’s, but if you want to check out a Pride DVD with some recent fighters I highly recomend the Shockwave 2004 DVD. A lot of the best guys are on there like Fedor, Nog, Silva, Hunt, Gomi, Cro Cop, Randleman, Yoshida, etc. Randy Couture provides great commentary on the fights, along with Bas Rutten and Mauro.

K1 is primarily kickboxing but they do have a growing MMA league called K1 Heros. Pride is the most international of the MMA orgs right now and on the whole has better fighters than the UFC. UFC is primarily North America and Brazil with the occasional foreign talent. Pride, K1 and UFC are all entertaining in my opinion and have their pluses and minuses.

If you have a netflix account I suggest you rent the old Pride’s and Bushido tournaments along with UFC events. The old Pride events can be somewhat boring, but later on they implemented a warning system whereby fighters would get their fight purse reduced if they didn’t push the pace of the fight.

UFC is a little more brawler/knockout oriented but there’s still a lot of talent there as well. Check em all out, it’s pretty much all good.

I’ve always liked watching Silva lay a beat down on folks… His fight with Mezger was a good example of striking expertise.

Igor Vochanchyn was awesome. Has he fought lately? His hands were like cannons. I remember Bas Rutten commenting during one of his fights that Enson Ennoue had equilibrium problems for 6 months after fighting Voch.

As for the K-1 dvds they have them here in Japan. And they have most of the Pride dvds and Hero’s dvds in the video stores to rent. One of the Gold’s Gyms near my house plays mma 24 hours a day on one of the tvs. No UFC though, just Pride, Shooto, Pancrase, ZST etc. Another of the gyms near my house I have seen alot of the Pride and K-1 guys train. Lifting weights and sparring, they have a full size ring. If you ever go to Japan it would be a good place to see them train.

Where are you in Japan? My girlfriend is going there in a couple of days. Maybe I could get her to pick up some dvds for me.

I live Shinagawa-ku which is like saying the Shinagawa district, which is in the Tokyo area. Usually TSUTAYA has both a rental store and a store that sells new dvds. Sometimes BOOK-OFF has some used dvds. Remember in Japan dvds are more expensive than they are in America, if money is an issue. Tsutaya has branches everywhere.

As long as you get to the Tokyo area you should be able to find one. Narita isn’t in Tokyo it is in Chiba. Tokyo is about an hour away by Narita express. Another good place to go is Akihabara. The main place to get electronics.

I dont suppose you would know of a store or area where one can get dvds coded for North American players?

Your best bet would be Akihabara. I hven’t heard of Japanese Pride and K-1 dvds being coded for America though.
Thanks for the suggestions. We have code-free dvd players here, I suppose thats an option. Oh well, will work something out.

I was a world class stroker until I was 17, when I finally got laid.

amazon has 3 k-1 dvds listed, 2 arent available, the other is k-1:europe, released this year, but the regional code is unknown so it might work, might not.

No problem. If your girlfriend runs into any serious problems in Japan please tell me, I will try to help.

i forgot to add Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis (Davies?). His hands looked great in TUF 2, shame he never got to let them go… theres a great highlight package floating around of him. Mind you, everyone does look good in a highlight package…

Well having a big wrestling background, I have to go with my man Matt Hughes. The man showed his stuff by whooping Gracie’s ass; thank goodness, someone put that man in his place! Anyone with that big of a head needed a good knockout! I didn’t see too much about the UFC on here, guess I’m the younger crowd going for the latest and greatest thing.

Not sure if anyone is watching the ultimate fighter 3 but there is a deaf guy on there that has made it to semi-finals. While he needs a lot of work, I think he could be the next world champion. Not to mention any handicapped guy that has the balls to step in the cage and throw punches with the best of them I have huge amounts of respect for!

Um…this is a thread about world class strikers, not wrestlers…
So I take it you aren’t into the UFC? I would say Hughes is a good striker, he did just knock out the legend of BJJ.

Hughes worked him over with ground and pound. When I hear “striker”, most people consider that to mean the stand-up aspect of MMA. Hughes is average on his feet for an MMA guy, but nowhere near the former boxers and kickboxers discussed elsewhere in here.

I would agree with all of the above, his best skill is his wrestling, however I was looking to make the point that in my opinion the guys of the UFC are better than boxers. Boxers only need to worry about punches coming at them, and when throwing the punches, they do not have to worry about a guy catching his punch or kicking him in the face. Boxers are too one dimensional for my taste, but that’s just my opinion.
