My friend Jane trains there a couple times a week. Tall guy, right? Blackbelt? Sister fights MMA?

Question here:
How many rest days do you guys have a week?
As in where you do absolutely nothing.

none.
If I start to feel run down, I’ll take a complete day off.
Last one was Christmas day. Before that I can’t remember.

I’m in cleveland. Oh, not long at all, as of yesterday 2 months. I was looking for something and DD suggested fighting, and now I’m smitten.

I haven’t popped in here for a while, sorry. I train on the eastside too, RGDA with Darren Branch. [/quote]
I trained with Darren for about five months last year. Great school and a great guy to train with.

No, Jeff is a brown belt on the shorter side. Here’s the website:

ahh, my mistake. She’s a west sider and it’s Mark Stefanac…never mind…
Went to my first MMA training session last night. Started with a circuit of various things: medicine ball squats, dummy flips, pushups and crunches, sprints, skipping rope etc. I got some time to do 1 on 1 pad work with an instructor and I found out my boxing is terrible. The footwork to keep moving and making angles feels really unnatural, but I think it will come with time. We worked bask. 1,2’s and the basic roundhouse kick. It was also pointed out that I don’t use my reach to my full advantage.
After training I attempted to roll with some of the guys, more try and fit in and get to know people seeing as how I have no bjj skill. Both guys I rolled with were very strong and I think hey used it a lot to try to overpower me. I seemed to be able to defend almost all their subs and I even got a sweep on one guy. Overall I saw some situational things I’ll keep in mind next time. I can’t wait for training tonight.
I apologize for my noobness but I just wanted to share and I think my g/f gets tired of hearing about MMA all the time.

i’m embarrassed on the internet!

Good for you, rugbyfan! Smart move sticking around to roll, that is how we really get to know each other.
Sooo happy to be back on my regular training schedule after the holidays!
Hour 1, private with the owner, working combos & teaching teachniques. I was thinking I was getting worse at teaching & getting insecure, but he says I’m getting better & that’s why he’s getting increasingly nit-picky about any small error. So now the harsher he is, I guess the happier I’ll be!
Hour 2, level 3/4 - bob & weave, slipping, back kick & spinning back kick. Drills & light sparring.
Hour 3, yoga- I can do a handstand finally - yeah, okay its still against the wall!
Hour 4, MMA - worked Bas sidemount & regular BJJ sidemount, keylocks & armbars. Rolled, with light punches wherever you see an opening. I got popped in my open eyeball, like a dork, but whatcha gonna do? Gotta keep going. So happy I finally jumped into this class! The guys have been great, no he-man woman hater’s club.
Thanks Miss Parker. It’s fun but I can’t wait to get some more training so I can stop getting tooled all the time. Although even from my first to second day I was able to see more oppotunities and think about what I could improve next time.
The other thing that gets me is how fast everyone is, or atleast seems to be. I’m sure they’re not going all out in practice but it seems like their hands move at light speed and I’m going in slow motion. I now see why everyone cautioned me so heavily about going into my first fight with no formal training. All I can think is that if this doesn’t make me a great fighter when I go back to my next fight nothing will.
I’m still trying to figure out how to work a couple days of weights into my training schedule but by the end of the week I should have a better idea. I know for sure that I’ll be adding in some stuff to work on my neck and traps. We did some headstand work against the wall last night and my neck just couldn’t take it the whole time.

Why’d you switch schools?
Oh, and I hear you guys had a really good seminar on Monday. Did you go?
1st hour private lesson with GB & Miss C, prepping for rank test which may not happen now.
2nd hour level 1 helped out in class instead of taking it, class was just huge due to January resolutionists. Unlike the regular gyms, most of ours stick around for several months. I’ve noticed that the largest fall-off period for students seems to be after they’ve earned their first belt.
Ended that class doing choke defenses in the parking garage, definitely added a more sinister flavor to the class.
3rd hour level 2/3, mostly worked inside defenses.

Darren’s classes start at 9pm which was great when I started but then the schedule at work changed so it wasn’t working out for me. I miss training with him and I call him now and then.
Stafanic had the seminar with Robin Giesler and he is Jeff’s bb too. I hear Robin is squared away. I don’t train at Stafanic’s school anymore because he kicked me out (we agreed to not get along).
I like Jeff’s school a lot because almost everyone there is my age and everyone takes it easy. Just like at Darren’s school.

Yeah it does get really late, I didn’t get home 'till 1:30 last night.
Opps, I was going with the you’re at Jane’s school line of thought when I wrote that. Pile me into dd’s group, lol.
It’s good that you found some where that compliments you, that’s an important part of training!
Only 2 hours today, yikes.
1st hour, level 1. Worked with a new woman who came to us after doing 2 years of kung fu. Great, go-for-it attitude. Lots of palm heel strikes, groin kicks, & choke from the front with a push.
2nd hour level 2/3, combos ending in knees or round kicks, then spent the rest of the class working gun take-aways. Gun defenses are my Achilles heel. I take longer than normal to become reasonably good for some reason, and they’re painful because when they rip the gun out of your hand, well, its painful. I’m a wussy girl. ![]()
Today was a mixed bag. The gym owner brought in a muay thai instructor. He gave us a little history which was cool. We got some really good work on kicks and checking kicks. Then it came time to spar. 1 on 1 sparring went pretty well. It was light and we got to work technique. Then they split us into groups and each grouped sparred with one guy sparring every guy in the group for 45 seconds then another guy would go through everyone and it took about 5 minutes for each person to spar everyone in the group. I did ok until my turn to spar everyone.
The second guy I had is pro and I took a hard kick to the bottom rib and it was like I couldn’t breathe. I actually tried to quit, but the guys pushed me through it and I’m thankful that did. I got caught a couple more times and got a nice little shiner under my left eye. It sucks that I felt I got rocked by everyone, but I know now I need to keep moving and I can’t just square up and go toe to toe or I’m gonna get KO’d. I did do a much better job of cutting off quicker guys angles and using some 3-4 punch combos so that’s and improvement. I just have to keep moving on those short power hitters and not let them get into my space.
I’m really happy with the guys I’m training with because they really helped me push on when I would have let myself quit. I’ve just got to keep my hands up, my chin tucked and my feet moving in and out next time and I’ll be better.
Anyone else have one I those days where they just feel like they’re getting rocked by everybody?
Yes, God, I was just thinking about this! I need to develop more pain tolerance & mental toughness.
Sounds like you have a great group rugbyfan! Roundrobin sparring is tough, good for you for not quitting.
I think we could all use a little more intestinal fortitude. It was really funny after practice because the guy who’s pro really gave it to me turned out to be a social worker and he’s a really nice guy, just in a fight he turns it on 100%. I don’t think he means to go hard he just has a ton of power and a lot of fast twitch muscle so when he let’s stuff fly it really flies.
The fun part is I’m student teaching and having to explain my black eye to my students and collegues. I just say “I play rugby”. It’s not how I got my black eye, but it’s not a lie and it’s a bit more socially acceptable. I’ll use that as my excuse, atleast until I can get an actual teaching contract.
hey every1,
i stumbled upon this sight and forum a few days ago and have been emersing myself with so much info its almost over whelming.
iv been an mma hobbiest for a lil over a year now training in muay thai, bjj and mma.
this year tho, i want to take training a lot more serious and look to maybe hav a fight.
stats: im 25yo 5’8 a skinny lean 67kg which is roughly 147lb.
my week generally consists of:
mon: pm- mma
tue: am- lift
wed: am- cardio pm- mma
thr: am- swim
fri: off
sat: lift
lifting mostly consists of clean n jerks, squats and benches. i also do some core work with medicine balls and physio balls.
cardio i usually make a 4-5 station circuit with light high rep lifts and body weights.
iv found Chad Waterbury’s hammer down strength and endurance and want to incorporate it full time as follows;
mon: pm-mma
tue: am- HDS pm- HDE
wed: am- swim pm- mma
thr: am- HDE
fri: am HDS pm- mma
sat: am- HDE
sun: off
i do want to bulk up to around 73-75kg.
is this too much or too little? and what kinda supplements does every1 take? i only take a whey protein at night before i sleep.
any feedback will be very appreciated as i am in australia, where mma is stil relatively still quite young.
