Hmm. So you’re lifting 5 times a week?!? I would cut the extra isolation stuff on Tues/Thur. After all,I imagine those muscle groups get enough work on your three"powerlifting" days. Especially your shoulders. They’re always the first thing to go when too much volume is a problem.
If this truly works for you,so be it. But you might want to think about what your training priorities are. Just a friendly suggestion.
Sorry for the plug but I feel its the least I can do considering all the help he has given me, but if you like what you find on his websites I can’t recommend his books highly enough- I got Infinite Intensity at the New Year, and I can’t believe the bargain it was for 20 something quid.
I had a really good training session tonight. I am still just drilling the basics, but I am starting to feel more confident on the mat. Drilling an Americana from side control, and a simple escape from side control to full guard tonight was the first time I have begun to get a feel for how I can use my body shape to my advantage, which is something I hope I can continue to develop. Even managed to land the Americana while rolling, which was a first for me, although the blue belt I was sparring with basically let it happen. I was happy though!
Not such a good session today, the techniques were far more complicated and i really had to walk through them at snails pace. We were working from a turtle guard, drilling the clock choke and working to an armbar and another choke I didn’t get the name of.
Maybe someone can tell me the name of the choke we worked on- from side control, left arm round the neck and gripping the lapel, right knee into the side and right arm gripping the trousers, then left knee up behind the head and rolling back, pulling your partner across your knees. Any ideas what its called? All I know is that when the blue belts cranked it on it was seriously deep.
If you smack a guy in the balls hard enough, he will stop choking you.
I was doing my teacher training (still at it) & was working headlock from the side with the owner, Daddy J, & at the end of the hour he told The Gentleman & Spike, “I want to see you two attack her hard 10 times in a row, as soon as the defense on one choke is finishing, the 2nd attack is already beginning. Go!!” So they jumped on me.
Unfortunately for Spike he was not wearing a cup. The defense includes a groin strike, so I tried smacking him on the thigh to avoid hurting him, but he just kept squeezing the life out of my head anyway, so I nailed him. BWAHAHAHAHA!
Yeah, my neck is a little sore, but probably not as sore as his balls, because he had to choke me 5 times. Sigh. Yes, you MMA guys probably can guess the defense doesn’t end there, but once he loosened his grip on my head the takedown was much easier.
The Gentleman was a harder task, as he had protection & he’s no gentleman, but the technique works, so I was able to pull it off in the end.
Also Daddy J showed me a new defense, in case the original doesn’t work & I get taken down - a strong possibility if a big guy surprises me. You go with the momentum & roll out, landing on top in sidemount for strikes.
It looks hard but its much easier than the standing defense - the BJJ training is finally paying off a bit!

In reality groin strikes are not high percentage. It is a small target (usually) and easily defended.[/quote]
Yeah, well thanks for raining on my parade.
Okay, I’m being silly - it just happens that this particular defense uses them when you end up in a particular position on one particular type of headlock that leaves the groin exposed.
So I did it, because it is required for the technique, and I didn’t hit him hard. He’s my friend. Though I confess I was taking wicked pleasure in it, maybe because he was choking the shit out of me. He was just following orders, though, he was told to go hard, & since he didn’t respond to my strikes NEAR the groin, I let him have it.
I actually feel worse about the eye poke, which was a complete accident.
Pretty intense two hour session tonight, I am officially not the newest person anymore. There are a few new people, and I got to roll with two of them. I often get the feeling when I spar that I am being outmuscled, as well as obviously being new and unskilled, but this didn’t really bother me as everyone was more experienced. But I got overpowered by one of these new guys, who was way stronger than me but totally unskilled. Does this mean I need to get stronger or that I need to get better?
I’m thinking I need to get better. As they say, a black belt is a white belt who never quit, right?!
Also, I love the crouching in a box tip, & will start using it today. Jack Dempsey rocked.
And Roundhead, thanks for that saying about a black belt being a white belt who never gave up. I’ll be using that with my students when they get frustrated with themselves (and saying it to myself for the same reason.)
Awesome session today, learned loads. It was just me, Sensei, a blue belt and a white belt, both of whom competed at the European BJJ championships in Lisbon. I got loads of one on one help, loads of coaching and loads of sparring. As I said, I learned a huge amount, will have to try and get to that session as often as possible.
Tell you what though what with last night’s two hours and todays 90mins, which I am sure isn’t a lot for you experienced guys, I am glad I have tomorrow off!
Yesterday I was finally back to a regular training schedule.
1st hour, teacher training.
2nd hour, level 3/4. Partnered with Spike, whose balls I was smashing a couple of days ago. We were working inside defenses & he was being a sweetie & taking it really easy on me because, you know, I’m a girl, and I said, “Spike, please go harder, I need to be able to do this in real life.” So he did. So about 15 seconds later he got one past my defenses & I got a bloody lip. We just stared at each other bug-eyed for a second, then started cracking up laughing. Watch what you wish for!
3rd hour, yoga.
4th hour, MMA. SO much fun. 15 minutes of exhaustion drills on the heavy bags, then padwork, then groundwork.
Today I had a private with the Gorgeous Bastard & Miss C. Just worked gun defenses & hostage rescue for the whole hour. Frankly, we were all in the mood to screw around & so we played with toy guns instead of working up a hard sweat.
Sooo much fun. I love tuesdays. Gorgeous Bastard taught teacher training, then next hour was level 3/4, again with GB.
After that, 45 minutes of yoga. This is the funnest yoga class ever. Everyone tries really hard to master the poses, but we’re all on the way either from or to a fight class - usually both - and so we just rip on each other and talk trash and laugh the whole time. Its a blast.
Last hour was MMA & HALLELEUJAH I actually tapped out a man twice. Finally. He tapped me out on our 3rd go, (heel lock) but it took him freaking forever, so I don’t care, I’m happy!
One thing I’m loving about this teacher training is they’re not just teaching me how to explain techniques, they’re teaching me to lead. One of my instructors, a former Army officer, loaned me this huge textbook from his West Point days called Leadership in Organizations & its pretty interesting. Spike has been attending every teacher training session as well, even though he’s not going to teach - and it finally hit me today, he’s preparing himself for his Marines officers’ training camp this summer by studying leadership and instruction styles. Smart boy.
After months of being told I’m too weak, too feminine, too soft, I can see myself becoming stronger, better, and more confident. It feels good.
Thought y’all might enjoy how I got my ass handed to me on a platter tonight. I was just filming video tonight, only training a tiny bit, but when they started sparring, I had to get me some. Y’all say its important to see yourself on film, so I wanted to.
We were almost out of time so I asked coach to film & asked Zach to do one round, hands & feet. Zach is huge & muscle-y, he outweighs me by 80-100 pounds and is a highly accomplished MMA fighter, while I am, um, not. He also has the best control in the room, so while I expected him to destroy me, I knew he’d never injure me - I trust him. He didn’t disappoint:
That was over an hour ago & my left thigh is still tingly from one of his kicks that almost dropped me. I was shocked by how stiff I looked on film! Yuck!
Worst comment by coach: “You’re supposed to lead with your jab! Instead you lead with your face and that’s why you get hit so much!”
Best comment by Zach: “That was really fucking good, Parker! I was pounding you and you just kept coming back for more, I couldn’t believe it!”
So, there you go. He wasn’t hitting me hard by his standards, of course, but I still felt like he’d dragged me to the laundromat & thrown me in the dryer with a bunch of rocks.
So, how about you guys, how’s your training going?
hey guys n girls , was told to post here regarding strength and lifting .
Im just curious what folks on here do in regards to their resistance training.
Prior to my muay thai fighting i trained for powerlifting, though now i feel im gravitating toward muay thai and wish to up my cardio, and cut my gym time down to may be 2 days per week.
So any one who can shed any light on programs or what they do, i would appreciate it .
You guys let this fall back to page 14 or something.
I got my ass kicked today. Repeatedly and often. The guys that can usually beat me ran a train on me. The guys that are usually my competition choked the shit out of me. And the guys that are usually my practice dummies were getting me in to funky positions and holding me down. Now I gotta get ready for competition class in two hours.
