Parker, be careful!
Hey Miss Parker,
here’s an exercise that will help repair your shoulder and give you something to do with your new spare time. The idea is to take a full 30-sec going down, then 30-sec getting back up.
You can use a dumbbell.
Reverse Turkish Get-Up.
Here’s an instructional video, you start by cleaning and pressing the bell:
Thanks, Downwardog! I’ll get on it today.
Ahem, excuse me dear, but if I am not mistaken, I believe I see a picture of you picking up a cow. That is pretty much the best thing I have ever seen. This is taking cow tipping to the next level & I am very impressed. If your first choice of career falls through, you could always be a stealth cattle rustler!
You’ve got to keep that shoulder absolutely in the socket and otherwise in place, throughout the exercise, Miss Parker! Maintain the lockout.
That little calf was the BEST. Just born the night before. I’m makin’ like Milo of Croton!

I will, Dan. You know, my teacher told me yesterday that I was the 3rd person that day to tell him they’d had physical therapy on their shoulder that day. He’s a personal trainer, too, so I asked him if they were all kravers & he admitted they were.
That tells me its time to get very aggressive about learning to protect myself against injury. I think that’s what they call pre-hab? Its my new quest.
Refraining from training sucked, and at my age, I need to take this issue seriously.
Anyone who can offer advice, I’ll gladly be your slave if you can help keep me injury-free!
Downwardog should get an award. Her photos are one-of-a-kind, that’s for sure.
Love ya, D-Dog!
Just mostly helped out the new students today in level one.
In the beginning of level 2/3, worked jabs on the heavy bag (right arm is still bound tightly to my body), till a teacher took pity on me for not being able to work the exercise everyone else was doing & offered to do a modified version with me. I closed my eyes & protected my head with my left arm while he kicked me & smacked me with the focus mitts, then when I heard him smack the mitts together I attacked whichever one he was holding up with 10 jabs. My cross is strong, but my jabs bite it.
He told me I was too tense from “trying to punch hard” & to loosen up. He said, “You’re thinking too much. You know that little place I told you to go to? Go there while I’m smacking you & come out swinging.” So, it was better after that, but I still have a way to go. I can stay loose when I’m able to use all my limbs, but not just for jabs! Grrrr! My tension reveals my insecurity with this strike. I thought of some advice Renton had given me, which also helped, but its just going to take practice, I guess. I do love me some Renton. We also worked redirecting vertical kicks with the lead arm.
I am informed that its time to toughen up my shins. You’re gonna hear me whimpering & squealing from all the way over there.

Deej! I’m so glad I stopped in here this morning, what a nice way to start the day!
I’ve got BJJ class in 90-min. Still sore from yesterday. I vow to stay relaxed.
Miss Parker, have you tried the Turkish Get-Ups? I swear to you, they’re just what the Dr. ordered for your shoulder rehab.
Did you guys read Thibs’ article on metabolic training? I’ve been doing it for 6-7 weeks and it’s crazy. fantastic for fighting.
Yes, ma’am, the Turkish getups are awesome. I’m doing them every day. Thanks for that!
Tonight was first night training without being tied up. Light training on the right arm.
1st hour: private w/ Gorgeous Bastard, still working on developing power in kicks & punches (jab only for me for now). Will continue to work on this for the forseeable future, until I can smack him in his gorgeous face & really knock him back. He’s 6’4" & weighs 240 & I’m 5’7" & 130, so let’s face it, could be a while. A long while.
2nd hour: level one classes have gotten huge, I went in to train but ended up helping out instead.
3rd hour: level 2/3. Knife defenses. Gorgeous Bastard again, which I love, because he’s all about completely fucking anhialating your attacker. This is good for timid females to be exposed to, though there aren’t any timid ones in this class. His lessons are one of the reasons we aren’t timid any more. Yay!
FightingIrish, if you’re reading this, my angel, you’ll be happy to hear the number one best knife defense is RUN. That part of the lesson was pretty short, though, so we had to do other defenses, too. ![]()
Now I’m gobbling anti-inflammatories, icing my shoulder, & sighing happily.

Haha, yes, I’m reading Parker.
Glad to hear them tell you that and not that some fancy move will miraculously help you steal it away without getting sliced.[/quote]
Are people still teaching those kinds of stupid techniques? I haven’t been involved in the MA community in a little while, but I thought that everyone was telling people that the #1 knife defense is run. That is what I learned and what I taught. Those techniques are only used as an ABSOLUTE last resort.
Ooh, my computer is at the shop getting fixed. It caught the Trojan Horse virus. Fuckers. I’m sneaking in on my husband’s work computer & only have a minute so I’ll just say thanks, FI, you’re the best. I’ll use your advice & let you know how it goes. Don’t know if we’ll have class on saturday because we might have a hurricane instead.
See y’all when my computer is home safe & sound.
Miss Parker, hope you get your computer problems worked out!
Got invited by a marine to a new MMA facility, “The Compound,” that’s opening up in my town. Asked me to be a sparring partner for their pro who’s got a fight coming up.
I’m looking forward to it, but have a bit of worry, 'cuz, for all my working out, training, and focusing on the karate lifestyle, I’m basically a gimp. I CAN’T wrestle, as any takedown with me landing on my back = a week’s worth of chiropractic, double-dosed Flameout, and prayers of hate. Hell, even BJJ kills my back, but not for as long.
Still, I’m going to check it out at the very least. I mean, how often do you get to workout with people teaching the (I presume abbreviated) MCMAP program, as well as someone on the professional road of mixed martial arts? At the very least, it’ll be another stepping stone on my way to 3rd Dan.
I’ll definitely post my impressions of the place.

woohoo! I’m spending the weekend at Frank Shamrock’s gym in San Jose CA
Hi Miss Parker! Hi DJ!
This place is fun!
Looks like my judo training will be put on hold for the next two weeks since IKE shutdown the city.
Haney1, drive up to Austin & train with us! ![]()
Except I won’t be here, as I’m going to San Diego to console myself for having my computer still in Dallas - I’m in the public library right now. Haney, I hope your house came out all right in the storm. My parents are still without power.
If I’ve ever annoyed any of you, you’ll be pleased to know that I had my lip split open last night in sparring. Kelli hits hard! Good times.
Hope to talk to y’all in a few days!
Parker,
I love San Diego! My wife and I took our honeymoon there and really enjoyed it. We actually stayed in Oceanside, right off the ocean (get that, huh?) and drove down to SD every day; it was only about 25-30 min.
Double-D,
Have fun at Frank’s. I’ve always respected Frank b/c he was one of the first guys, along with Ken and Tito, to “get it” in terms of being able to talk fans into watching his fights.
On another note, all my tests came back OK, so I’ve got the OK to get back into training. I’m going to meet up with my buddies that run the Kenpo studio next week and see if we can’t find a couple of classes for me to attend each week.

Vash,
Definitely let us know how that goes. Don’t over-extend yourself and go and get injured, though.

For me, “over-extension” involves getting out of bed. I consider myself blessed on those days I walk unaided.
