Strength Workout

Won’t post specifics of the workout, but will say it’s a routine designed by Jason Ferruggia (it’s his e-book with MMA-specific routines). Lifting mostly in the 10-12 rep range right now. Workout was about 35 min.

Gojuryu tonight. Tanshiki drills, five point kicking drill, then some bag work.

My form on kicks is terrible. Let it be known that I hate them, and would much rather use my fists.[/quote]

I used to really hate kicks in muay Thai. I just couldn’t get that hip rotation for some reason. Once I was able to get the rotation down, I started to develop more power. Now I enjoy kicks, although I hate when we do alternating rounds in class b/c if I take a few rounds off, my hips immediately tighten up and it takes me almost a full round to get them warmed up again.

You’ve gotta love B.J. Penn (credit mmaweekly.com)

Keeping up with his new attitude of training and work ethic, B.J. Penn didn??t take much time to get back in the gym and start preparing for his first title defense as lightweight champion against Sean Sherk and the Hawaiian legend still has much to say about the former titleholder who he faces in May.

Showing a dominant and aggressive style throughout his win over Joe Stevenson in January, Penn is already involved in a full training camp to prepare for the fight with Sherk, which is still more than three months away.

??I took a week off, and then I came back and I trained for a week, and then I trained half of last week, and now I??m back in the gym and I??m just training full speed,?? said Penn in an exclusive interview with MMAWeekly Radio. ??I??m going to go in there and show this man of cardio what cardio really is.??

His fire and energy have sparked a war of words with the former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion that seems to have turned this battle personal, but Penn insists it??s just business to him.

??For me, honestly, it??s not personal at all,?? he stated. ??The man was cheating. I called him a cheater; then he got all personal. So I think all the personal stuff is on him. He said this is the first time a fight??s personal and this and that and whatever. I couldn??t care less. I??m just going to go kick his ass.??

Penn has stayed strong on his statements about Sherk??s suspension following his fight with Hermes Franca in July 2007, and still doesn??t back down with the upcoming bout.

??How can you sit around saying you??re the champ, say the other guy??s the fake champ, and you got busted for (steroids)? We knew he was doing ??roids the whole time, and all this stuff, and about it??s nothing personal, he went and made it all personal. I was calling a spade, a spade.??

It is Sherk??s conviction by the California State Athletic Commission for a positive test following last year??s fight that has spurned the new champion to speak out about any steroid user in mixed martial arts.

??Everybody has questioned my heart, questioned my training ethics, this and that, but I never did something as cowardly as to take any sports enhancement drug,?? Penn said. ??That??s one thing no one can ever say about me, you know? That I was a coward and took sports enhancement drugs, because I was afraid I was going to get my ass kicked in front of millions of people. So anybody out there who said I never had no heart, at least I wasn??t a coward.??

Penn states that he??s never been tempted by the world of performance enhancing drugs, and believes it??s the type of person in the sport of MMA that has transitioned to the philosophy of cheating and taking the short cut to success by taking drugs.

??To me in this sport, it??s fighting, it??s mixed martial arts, and I feel there??s too many athletes and not enough fighters,?? commented Penn. ??I think these people going in taking these sports enhancement drugs, they??re not real fighters, they??re athletes. I??m a fighter. I??m a real fighter. That??s all I did my whole life.

??I??m not going to say, ??Oh, Sean Sherk is doing something illegal!?? I could care less about that. The guy was cheating, trying to steal somebody else??s dream, and that??s where it??s just a joke.??

The part that steroids have played in MMA has been seen by the multitude of suspensions handed down over the years, and Penn is specifically concerned about the other problems that may be happening beyond just taking the performance enhancement drugs.

??It does play a huge factor because they??re cheating and they??re getting more training time, and they??re stronger, but I don??t think that they??re just using steroids is the thing,?? he said. ??They??re probably pulling their blood out of a refrigerator right before the fight, blood doping, doing all these other things.??

Regardless of Penn??s take on steroids or Sherk, he still recognizes his opponent as a tough challenge and one he??s looking very forward to.

??Sean??s a great fighter. He??s done a lot of great things in the past. I??ll never dispute that, and it will be a great win, whether he??s on steroids or not. It??s a great win to beat Sean Sherk. It??s going to be sweet beating Sean Sherk on May 24.??

Strength Workout

Time: 35 min.
Notes: Worked a lot of single-joint exercises today in the 8-10 rep range.

Supposed to go to BJJ tomorrow morning, but apparently we’re due for a winter storm out here, so we’ll see if there will actually be a class or not.

One thing you can never say about BJ is that he’s afraid to fight anyone…he’s pretty frickin nuts and, like Nick Diaz who is very similar in this regard, he would fight anyone-and I mean anyone, from Wanderlei to Crocop I’m pretty sure BJ would sign up for any of those.

Very true. BJ has shown a willingness to fight anyone. He took on Machida, a guy most guys his own size aren’t too keen on fighting.

I love BJ’s interviews because he’s brutally honest. He’ll tell it like it is. Plus, he’s got some great one-liners. His line about cardio was hilarious.

Nick Diaz is definitely a crazy bastard. Diaz-Penn…now that would be a fight I’d pay to see.

No BJJ today. Crap.

It’s V-D, go get some pussy…all the single girls will be feeling lonely and giving it up easy

Strength Workout

Time: 30 min.
Notes: More single-limb exercises, this time in the 6-8 rep range. Did some stretching afterwards.

Been dealing with some acid reflux issues, which has hampered my focus and intensity a bit in the gym.

bjpenn is also pissed because dana white won’t let him fight in other weight classes till he beats all the good lightweights.(penn wants to be champion of every weight class and has fought at every weightclass in pride or other)

i lift 3x a week on starting strenght
box 3-4x a week at a gym and even more at home
BJJ 2-3x a week at a gym and roll wit my bro often
wrestling was 6x a week and will end next friday then i will go about 3-4x a week and roll wit my bro.
i do cadio 4-5x a week. i do high rep ab work 3x a week. then i do medium rep liek 15 for upper abs monday, obliques weds, and lower friday. i am 6 ft 1 and about 158

Endurance Workout

A. Walking Lunges, 10 reps
B. MB Mountain Climbers, 10 reps
C. MB Push-ups, 10 reps
D. Prisoner Squats, 20 reps
E. Inverted Rows, 15 reps
F. MB Sit-ups, 15 reps
G. Jumping Jacks, 50 reps

No rest between exercises. Rest 1 min. between sets. Repeat 3 times for total of 4 sets.

Did this workout at home b/c I wasn’t in the mood to brush my car off - again - after doing it all weekend while having to drive across town to cover 3 different wrestling regional tournaments.

Pretty good workout, though. Stomach feeling a bit better, which is good.

Haven’t been here a while figured id add some feed back.

Tu- DE: Lower Body (am), Muay Thai (pm)
We- Conditioning (am), Muay Thai
Th- ME: Upperbody(am), Long distance cardio, Muay Thai
Fr- Jiujitsu (AM), Jiujitsu (PM)

My conditioning is at the best its ever been and MT training consist of a lot of conditioning work as is, so often times i dont need to do more than that conditioning twice a week. If i feel like I need to push myself harder, I scrap the tues/thurs regular lifting sessions and just lift saturday and sunday and do more conditioning midweek.

I’ve fought MMA, but currently Im just fighting amatuer thaiboxing till i feel im extremely dangerous on my feet. I should be turning pro by 2009 if things keep up at the same pace.

I’m going to start doing a LOT more jiujitsu tourneys when I get my living/$$$ situation worked out and steady.

I do some gi work in the morning and nogi in the evening on fridays. If all goes well, ill be training at 10th planet jiujitsu i have a lot of friends there and i have full confidence in my wrestling going well with eddie bravo’s system.

I changed up the conjugate system to fit my needs and utilize complexes at times to increase my conditioning and strength simultaneously just because it can be a time saver.

to give an example of the kind of things i do

ME: Upper body

  • Overhead Press, Incline Press, Chinup (ME)
  • Rowing
  • Unilateral press
  • Dips/pullups edt, muscle clean press, complex

ME: Lower Body

  • Deadlift (variations), Front Squat (variations)… ME
  • Snatch Pull, Clean pull, RDL, GM, OHS, Dumbbell swings
  • Unilateral leg stuff (maybe)
  • abwork (dragon flags, hanging pikes, weighted situps)

DE: Upper Body

  • DE, 1 arm snatch, 1 arm jerk, speed bench, clapping pullups
  • Rowing
  • dips/pullups edt, muscle clean & press, complex
  • shrugs/curls superset

DE: Lower Body

  • Box squat, jump squat, kneeling squat, power olift var, snatch pull, clean pull
  • Snatch Pull, Clean pull, RDL, GM, OHS, dbell swings
  • abwork (dragon flags, weighted situps, hanging pikes, zercher variations)

conditioning consists of things like

  • sprints mixed with weighted lifts, or calisthenics
  • various forms of interval training
  • rowing, elliptical, swimming for long distance cardio, wear a heart rate monitor and keep my heart rate above 180bpm for 30min…going to extend to an hour.
  • bagwork, padwork, various drills
  • odd implement training

mostly everything is catered to being able to put a SICK amount of intensity into whatever length of the round ill be fighting for. If its a 2minute amateur thaiboxing round i want to put the fury of 10,000 suns into that 120seconds and be able to do it again after a minute rest.

I also do at least 10-15min of yoga type stretching a day, and once a month do a yoga session in westwood mostly just to oggle some hot girls. I can be honest thats all its about. but it has helped a lot because with all the training i was having some serious problems with my hip flexors getting tight but no longer!

diet is basically a lot of raw food, protien shakes and meat on the weekends when i have time to cook. Raw food and protien shakes are just because its easy as fuck to prepare and takes only a few minutes to make a meal. I have a vitamix blender, makes life super easy. Longest thing is making my own salad dressing but i usually make enough to last me a month or two so its not really a problem either. Other than that I eat pretty much whatever I want. I stick to MLB tho, meats leaves and berries. I rarely eat any rice and pasta type stuff.

Hey Xen. You still at Chutebox USA?

Nope, they’re defunct its now LA MMA, and i believe its one of the Machado brothers who owns it. Whole lot of drama went down. But there are some good guys who started there but moved on to progress elsewhere who are up and coming.

nick quintong, anthony johnson, gator, myself, etc

aj’s already in the ufc (kinda), nick just fought on a TFA card, and im rounding the amateur circuits. K-1 is my primary goal, then mma.

Nicks hands are ridiculous lately, i think he should actually take a stab at just straight up boxing.

My fave diaz quote…

The UFC doesn??t want me fighting them but I??ll be there even when they start falling off because I??m a long distance fighter not like these fragile guys who always get hurt in training. How the hell do you get hurt so much in training? Stop flipping tires and jacking up all these weights.

lol, gotta love that guy… he smokes a stupid volume of weed, and still wins triathalons. crazy shit lol

Anybody have any places they really liked for BJJ or Muay Thai in or around Sacramento, CA? I’m looking for each and have found a couple, but recommendations would be awesome.

I’m looking for something fairly competitive, and I’ve heard Brudda’s BJJ is a little more laid back.

http://www.sacbjjacademy.com

  • David Terry is a Black Belt under Rickson Gracie, that should be enough but i really dont know much about the classes, highly unlikely he teaches the classes himself.

http://www.cassiowerneck.com/

  • buddy of mine used to train here, he loved it. Instructor is straight badass too especially if you’d like to compete. He’s pretty damn active himself which is always good.

FightinIrish…

I worked up to everything very slowly. Stopped lifting for a while, just trained muay thai, added in sled drags and gpp work sparingly, added in some running. got fairly accustomed to training twice a day. started adding some lifting in. Kept it simple, squats + pullups edt style 15min get in and out of the gym… that eventually led to being able to do more complicated stuff as far as lifting. Its not hard when you take a long time to work into it… but christ if it isn’t a lot of wear and tear. Plus the moment i dont get a lot of sleep (like tonight unfortunately) or dont eat enough then bam im thrown off the entire week almost.

Xen,
Good to see you back around, brother.
