MMA Training Hub

Depends on who I’m up against. Most of the guys I train with are much more comfortable on the ground and have a weak stand up game. Very poor use of angles in both advancing and retreating. Most have a decent jab, cross combo but weak hooks, lousy with body shots and no clinch skills. So with these guys I like to stay standing.

I disagree with TKD being useless. Like any art it is what you make of it. We got a muy thai guy that I pick apart using lead leg side and hook kicks. Not that TKD > Muy Thai just simply this guy telegraphs his kicks making him easy to counter, evade or block.

Strength Workout

  1. Squat, 5x5
    2A. Incline Bench Press, 3x5
    2B. Chin-ups, 3xamap
    3A. Hammer Curls, 2x12
    3B. Close-grip push-ups, 2x12
  2. Standing calf raises, 3x12

Time: 40 min.
Notes: Just kind of threw this workout together when I got to the gym. Still working on my actual routine, so probably just going to “wing it” this week in the gym. Did stretching afterwards.

As for the question about where you prefer to fight, for me it depends on who I’m going against. Granted, I don’t have a lot of MMA experience, but if I am going against someone that looks uncomfortable on their feet, I’ll keep it standing if I can. I have long limbs, so I try and utilize those by throwing my jab and leg kicks to keep distance, then throwing combos when I see an opening. If I’m going against someone who is real smooth on their feet, then I’ll try and close the distance and get them to the ground.

Of course, that’s my gameplan. It doesn’t always work out like that; sometimes my opponent dictates where the fight winds up. That’s not a lot of fun…

Just a heads up, Martin Rooney’s master work on MMA strength and conditioning comes out in three weeks. For those who aren’t familiar with him, it is probably safe to say that Martin has more S&C experience with top notch MMA fighters than anyone else in the business out at Parisi Speed School. It was cool seeing him back in Almeida’s corner this weekend at UFC 81.

Sweet…do you know where we can pick up a copy (I assume this is a book) when it comes out? Thanks for the tip, Donut. Rooney is definitely well-respected in the MMA community.

It’s going to be a book, and should be in stores everywhere and online in 27 days he told me. Definetely should be worthwhile, Martin indeed carries a lot of cred. He mentioned that Kenny Florian and Nog both accosted him wanting to get copies of it ASAP.

Nice. I know what some of my birthday (2 weeks from today, shameless plug) money is going towards.

Anyone see Arturo Gatti on Pros vs Joes? That was a pretty funny episode.

I’m most comfortable on the ground, and I’ll generally only go down if I can get on top (if we’re sparring, rolling I’m content to play guard and whatnot)…I don’t fight though, so I couldn’t really say what position I would use. Best case scenario though and I’m shooting for side control.

As for cups I really reccommend Shock Doctor’s Compression Shorts with Built-In Flex Cup. Its all I wear these days. Can’t say much about them. They’re compression shorts with a cup built in. Comfortable to wear. The cup stays in place. They have saved my balls many a time. Available at ringside.com

Thanks, I bought one of these and it is great

Did some shadowboxing (5 rounds) and some bodyweight exercises.

Workouts have been pretty shitty this week. Part of it is work is crazy busy, but a part of it has to do with motivation…

Which leads me to the question(s) of the day.

Have you guys ever gone through bouts where your motivation to train (not so much lift, but actual martial arts) was lacking? What did you do to get through it?

I have had this problem a couple times when i didn’t have a specific idea of when i was going to fight and i felt like i was going through the motions. This on top of going to a party college it basically came down to being like nike and just do it. I’m good friends with some of the people i train with so that makes it easier also when you are training everyday it just becomes a habit.

Endurance Workout
A. Walking Lunges, 10 reps each leg
B. MB Mountain Climbers, 10 reps
C. MB Push-ups, 10 reps
D. Prisoner Squats, 20 reps
E. Mixed-grip Pull-ups, 6-8 reps
F. Hanging Leg Raises, 5 reps
G. Rope Skipping, 50 reps

No rest between exercises, 60 sec. rest between sets; repeat 2 times for total of 3 sets.

Time: 25 min.
Notes: Did a 5-min. jog to warm-up, then did some dynamic stretches before jumping into the workout. Had good energy and kept a pretty fast pace the entire time. Did 3 sets of Hammer Curls and 3 sets of cable pressdown afterwards just for giggles.

EG: What you said about just going through the motions really stuck with me. I think b/c I’m not sure of when I’m going to compete again, I feel like I’m just training for the sake of training. So, while I may not know when my next tournament is, I can still push myself by trying to earn stripes faster in class and also scoring more submissions over people in class.

Listen, I was going to PM this to you, but I figure everyone here might get a benefit from it.

I just got A Fighter’s Heart by Sam Sheridan. Now, I started it today, but I’m a voracious reader and it only takes me a page and half to tell whether something is good or not… and this is good. Very good.

You want inspiration? Go pick it up.[/quote]

I have that book. Great read. Read it last year and that really helped push me towards doing my first BJJ tournament.

Perhaps I’ll give it another read. Thanks for the suggestion.

I liked the first half of that book but the second bored the heck out of me.

+1. It went downhill towards the middle.

That’s a fair assessment. I didn’t read the dogfighting chapter and skimmed over the Hollywood part. Oh, and the meditation stuff wasn’t that great.

I was surprised at how little the author actually fought. I figured the book would deal more with his actual fighting. But, he seemed to get injured an awful lot, often right before he was to compete.

Still like you said, the first half was really good.

Been there done that.

  1. I seclude myself and play Xbox and drink copious amounts of beer 14 hours a day until I realize I can’t live life sitting in the dark drunk.

  2. Read Alwyn Cosgrove’s blog. This makes me feel bad about sitting in the dark drunk.

  3. Have you watched Ross Enamait’s DVD or read his blog? Talk about a machine. This makes me get up and do something other than sitting in the dark drunk.

  4. Cute girls don’t hang out with guys sitting in the dark drunk.

On a side note:

I found a new website.

http://www.boxingperformance.com/

About the Site:

Not free :frowning:

$1 for a 21 day trial

Takes PayPal

Lots of Articles from beginner to Advanced

Some of the Articles seem broken. Pictures don’t show up. :frowning:
(might just be the crappy company computer)

Lots of video demonstrations. 1 Video = 1000 Pictures

Site seems pretty new and not 100% of the bugs have been flushed out. :frowning:
Example, wanted to watch a video demo of a 5-punch combo but kept getting an interview with Mike Boyle. Not bad, just not what I wanted.

Anyways. Check it out and see what you think.

muay Thai

Time: 90 min.
Notes: Worked a lot of kicks today. Did a lot of kick checks as well…shins are sore as hell after that. Good workout, though.

So, I’ve decided to go back to a 3-day/week lifting cycle. Going to use this downtime to try and put on some size. I’ll get my conditioning from classes; or will do at least 1 day of conditioning if I can’t make it to class.

If a tournament comes up that I want to do, I’ll make the proper changes to my schedule, but for now, I’m looking at:

M,W,F: Lift
T,Th: BJJ
Sat: muay Thai/BJJ/conditioning (depends on what my work schedule’s like that week)
Sun: off

Also have set a goal of earning my next stripe on my belt by this time next month.
