RA Dickey: 2-5 5.36 ERA 8 HRs allowed 42 IP
Barry Zito: 3-1 3.06 ERA 2 HRs allowed 32 IP
130 games left to play.
That sounds all well and good, and for an offensive player there is obviously still plenty of time to turn things around, but Dickey’s had 7 starts out of appoximately 30-32 starts over the course of a year. That’s a sizable chunk of the season at around 20+%.
And?

The bet is against Barry Zito who has been terrible the last 5 years versus a pitcher who has been good 3 years straight including a Cy Young.

Take a glance at the teams Dickey has faced this month (Jays schedule is tough at the beginning and easy in the 2nd half) and comapare it to Zito.

Once SF’s schedule toughens up, I bet Zito will return to his old usual self.
The Giants’ schedule doesn’t really “toughen up” since they play in a weaker offensive division than the Blue Jays. That’s why I made the bet with you in the first place. The odds are stacked in my favor, not yours. Over the course of their careers, Dickey is the worse pitcher, over the last 15 starts or so that each pitcher has made, Dickey is the worse pitcher and so far this year, Dickey is the worse pitcher.

I knew about the advantage of divisions, I still don’t think you’ll win.

I also don’t care about the “course of their careers”

Dickey has been a much better pitcher since he’s become a knuckleballer which is all that’s relevant.

Zito’s time in Oakland is in no way representative of his stuff now.

The Giants still play half their games against non division rivals.

He’ll eventually have to pitch against some combination of ATL, WAS, CIN, NYY, BOS,

Melky hit his 1st home run in 9months. The team gave him the silent treatment…

I think it’s a good sign that there isn’t such a sombre mood in the dugout, I see it as a sign they still expect to be great this year.

Nope. Not sure why I’d have to, his ERA is over 5 and you’ve already posted the lines in each of his starts. Besides, I’ve got faith that Zito has actually made a comeback. He doesn’t have Cy stuff anymore, but he’s a good pitcher again. And it’s MIRACULOUS!

I’ve accepted that he was done since last year and wasn’t even hopeful when he had those 3 good starts this year. I’ve already accepted it. Not sure what this has to do with Zito or Dickey. If the Phils were smart they’d trade Utley while he still has renewed value and refresh the farm system.

Besides, I’ve seen a WS win in the last 5 years, you’re still living off Joe Carter’s walkoff in 1993.

All that is relevant is how good the two are right now, and right now Dickey is more than two runs per game worse than Zito.

Also, right now, Dickey plays in a park that is much easier to score runs in than the one Zito plays in. The other parks in Dickey’s division are bandboxes, other than Tampa’s. So Dickey’s divisional road games are played almost exclusively against good-hitting teams in tiny ballparks, whereas Zito plays half his divisional road games in Dodger Stadium and Petco Park, two of the best pitcher’s parks in the bigs. He’s given up exactly one run at home all year, over four starts. Dickey gives up that many runs at home every other inning.

Funny, because I remember you arguing that this was the beginning of a SLOW demise, not a rapid one. I also remember acknowledging that if he was injured I WOULD be worried about some sort of demise, but you simply attributed it to too many innings. Looks like you were wrong on both counts because he has declined quite rapidly and he is also injured.

He wasn’t even old enough to remember that season! He’s still living off the Jays’ 88-win season back in 1998! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

The only thing miraculous around here is if the Jays actually pull their heads out of their asses and finish the season at .500.

Can you point to these comments that you’re referring to?

What I recall saying was he would no longer be his ace type self and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was somewhere between mediocre to slightly above average for the remainder of his career. I wasn’t arguing this, I was merely making a loose prediction.

Do you understand the difference between making a prediction and making an argument? You should really get that confusion sorted out before you start teaching Koreans English.

I just think you flew off the handle without recognizing that Zito has improved. Your original statement indicated my comment was absurd because he was only 2 starts into this season, as if the 2nd half of last season didn’t happen.

Then I watched as you defended your statement to the death, instead of just recognizing that you may have been mistaken.

Like I said, I really have no vested interest in either pitcher, but if we’re here to talk baseball what good does it do to fly off the handle and not just admit that you may have been mistaken?

Lanky: that’s actually the typical tone of this thread.

Emotional arguing accompanied with put downs is basically how things go here. We basically say stuff to get a rise out of each other.

Ill try and tone it down when I converse with you but this is how it’s been between DB and I since 2010

According to an article I read this morning, going back 10 years, the highest that a team finished that was last in the AL East after 32 games was third. And that was the '07 Jays.

Even Dan Plesac is about to jump off the bandwagon. It’s not looking good for the Jays at all.

Yeah I’ve already said this start is troubling. The argument we’re having is over Dickey.

Secondly I don’t consider the last 10 years to reflect anything going on in the AL East today.

The Yankees and Red Sox were absolutely stacked during that period. Each of them were fielding all star calibre lineups.

Talent level this year is only a fraction of what it once was

Oh, I didn’t know that I couldn’t talk about other, related aspects of baseball. I mean, this is the baseball thread and all.

And I find it very interesting that a total numbers guy like you wants to discard what the numbers say when they show that it doesn’t look good for your team.
