RA DIckey has zero rings and Zito has TWO! Dickey has never even pitched in the postseason and Zito has pitched in SIX with a 2.83 ERA.
DBCooper wrote:
Actually, never mind on that bet. I don’t want to have to root any harder for Zito than is necessary.
Lol

Of course not. Because by seasons end dickey will be great and Zito will have his usual mid 4 ERA.

The only person he is capsble out pitching will be Tim Lincecum.
Dickey will end up with an ERA of about 4, which would be average for him. I guarantee you Zito has a better year than Dickey. You don’t know anything about pitching since you’ve never done it, so you’re hardly qualified to make any sort of assessment on the matter. But laugh away about his slow fastball all you want. He hasn’t given up a run in several starts, whereas Dickey’s been getting hammered. Small sample size? Sure, but I know a pitcher who knows how to pitch when I see one. You do not.
DBCooper wrote:

Now you’re making his point for him. Of course I watched the last four years prior to last year. They were horrendous beyond belief. That’s why what he’s done the last year is a “miraculous comeback”.
He threw 16 innings last postseason and 14 thus far. Plus what? Another good 12-14 at the tail end of last regular season?

That to you is a a miraculous comeback?
DBCooper wrote:
He’s come back, he’s pitched well in the postseason and won a World Series ring (not counting 2010 since he wasn’t even on the playoff roster) and given how bad he was, it is nothing short of a miracle.
You have to debase the definition of a miracle in order to fit your argument. Excellent work.
DBCooper wrote:
What would constitute a large enough sample size for you?
1 year.
DBCooper wrote:
The fact is that RA Dickey has exactly ONE stellar year under his belt at the tender young age of 37 and you were ready to anoint him the ace of the staff on what you thought would be the best team in the AL this year.
I’ve already debunked this. 3 good years in a row and 1 of those was outstanding. He’s gotten better every year. I’d happily take Dickey duplicating his 2011 year.
DBCooper wrote:
Quite a bold prediction based on a very small sample size.
This coming from a guy who is expecting Zito to be good this year.
DBCooper wrote:
But at least argue from an intellectually consistent, honest standpoint.
Right, and referring to 40-45 good stretch as a miraculous comeback isn’t intellectually honest.

And how is that relevant in their comparison of talent levels?

You are showing that you’re incapable of forming a cogent argument.

Then why don’t you bet on it? By the end of the Regular season, the reigning NL Cy Young winner will have a higher ERA than Barry Zito assuming a minimum of 175IP.

What does the fastball velocity have to do with anything? Greg Maddux couldn’t throw his way out of a wet paper bag and he was the best pitcher of his generation.

I wasn’t trying to be logical, I was trying to be inflammatory.

Okay - for this bet and any going forward. The Giants/Jays series has already been decided on.

How is fastball velocity all that relevant? Talent is one thing, but players play for results, so whatever gets the better results is the better talent. And the fact is that Zito has better results throughout his career than Dickey does. He has a lower career ERA, he’s thrown way more innings, he’s won more games, he’s pitched in the postseason, where his ERA is an outstanding 2.83. He was a major catalyst for the Giants during their run to the Title last year. He also has the same amount of Cy Young awards that Dickey has.

So why is velocity relevant here? Why is their talent level even relevant here? The fact is that Zito was and still is a more talented pitcher than Dickey. Dickey doesn’t throw any harder than Zito does. And the results speak for themselves, which as of late have been in Zito’s favor, especially when you consider that while Dickey was at home seeing therapists about all the times he was raped by women as a child, Zito was on the mound hurling shutouts in elimination games in the postseason.

You’re on. One month.

Raj - Zito was so bad, for so long, his past 10-12 starts are statistically impossible without him having made significant adjustment to make him an effective pitcher again. I’m not saying he’ll be winning any more Cy awards, but he’s a good pitcher again and it’s something I don’t think anyone saw coming.

Ubaldo Jimenez was elite for half a season+ and now has all but fallen off the table since then.

Zito could have made some changes that will lead to some improvement - maybe from shitbag to serviceable #5. That I can believe.

But that’s about where I’d cap it.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to pick a fight with Q. Guy looks a lot more built in real life than he does on T.V.
Punk move to go to the mound when it was an unintentional hit by pitch, and when the pitcher might be 160lbs soaking wet. Watch out, we have a badass on the padres.

I will point out that I wasn’t sold on Jose Bautista until the end of the 2010 season where he put up 54 HRs.

He began absolutely lighting it up from Sept '09,

Yeah, it was a blatant over-reaction. As a bunch of commentators pointed out, Q is one of the most HBP per AB hitters of all time because he never moves an inch out of the way.

He shouldn’t have charged the mound, but it didn’t help that Greinke said something to him when he stared him down. The dude does get hit a lot and I can’t recall him charging the mound before. He must have some former beef with Greinke. They did use to be in the same division, Royals and White Sox, so there must be some history. That is my only explanation.

Former beef? How about the previous two times Greinke drilled him in that game? Does getting hit twice in his last two at-bats count?

edit: Never mind. I misread something earlier. I thought that Greinke had hit him twice before in that game, but he’s hit him twice earlier in his career, not the game.

Maybe he should make an effort to get out of the way, not be the most hit player in the game. I doubt greinke said anything that offensive and it was probably more “WTF make an effort to move and wouldnt get hit all the time”

punk move all the way around by quentin. i have a feeling next time they play, Kemp will be playing very shallow in the center field…
