Detroits up 5.5 in the central heading into September. Whitesox are on their west coast swing. This shit is about to get interesting as a motherfucker.
NYY or Boston is going to get the wildcard so who cares, but this AL Central looks like a lot of fun.
The Diamondbacks acquired second baseman Aaron Hill and shortstop John McDonald from the Blue Jays for Kelly Johnson, tweets John Gambadoro Sports 620 KTAR. Notably, the Jays have called a press conference for 3:30pm central time.

What do you guys think of Kelly Johnson?
Strikes out a shitload and runs into one often enough to stay in the lineup. He can swipe some bags and he has above average power at his position but I’m not sure about his defense. He’s basically a .220 hitter who’s good for 170 k’s a year and about 15-20 homeruns/15-20 sb’s

What do you think of Aaron Hill and John McDonald? Do you think they’ll help Arizona?

From a defensive standpoint? Most definitely.
John McDonald is a major upgrade from a defensive standpoint, he is best up the middle but can play any infield position, in fact I think he use to catch at one point.
Aaron Hill is slightly better defensively than Kelly Johnson (from what I’ve read) and also slightly better offensively.
In the end the Diamondbacks lost nothing offensively and gained significantly defensively.
Edit: John McDonald is exactly the type of guy you want on your bench in the post season
The holy fuck wasn’t so much over acquiring Kelly Johnson, but trading the longest tenured Blue Jays on the team. They have both been in Toronto for 7 years.
Also Aaron Hill is only 2 seasons removed from a Silver Slugger season. He’s really not a big risk financially and there’s a possibility he could feel ‘refreshed’ in Arizona and the Dbacks catch lightening in a bottle.
Who knows, he could go on a tear in the last 6 weeks, he has shown the ability in the past.

Well, he’s definitely going to be playing in a good stadium for hitting.

Good luck with that man, they brought up a triple A guy to play third base so Roberts could play Second while Kelly sat on the bench because he couldn’t haggle. The guy is a joke, I hope he does better up there. I’m tired of his ass.

If Aaron Hill keeps playing like he is, he’s really not much better and could arguably be worse at the plate.
I think this deal is more about John McDonald than anything.

Well, from our (AZ) point of view it has to do with our manager. He told everyone, play or GTFO. Kelly Johnson decided to test that idea, gave him all kinds of breaks. Staff realized he didn’t want to play so they told him to GTFO. He’s a second baseman, he’s supposed to produce at the plate, he didn’t…so we’ll try someone else.
This will also affect the rest the team, they’ll play better…well except Upton he knows he’s safe but he insists on not catching the freaking ball.

And Kelly Johnson is only one season removed from a .284/.370/.496 season with 26 homers.
As Bad as Johnson’s been this year, he’s been a little better than Hill. slightly higher OBP, way higher slugging (.412 vs .313, 18hr vs 6hr). With the AL-NL transition they may even out.
From what I’ve read, basically TOR knew they weren’t re-signing Hill and were afraid of him accepting arbitration, so they decided to give Johnson a shot to see if they like him.

Even though the number don’t show it, I would put Hill and Johnson on the same level power wise. I doubt the Dbacks will lose much offensively with Hill, if not gain.

The question there is do you believe the Hill from 2005-2008 and 2011, or the Hill from 2009-2010… two very different players in terms of power.

Nice throw home Guzman, what an idiot.
That was an ugly game between the Giants and Padres. Lots of dumb mistakes.
It’s even uglier if you top on the fact that the Giants can’t beat the Padres. We’ve had the easiest stretch of games and still look horrific.
Example A: Cody Ross almost destroying Aubrey Huff’s knee going after that foul ball. That cost us the eventual first run in the game, and was simply a dumb play.
I think we need to get into a benches clearing brawl, and get some fire back in our bellies.

Yeah, Hill has always went between hitting for average and hitting for power except for 2009 which he did both.
He’s probably going to be a .250 15HR guy. He never walks which is a big problem for him.
