Mixing Powders

Anyone have any advice on getting protein/MRP powders to mix fully without using a blender? I have been taking MetRx MRP at work in the afternoons, so a blender is really out of the question. I mix them with water and shake them up in a squirt bottle for about 5 minutes, then drink from a glass. This has worked somewhat well, but I still have to swallow down chunks of powder. Is this a problem anyone else has? Suggestions?

Buy one of those shakers made to mix powders. Lots of internet sites sell them…they’re made of plastic and include a mesh-like insert that helps break up and mix the powder when you shake it up. Cheap, too…

I agree with boscobarbell, it’s the mesh. Some of the shakers have more of a wheel and hub and don’t do as good a job of mixing the powder. Definitely get the one with the mesh.

Also, my powder seems to mix better the colder the water is. If you have access to a refrigerator keep the drinking water there and mix with it. Also, I’ve found that a couple of cubes of ice help in the mixing process.

I second or third the shaker bottle. Don’t buy it online though because you’ll get charged $5 to ship a $3 shaker bottle. Go to your local GNC or Vitamin World-- they usually have at least one variety of shaker bottle.

Why not use a blender? There are small, battery-operated blenders available for just this sort of thing, and they’re not too expensive.

Besides, you can menace interns with it and make inappropriate comments about its other potential uses. Try that with a shaker bottle.

The easiest way is to switch to Grow!. It disolves unbeleivably. That and use a blender before you put it in a shake bottle.

my advice is to by a shaker bottle with a good screen and screw on lid.

Also, always have a spoon handy to help mix chunks and get lumps away from the edges of your shaker.

What’s wrong with those chewy chunks of powder? I intentionally removed the mesh insert from my shaker bottles so that I can endulge in those chewy little chunks of protein heaven!! And if you filter them out, you’re missing out on several grams of protein.

You can purchase a portable, mini battery-operated hand blender, the boat motor kind, which is relatively inexpensive, if you don’t enjoy those wonderfully delicious chunks. GNC has one for around $7.

Go to the store and grab one of those small thermal lunchboxes, they are pretty cheap. In the morning put everything in the blender (this way you can add P.B., fruit etc.). Pour it into the shaker bottle and put it in the lunchbox. Now you have a better shake and you can shake it before you drink it.

I don’t have a problem with clumps of protein when I use Low-Carb Grow! But When using other proteins I’ve had the same problem.

Try using a blender bottle. It is a typical shaker bottle, but instead of a mesh screen it has a springy ball that looks a lot like a stainless steel whisk.

It helps when I add natural peanut butter or fruit to my shakes. It also makes great omelettes. You can get them at blenderball for $8.95. I love it.

Wire whisk baby.

Generations of french chefs can’t be wrong.

Seriously, they work great.

this has been my experience so far:

  1. use more water
  2. use warmer water
  3. let the powder stand for some time (the chunks will become softer and you can mix them out
  4. try whey hydrolisate (sp?)
  5. get a small, yet powerful hand blender (the better the powder mixes, the nice it is, it becomes very frothy)
  6. make a whole bunch of shake in the morning and put it in bottles for usage throughout the day

good luck.

Use one of those Nalgene bottles available at sporting goods stores… you can shake the hell outta those due to the screw top and it usually takes just 5-10 seconds. I’ve never had any problems. But I know what you’re saying… there’s no way I’ve found to get around those damn chunks unless you use some type of shaker

I’m with greenbrian and shamrock on this; I use lukewarm water and fill up only half the amount of water in the Nalgene bottle; I shake furiously and THEN add some more cold water. (Instead of lugging battery operated shit at work or to the gym)

As for suitable containers, I find that sturdy 1L juice containers work well; as does your usual Rubbermaid thermos style container.

This clears everything up and I don’t get chunky… btw, what type of protein powder are you using ? The higher grade & $$$protein MRPs have a better grade of protein that dissolves way better.

Hey Everyone:
Thanks for all the responses - lots of good ideas. I ordered two of those mixing bottles on-line (one for home, one for work), the ones with the mesh screen. They came yesterday and I am looking forward to enjoying my first lump-free shake in a long time.

BTW, I will be giving GROW! a try once my damn MetRx runs out in a few days. I am sick of the Vanilla flavor anyway.
