WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign.

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,” Romney will say at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

“This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters… many of you right here in this room… have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President. If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, I feel I must now stand aside, for our party and for our country,” Romney said.

McCain prevailed in most of the Super Tuesday states, moving closer to the numbers needed to officially win the nomination.

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or (Barack) Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,” Romney planned to say in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Romney was never my guy, but he was a decent candidate and good for the party, I think. Also, I think given the nature of the GOP right now, this was a good move by him - and I am impressed by him for doing it.

As you noted in another thread, Boston - McCain and the GOP can begin the campaign now against the Democrats and can begin both solidifying the base and making an appeal to the middle.

Hillary!!

It should be obvious to everyone that Hillary is the ideal candidate for this country. Hillary will make sure that every American gets exactly what they deserve. She is like a Golden Statue of Lady Liberty, bring Justice at last to this country.

There is indeed on true conservative still in this race. If your state hasn’t yet had its primary, don’t miss out on your chance to vote for the real conservative.

As if I weren’t already angered enough by the pitiful candidates on either side, this whole primary process has just been shameful.

Entire states removed from the primary process on the Democratic side because they moved their dates forward without proper authorization.

And the long roll-out allowing many states no opportunity to choose among the (equally disappointing, unfortunately) potential Republican candidates.

This is a sideshow.

Anyone watch Ron Paul address CPAC?

Mitt goes to drop out.

McCain goes to save face knowing he has to suck up to conservatives, for now.

Ron Paul went and reminded everyone what Conservatives believe, and do. He took the party, and the frontrunner to task. Indeed, he hammered McCain big time, at CPAC of all places. He delivered on the foreign policy portion, too. Oh, and it was good seeing Bob Barr introduce him.

I think he decided as long as Huckabee stays in, he doesn’t have a chance. Huckabee has handed the nomination to McCain.
