I wasn’t sure where to post this. Anyways, I’m joining the Navy OCS program in a month. I was told by my recruiter that I had to lose 10 lbs. I’m not too worried about that being that I’m not over 20% bodyfat (which is one of the stipulations for being overweight) but probably close.
Ha Ha Anyways I was trying to target this article towards anyone who has been through the military (especially the boot camp stage) and what it was like to maintain a physique while going through boot camp.
I understand that I get 3 meals a day and I have to do alot of running. I don’t have to run as much as the Marines but it’s still alot. I know I’ll lose some weight and some muscle. I was curious if anyone has been through bootcamp while being on a bodybuilding training regimine and how they came through to bounce back and put on the lost size and muscle that a bodybuiler would probably endure through the tribulations of bootcamp.
It’s kind of a random topic but I was hoping someone may have a similar circumstance because I’m a little bummed about it. All insight is welcome as always.
You’re going to lose size and strength in bootcamp. You only get three meals a day and the food quality isn’t all that great. (The same thing applies when you are at sea, except at sea you can train) You will get plenty of exercise but you won’t be able to train the way you’re used to.
Depending on your conditioning level when you arrive you may even drop some conditioning, but remember, boot camp only last for a short time. If you’re already in good shape, after boot camp you simply go back to what you’re doing now and in no time you’ll be back to where you are now.
If you’re in good condition when you arrive, you’ll be miles ahead of the Micky D’s eating couch potatoes you’ll be in boot camp with. If you get stationed in Hawaii look me up.
Thanks for the information man. I’m trying to get a leg up on the competetion by upping my cardio by swimming and running. What branch of the military are you in?
Hiya, Handsome ~
You picked the name so that someone could say that, right?
Like BlueThunder said, you’ll get plenty of physical fitness training. I don’t personally think that you’ll lose a Lot of muscle, but some. Your idea of doing more cardio before you attend OCS is a great plan. I put a post in the War Room under “Future Marine,” you might want to look there. A lot of people posted good ideas about OCS and getting ready.
Way to go - hope it works out great for you. You’ll get your bulk back fast after OCS… you might even like the new look they give you! ;o)

Upping your cardio is a great plan. Put that together with your strength training and again you’ll be far ahead of those around you. The fact that you maintain a fitness life style says that you already possess the displine that many people lack. You most likely won’t have much of a problem. As Renee said you may like your new look. I was active duty Navy for 5 years.
