95x5x15 Sumo Deads
10-11-12-12-12 Burpees
20lb x5x15 DB Rows
15lb x5x15 Step-ups with a knee drive and press (took out the curl today)
Today was one of those loooong ass days. Every other year, my family ‘cans’ tomatoes; we order bushels (typically 10, this year we got 8), and then we cut 'em up, boil 'em, and put them into mason jars for easy access later when we want to make ragu Bolognese (meat sauce).
Well, we canned 4/8 bushels today (with me doing the farmer’s walk with each bushel to get it up into the kitchen), which meant standing for five hours cutting and boiling to can tomatoes, mashing them to make tomato paste, then making tomato bisque for lunch. Did I mention tomatoes?
But the good news is that I got that job I interview twice for. I start Sept 3, happy dance. But I have to can for at least another 5 hours tomorrow, my parents’ birthday present to me because I actually really do enjoy being up to my elbows in tomatoes.

CONGRATS, CONGRATS, CONGRATS on the job. We can compare and contrast and swap “new job” stories. And the tomato situation…well, the end result sounds lovely (i.e., the delicious food). PS – That is a lot of sumo deadlifting. I won’t lie, I am delighted when I hear about high volume deadlifting…

Baahaha whenever deadlifting is involved, I’m like a five year old. I get so excited; deadlift days are almost always a guaranteed good workout and a happy me.
The tomato situation… I still have two bowls of tomatoes sitting on the counter. I’ve been eating tomato soup for three days.
So after canning tomatoes again on Sunday and using it as my cheat day (I figured since it was my birthday, I can go with a fantastic cherry infused vodka drink and some froyo), I gave myself Monday to cleanse myself and get back on track. It didn’t help that I was basically incapacitated with a wicked migraine from 1:45 until I went to bed at 10pm. Today wasn’t much better, I’ve had nagging pain, dizziness, and a very short but very nasty ice-pick migraine while I was driving back from Tractor Supply today. Fought it off to work out just now, but it’s picking back up.
Earlier: 47 minute walk
Workout: 5 sprints uphill with sled + 15lbs – I noticed that when my driveway is wet, it becomes somewhat slippery with vibrams (herp derp, duh), but it changes the dynamic of the sprint. Instead of trying to get a good stride, I have to use short quick steps to not tank it face first.
Then circuit 5x
10lb DBsx2x15, 15lbsx3x15 Push-up then row
10-10-10-10-15 V-sits
15lb DBsx2x15, 20lbsx3x15 Clean and Jerk
6-6-6-6-7 Clap Push-ups
After my 2nd set through the circuit, I had a random thought along the lines of: “This feels easy, despite you sweating like a pig, maybe you should challenge yourself. I mean, after all, you haven’t been sore for quite a while.” And my response to this thought was: “what a wonderful, fantastic idea. Why don’t I switch my 10lb dumbbells for the renegade rows for these delightful 15lb dumbbells, and use 20lb dumbbells for the clean and jerks!”
And so I did. And did the last 3 sets with them.
I was cursing under my breath during sets 4 and 5.
Yesterday:
On non-lifting days, I usually do some NEPA on an exercise bike for 30+ minutes. I felt like doing something different, so I did: 6 minutes moderate effort, 2 minutes fast, 1 minute sprint, 1 minute fast, 1 minute sprint, then top of the order. Total for one time through was 11 minutes, and I did it 3x’s, with an added bonus of 1 minute jump-rope afterwards to make sure my ass was thoroughly kicked. I liked it so much, I might continue with similar routines.
Today:
6 hill sprints w/o sled (the last three felt great-- powerful and fast)
4-4-5-5-5 Wide grip pull-ups (I love being able to do pull-ups)
35x5x15 Cable Incline Press (these are still difficult, especially with upping the reps on the pull-ups_
Side note:
I saw a guy who was on the high school track team with me, which was about 5+ yrs ago; he was “jogging” around the local lakes in my town, but he looked like he was struggling. Now mind you, he was one of the best athletes we had on the team; and it made me so giddy and proud to know that I, a former thrower, am now in better shape than him. /ego boost
Monday:
Exercise bike 6 minutes fast, one minute sprint, 3 minutes moderate x3, jump rope for 2 mins
Today:
300x jump rope, plus a minute straight for good measure (it was getting dark, and my house is surrounded by woods, so I didn’t think it would be safe take my sled out)
11-11-11-11-11 Burpees
115lbsx5x15 Sumo deads (I can feel my calves twitching right now)
20lbs DBx5x15 Rows
15lbs DBx5x15 Step-up and press
Also started at my new big girl job today. It wasn’t awful but wasn’t amazing either. It’ll take more than a day for me to make an actual judgement.
Taking a combination of Wellbutrin and Zoloft for a couple months maybe 6 completely took away my migraines. I haven’t had one in 2 years. The migraines I used to get completely disabled me and it was a horrible lifestyle getting these things every week. It was destroying my life. I stopped getting migraines pretty much the first 2-4 weeks of taking these.
Like you I would also try to control them through diet and avoiding triggers. I used to be very sensitive to sunlight but not since taking the medication. I seriously suggest you try this. Yes there can be side effects which really frightened me but basically you have to just go for it and take the plunge. Anti depressants are an experimental treatment for migraines but I’d suggest you try the combination I did. I stopped taking them after a 4-6 months and I haven’t looked back since so you don’t have to take them forever.
Maybe they will make you feel different for a while that wasn’t the case for me but even if they do it’s short term and a small price to pay to end your migraines. A few months or half a year of medication for a complete turnaround. There is really no comparison to a migraine free life.

Thanks! I’ll look into it. My current MD prescribed me new medication but the pharmacy has yet to notify me. A migraine free life sounds like a dream right now, but it’s worth a shot. Cheers
They will probably want you to start one or the other at first. If that’s the case go with the Wellbutrin first. Wellbutrin is what I first started with and about a month after that I went back and requested they add Zoloft. At first the doctor didn’t think you could combine them but I insisted and she consulted with another doctor that had more experience with anti depressants then came back and gave me the OK.
Since I started with the Wellbutrin first it might have been the one that took away the migraines. Wellbutrin(Bupropion) works differently than most other anti depressants. But if it doesn’t work go back and add the Zoloft. Good luck!
I like your new picture/icon. It has been a forever long time. I think your new job has started so I hope you transition is smooth and things are going well.
LD – hmmmm, having worked in settings where we do pain management/headache treatment, I am not familiar with using a dopamine/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor like Wellbutrin for migriane tx. I think a common side effect of Wellbutrin can be headaches so I am surprised it is used as a preventative migraine tx. I think I would be very cautious in encouraging othes to try this type of tx. Generally, Wellbutrin is prescribed with an SSRI to reduce the negative impact SSRIs can have on things like sexual interest, etc.

ooo science! That’s a valid point for the drugs part of treating migraines. I’ve been attempting to just kill them with ice packs whenever I get one, but even that is difficult when I’m on the road or at work. Perhaps a bit more research on it won’t hurt, but I have heard from an MD that antidepressants can be helpful, and I was even prescribed a small dosage of seizure meds for them at one point.
As for work: it’s not awful. I’ve worked there for the past four winters as a temp, and I’m reminded almost everyday at work about how they desperately need more hands on deck to help, so I’m needed (which is good). Yet, I’m kind of useless until my computer comes in because most of the work that needs to be done can only be completed on a computer; so I spend most of time making calls to speed up orders/check their status.
Tomorrow, I start teaching karate again at the local Y. I teach all age groups now, which means about 2 and half hours tomorrow night, and again on Saturday. Good news: It’s money. Bad news: It’s time.
