Mid-Term Exam Answer

I’m enrolled in a Statistical QC class for my minor. The instructor is useless and doesn’t care about the class at all. He assigned us a Case Study with five questions. After writing 4 straight answers I got to the last one and couldn’t take it anymore. The quesion asked “You’re the Quality Manager but want to move from engineering to management, what is your plan?”

Here is my answer.

"Objective: To attain the position of Manufacturing Vice President at Metal Containers Inc.

Plan: Given that I have a large amount of knowledge in the areas of engineering and quality but a lack of skills or experience in the field of management my first step is to get a degree in management. Many local community colleges and traditional colleges offer management degree programs for working individuals.

These classes would allow me to respectably position myself for more managerial positions. Next I would make a move to takeover the management of one of Metal Containers plant?s quality departments. From there I would move to extend my power base by assimilating the manufacturing engineering department under the quality department. This would allow me to prove that not only can I be an effective quality manager, but I can also manage engineers.

After I have established myself as the center of quality for the plant under my control I would push for my management techniques be made standard operating procedures (SOP) at the other plants. This would make me the architect of the quality and manufacturing process for Metal Container Inc.

After a short rest period where I consolidate my power and strategically place lackeys in positions importance in my plant I would fabricate accounting records and hire an attractive intern who would then accuse the plant manager of sexual harassment. This charge combined with the ?Accounting Scandal? would insure the dismissal of the current plant manager. Considering I am the architect of the quality and manufacturing process I would be the natural choice for the position of plant manager.

At this point I begin contaminating Mr. Wallace?s coffee supply with low doses of iocane poison. After years of exposure this poison would cause an untraceable heart attack. The lackeys I installed earlier would then nominate me for the vacated position of Manufacturing Vice President, ensuring my meteoric rise to power."

sounds like a good plan to me at least an A-

LOL! I assume you are leaving out those last 2 paragraphs from the final answer, right? I like the rest of it, though. I work for a large aerospace company, so a lot of what you wrote made sense to me from a practical standpoint. At my company, the people who are committed to the quality improvement efforts get noticed in a big way, actually. Poor quality is a huuuuge killer to any manufacturing outfit.

There is a better approach.

  1. Find a good recruiter.

  2. Be on very good terms with your boss.

  3. Give your boss’s name to the recruiter.

  4. When your boss leaves, apply for the position.

  5. If you do not get the promotion then go to step 2.

I would only submit the last two paragraphs and omit all of that prior nonsensical gibberish.

That was funny.

Slightly related, and possibly a source of future tips:

Now we’re asking T-Nation folk to do our homework? Man-O-Man…

I would’ve given you an A+.

But then I am a sarcastic bastard, according to my friends.
