Metallica vs Megadeth

I went and saw Down this past weekend, it was a GREAT show. If you haven’t heard it, their first album (Nola) is on my short list of Best Metal Albums Ever.

FYI, Down is a ‘supergroup’ of sorts, comprised of members from Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and one other band (Lamb of God maybe?)

On the Metallica/Megadeth thing, I love them both, but was always more of a Metallica fan. Megadeth certainly wins in the ‘chops’ category, but Metallica (to my ears) has always had better songs. I’ve met Hetfield a few times, he’s always been very nice. Though one time he was fall-over drunk and not in the mood to talk.

Down plain kicks ass. NOLA forever has a place in me. That one is in my cd changer right now.

If you have any shot at seeing them live, do it. Phil seems to be back on his game. They played a lot of stuff from Nola (Lifer, Eyes of the South, Rehab, Stone the Crow, some others). They closed with Bury Me In Smoke, and it was one of the heavier moments of any show I’ve been to. Just HEAVY.

Believe me, if I ever hear that they will be playing anywhere near me, I’m there.

Listen to Among the Living, that album makes me headbang everytime.

I’m glad you refreshed my memory of this one. I played on the way to the gym and got goosebumps when “Caught in a Mosh” played. I forgot how good that album is.

Plus it has NFL. An Anthrax classic.

Only Anthrax could make “Hava Nagila” sound so metal. Wowee.

Can’t stand it for another day
I ain’t gonna live my life this way
Cold sweat, my fists are clenching
Stomp, stomp, stomp, the idiot convention

Which one of these words don’t you understand ?
All Caught in a mosh!

Talking to you is like clapping with one hand!
What is it? Caught in a mosh!

If I can backtrack, what’s with the hate for “Sweating Bullets?” That’s an amazing song…Dave’s best solo, IMO. He made a chromatic run sound amazing (rare feat) and played the whole thing in triplets. I thought those both involved a lot of creativity.

Also, he played that whole thing free of tapping and sweep picking (tricks many guitarists use to sound faster than they really are, chops-wise.) That whole thing was just super-coordinated fretwork/alternate picking. Regarding the rhythm parts, also, there’s a soft spot in my heart for flatted fifths. I love those things.

Personally, I like the song. I do find it a bit humorous, but I like to belt out the lyrics with a crazy face while driving.

Well it is on the greatest hits album. I just burnt a Megadeth compilation for a friend who has just ‘found’ metal and trying to win him over to Megadeth. I’d totally forgotten that Sweating Bullets made the grade in the greatest hits. Probably not in my top 20 but I like it because it is so fucked up.

The song makes much more sense if you’re already familiar with Mustaine.

Speaking of Megadeth hits, the album “Hidden Treasures” is a great short compilation of movie tracks and covers.

I wouldn’t say sweep picking is a trick, but that solo is pretty badass i thought it was Friedman at first, and then I was like whoa…he really is better than Hammett.

Megadeath all the way!!! Metallica has gotten away from the true metal sound. It’s more the money and fame for metallica.

No doubt, sweep picking and tapping are both great parts of ANY guitar players arsenal (provided (s)he knows how to use them.) But to play triplet eighth notes at 164bpm (Sweating Bullets) is fucking HARD if you’re just coordinating your fret hand with your right hand tremolo picking. Playing notes at that speed is child’s play if one is just tapping and not much more difficult with sweep picking. What I’m saying is, to play x notes at y tempo will always be harder with alternate picking than with sweep/tapping.

If I were to choose between the two bands TODAY: Megadeath would have an edge over the two bands. If this was 1990; Metallica. From Kill’m All to Black Album; fantastic. I even liked load/reload a bit; but the other albums since them are obviously different; and not in the best possible way.

I guess you can’t rock THAT hard for THAT long; something’s gotta give.

I really can’t say that I have listened to that much Megadeath, and I like much of the stuff Metallica has done. The only thing I really disliked was St. Anger, but then, I lkie most music. I have about six or seven hundred CD’s.

To the OP, I’d have to agree that Megadeth do more for their fans than Metallica. It is way too long between St Anger and the next album and it was the same deal before that.

Megadeth have brought out a good quality album in UA and it has been widely accepted by metal fans as a solid album. Hopefull Metallica can get back to what they used to do best and put something old school out which the fans have been screaming out for since …and Justice for All.

You gotta be crazee to think that Megadeth was or are better then metallica. Yeah, Metallica hadd some sucky albums, but fuck, Megadeth are just plain boring. Peace Sells… Possibly Rust in Peace, but Mustaine was so hit and miss that his drunkeness was a laughable fuck up, MANY TIMES! And Metallica can fuck 'em up when they try, unlike others. But Slayer kills 'em both
