Metallica - Death Magnetic

I swear I am the only person I know that just loved the raw production from St. Anger. I thought the songs were great, gritty and a welcome change from the shit they put out in the 90’s.

I was maybe 12 when I bought Kill 'Em All when it came out (ie original release) and have been with them since. I would rather them have broken up than to release that pop-crap radio candy.

I’m listening to this new one now-- thank God for 8-10 minute songs. Not too shabby to far. Trujillo was a great addition to this band-- and accomplished guitar player as well as just a kick ass bass player.

Like many great rock bands that have gotten sober, become mediocre.

Sad to say.

I’ve unpacked, Cassetti. You’re a good man.

I am still packed up ready to go

like any other early/mid 90s metalhead I am angry and looking for any excuse to get violent

bottle of bushmills each and lets go…

oh my goodness,my friend.

at my buddies bar we had a drinking contest with bushmills single malt. and to wash it down we had our choice of beer but no water.
I chose simply bud ice

I only wish I would have asked that mexican chick what her name was before I left her house

how sell out is that.
I dislike the term sell out. Mostly because it implies that metallica did something to deliberately sell records. They tried something radically different with St. Anger and it sort of bit them in the ass, but they made the album they wanted to make. That’s the opposite of “selling out.” Probably the same with this album.

I’m a pretty die hard metallica fan, though. I like everything from them. That said, some albums you can listen to straight through. They haven’t put one of those since Justice, IMO. Maybe this is the one?!

If you can listen to all of unforgiven III without your ears bleeding all the power to you.

Ok, the first 5 songs were AWESOME. The rest I could do without.

But overall, compared to most albums, that’s a pretty damn good ratio. Definitely worth buying.

OK, Unforgiven III has a section that’s a blatant ripoff of STP’s “Creep”.

You aren’t the only one. I remember telling a friend that I liked the drum sound and he goes, “It sounds like he’s hitting trash can in a hangar.” I just liked all the overtones and how raw it sounded.

I like the guitar sound a lot of St. Anger, but didn’t like the drums too much. The guitar though…heavy. Like a mesa/boogie thump on the low end with all kinds of rich overtones and thick overdrive. Diezel amps I guess.

It’s certainly no Master of Puppets, but it’s damn sure a step in the right direction. I’m as die-hard of a Metallica fan as they come, but I absolutely hated everything since Justice. Hopefully this album spawns a new era of kick-me-in-the-balls-and-break-an-empty-bottle-of-Georgi-over-my-face Metallica albums like the good old days.

I guess I’m one of the few that has liked every Metallica album (except for St. Anger), INCLUDING Load and Re-Load. However, I treat everything after …And Justice For All as a different type of Metallica…

I actually like The Unforgiven III, contrary to most of the opinions so far. Its definitely slow and more melodic, but I think its a good song, for what it is. Digging the solo at the end, too.

So far I’m liking the new album.

Thank GOD they put solos back in this album!

What sacrilege. I had to wonder if they even let Kirk play on St. Anger or if they just strapped him to a chair and made him watch them butcher the art of guitar work.

That entire album was a complete and utter abomination to mankind’s history on this planet, slightly out-ranking the Holocaust and the Inquisition. I would rather cut off my schlong with a rusty SPAM lid and die of gangrene in my groin than listen to that album ever again.

I will never refer to that album by name again.

Ok, so I give this album a 65% on first listen.

Master of Puppets/Justice being 99% and the Terrible Abyss being 0%. It’s a step in the right direction for sure, and it’s listenable, with more than a few downright enjoyable moments, and a couple moments of resurgent past glory.

Pros:

All Nightmare Long
SOLOS
a number of actual metal riffs appear in this album…finally.
All Nightmare Long
fast tempos return
angry chord progressions that (mostly) sound like chord progressions, not
masturbatory guitar-noodling hell.

All Nightmare Long. Finally, Thrash reappears full-blown! Holy God have I
been waiting for this moment to come. Great song.Reminds me of
Dyer’s Eve somehow, even though it’s not as good.

Particular Note: The solo to This Was Your Life. Too short, but reminds me
of parts of early Kirk’s work on Master of Puppets. Similar construction
and chromatic ideas. Master’s solos reached far greater heights, but
this album shows similar musical ideas re-emerging in Kirk’s work.

CONS:

THOSE FUCKING DRUMS!! GODDAMN TRASHCAN BANGING!
Ok, I exaggerate somewhat. Somewhat. Lar$ hasn’t been great…
well, ever. It still sounds like what Lar$ did on the Nameless Horror.
But at least I can listen to most of this album without wanting to slide
down a 75 foot long razor blade and pour lemon juice
in my wounds like I did on that abortion.

James’s voice. He has a number of weak moments. However, he’s getting
old, so I’m not pissed about it. He has very significant failings when he
tries to pseudo rap like he did for Aberration. However, he’s much
better overall, and several pretty good moments. Final Verdict: OK.

Song length. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Several times I felt
like they came up with a good plan for a song, but were milking the
concept dry, and should have cut it off a couple minutes earlier.

Production value. Better than the last two “efforts”, but not as great as it
should be. Hard to place exactly what my problem with it is. Tone is
one of them. THE TRASH CANS are another.

I hate when people beat around the bush.

Could you please just tell us how you really feel about the album that shall not be named? (TATSNBN)

Thanks for the link xD you made my day!

right so has anyone had a good few listens?

fave track?
worst track?

So far so good, listening to the unforgiven III now, ehhh.

edit: anything is better than that last abortion of an album.

Fave track: #5 – “All Nightmare Long”

Worst track: #3 – “The Unforgiven 3”

By the way, I’m going to your country in a few weeks. Flying into Shannon and spending about 5 days on the west coast. How are the ladies there?

Very good, comfortable… therapeutic even.

HERE’S the early version of “End of the Line” that I was talking about! Fast-forward to about 2:57, after the 2 slow intros (first one where Trujillo’s bass was the wrong one, then he got the RIGHT bass guitar, then they did the slow intro again). At about 2:57 the FAST intro part that I was talking about starts, and it fucking ROCKS!!! That was the best part of the fuckin’ song!! Why would they take it out??

The only thing I’m upset about so far is that in the second song, End of the Line, which was the one they’d been performing live month ago just calling it “New Song,” (see YouTube) they took out the super-fast double-bass drum / guitar lead-in that kicked in right after the slower intro. That part rocked!!! Why’d they take it out?!

But the album rocks so far!!

Do you mean “Cyanide”?

That was the best part of the song.
I just got it but have yet to listen.

If Lars is still using that mother fucking bell brass snare I’m going to eat my ride cymbal.
