Melatonin Day Before a Workout

Anyone else have any experience with this? I haven’t been sleeping to well and melatonin resets my sleep patterns pretty well, but this is the first time that I tried it the day b4 a workout.

Now I’m explosive as fuck, my absolute strength is pretty shitty, but if a weight is in a decent range I can damn near throw it. (when i had a training partner months ago, i could ballistic bench 95#'s 9inches from my outstretched arms my max bench was 175 at the time)

Normally I can 1 arm snatch 110lbs.

melatonin slowed me the FUCK down. I could barely 1 arm snatch 75lbs 5x

Even when I did DE benching, 115-135 felt heavy as hell when I tried to move it fast. I felt like I was stuck in mud.

Here’s the interesting part:

I decided to try a heavy 2x5 and (surprisingly) I could grind out 225-245 like it was no problem, hell i paused at the bottom (my chest) for 4-5 seconds before lifting again and it was no big deal.

I can NEVER grind out lifts, if it’s not moving fast it’s not moving at all.

Yesterday was just WEIRD for me.

Anyone ever have any experience with thi,s or maybe the planets were just aligned right…

Hmm. Don’t know why melatonin would have that effect. I sometimes have trouble sleeping, and I’ll take one. I’ve never noticed anything different in my workouts than normal.

i regularly/nightly use 9mg of melatonin. at first for a coupla years, took a year off, now back on. ive not noticed any changes in lifting other than positive sleep effects.

what you experienced is probly not melatonin. there are sooooooooooooooooooooo many factors…

With melatonin, 3 mg and I have to drag myself outta bed even after 10 hours of sleep. After a couple of hours of being awake, I usually feel better but the first few hours are tough. Haven’t really noticed any effect on my training.

9mg is quite a bit, I’ve heard 1-2mgs is just as effective. Xen, how much did you take?

ive experimented with many different doses. 1mg, 3mg, 5mg, 6mg, 9mg, 10mg, 12mg, 15mg, 18mg, 21mg, 24mg, 27mg, and even 30mg.

i like 9mg the best. i wake up widely precisely 6 hours after taking them.

it’s different for everybody.

OMG! I guess it must be different for everyone. I am just really surprised you would take 9mg and only sleep for 6 hours.

it seems to make the sleep i do get more meaningful. i do end up sleeping for 8ish hours because i like to go back to sleep, but the melatonin sleep is gone after 6. it could be that i built up to this. maybe at first it wasn’t like this, but i dont remember cause i was massively depressed and wanted to sleep all day anyway.

another thing. it’s easier for me to nap during the day when i regularly take melatonin. also, i can sleep just fine without it at night. so that kinda goes against the idea that it stops your body from being able to produce it.

so yeah, it is different for everybody.

P.S. i remember reading that up to 100mg have been used in women (perhaps elderly women) and didn’t show any negative effects.

P.P.S. 1-3mg does almost nothing for me, and 30mg makes me so groggy i can barely think when i wake up to piss within 8 hours of taking it. but, come to think of it, if i had loads of cash and some more info i’d probly try experiments with 50+mg on a regular basis.

i’ve read melatonin works as a sedative only when your natural levels are low.
but i’ve never used it. i have used 5htp.
last year my sleep was really messed up, i moved and went from years of going to sleep at 2-3am to waking up waking up @ 5am. after 6 months of that i still couldn’t fall asleep before 2am. i had no trouble falling asleep mid-day but once 8 oclock came around i was up.i was a mess. friend recommended 5-htp. it really kicked ass for me. i took it for a month. never had any hangover.

just googled outta curiosity.
for what it’s worth:

<<<Melatonin vs. 5-HTP

5-HTP bypasses the brain’s light-regulation system that controls the secretion of melatonin. 5-HTP results in the increased the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine that stimulate the noradrenergic receptors in the brain. This stimulation directly triggers the production and release of melatonin.
Thus, when you take 5-HTP, it causes the release of melatonin irrespective of how much light is present. The higher levels of melatonin in circulation, helps you to fall asleep and stay asleep better.

People with low melatonin who take 5-HTP at nighttime can enjoy the same sleep enhancing benefits as they will from taking melatonin alone, but they will also be getting the broader spectrum of benefits that comes from increased serotonin levels. (If you take melatonin alone it does not enhance the functions of the serotonin system.)

The effects of 5-HTP on melatonin depend on:
bullet How much 5-HTP you take and
bullet Time of the day 5-HTP is taken.

People who use melatonin as a sleep sedative may find that switching from melatonin to 5-HTP will make it easier to fall asleep and to stay asleep. They will also enjoy healthy and memorable dream periods, and wake up without the morning grogginess that some of them experience with melatonin.>>>

funny, because 5HTP does nothing for me. it’s possible that it used to, cuz i took a lot. but i’ve never been serotonin deficient.

5htp didn’t do anything for me either. Melatonin cured my snoring and helped me sleep much better, 3mg a night.

Hmmmm not the melatonin

maybe it was the weed.

Yeah 3mg knocks me on my ass and makes me drag for a an hour or two after waking up.

I will hunt down the italian studies, but you guys seriously don’t want to take more than 3-4mg for any prolonged period as it can result in testicular atrophy. Also as far as the waking up feeling trainwrecked, melatonin can detoxifying recreational drugs from the brain. Not saying you use them, but if you have that is more than likely why you feel wrecked in the AM.

Melatonin has never worked very well for me. I have been using the Yin stack from Charles Polquin’s website. It is Magnesium,Phosphotidyl Choline, and Taurine. There is a article about it on his website

the 3mg stuff does not make me sleepy at all but i take it in conjuction with a serving of ZMA and a childrens aspirin b4 i go to bed and i need to have sound sleep for atleast 6 hours. I hate waking up in the middle of the night so i’ve had good results with the protocol so far. I don’t have any problems in the morning either. if i’m already tired and know i will knock out i don’t take it. i need to stay receptive to the drug. laters pk
