Meet Nutrition

there are probably more opinions about this than anything else in powerlifting…

sorry, but this is only for people who have actually competed. A super-hard bicep workout is not a powerlifting meet so I don’t care what you ate during your last workout it’s not the same.

what do you eat at a meet? I have seen and tried everything from bags of burger king to just drinking shakes. Most meets last a good part of a day or all day so you have to eat something, so out of curiosity what do you guys eat at a meet? And what sort of meet do you compete in? obviously a bench only meet will be different from full power… you could also post anything about pre-meet nutrition… I feel good about my steak, potatoes, and pedialite but it might be interesting to hear all of the different opinions…

Peanut butter, banana, and jelly sandwiches, gatorade, chocolate.

I avoid anything that will hurt coming back up. I do full power meets, with a two hour weighin.

I usually weigh in at 6 PM the day before the meet. I’ll try to drink a gallon of water by 11 PM and I’ll eat at a pasta place usually an hour after the weigh-ins. The day of the meet, I’ll eat something light for breakfast, usually grits and eggs, before lifting starts at 9 Am. Then, I’ll eat a regular old bagel between each lift while drinking a lot of water between each attempt.

Full Power, with two hour weigh in here as well.
I like Bananas , PB&J , high carb protein bars, lots of water , a little gatorade , and right before deadlift warm ups either coffee/redbull and a small candy bar for a little boost. My advice is to stay away from meat or food that sits heavy in your stomach on meet day.I eat that type of food the day before.

Full power meets, 2 hour weigh in (IPF)
I have a lucky breakfast after weight-in, which includes bacon, some form of eggs, bacon, potatoes, bacon, half liter of milk and bacon (and a coffee). I always make sure the night before to scope out restaurants close to the venue and order in advance if possible so not to waste time.

During the meet, water, peanut M&Ms and possibly a PB&J with more milk. With a huge breakfast I’m usually not feeling the need for more food during the meet. I have a friend who brings a cooler full of deli meat, cheese, gatorade, protein shakes etc and eats all day long. I find I lose my appetite during the day and even though I’m dreaming about a huge meal when it’s over, the last 2 meets I had no appetite at all for a few days afterwards.
Sucks when you think fettucine alfredo is going to taste so good but makes you want to puke instead.

gatorade, peanut butter, bananas, tub of almonds to snack on, peanut M&M’s are good too, shakes. Nothing crazy mainly small foods I can snack on while at a full power meet.

Has anyone here had any experience using some of the Biotest supps for meets? I was thinking Surge Workout Fuel and FINiBARs in particular, but also maybe downing a bit of Surge Recovery after each set of lifts before moving on to the next motion.

With night before weighins, ill eat a ton of starchy foods and salt after weighins. the day of the meet, id eat a solid rounded breakfast and then graze the rest of the day on things like bagels and fruits and lots of gatorade. with a short weighin, i use the template i did for wrestling. Kill a bottle of gatorade the minute i step off the scale. fill it with water and drink that. then a chicken salad sandwich. then light food the rest of the day.

I had a 2 hour weigh in too. I didnt cut so i was fine, just drank a bang, and ate whtever I could stomack. I would co with the PBJ, or chicken and rice. Our meet was so long that I went to a resturant in between bench only and my deadlift because there was 6 flights, then bench only, and i was number 3, I couldnt stomach shit that night.

Now since im doing the night before weigh in, I will cut, get off the scale and start rehydrating, and go get a shitload of carbs, and protein. then next day have pbj, gatorade, and FiNiBars.

I used the Workout Fuel once during a meet, never again. Too sweet and made my heart race, although I liked it in the gym. Being a little on edge during practice works for me, but I need to be relaxed come competition time.

I have two Spike Shooters on the day of the meet.

I normally eat solid food during the day of the meet. Gotta have a burrito before benching. Get a big belly.

Old topic, but figured it’s worth a bump to share my experience. At the meet I did in February, my day/day before pretty much looked like this:

Day before: eat light breakfast, light lunch around 12:30, then weigh in at 6 (barely made weight–274.5 for the 275 weight class!). I advise taking a dump.

After that I went out to an all you can eat seafood & steak buffet. It was awesome. I probably put on 10 lbs there haha.

Day of the meet I woke up 1.5 hours before the briefing.

Breakfast was Hardees: biscuit & gravy, bacon egg and cheese biscuit, and a butter biscuit.

I mixed up 4 scoops of Workout Fuel & 10g creatine in a 1 liter bottle and sipped that throughout the day with bigger chugs when the lift changed (squat to bench, bench to deadlift).

Had one FINiBAR before lunch.

Lunch was Hardees again: 1/2 lb cheesbureger, double cheeseburger, fries, soda (probably not the best idea with the soda).

One more FINiBAR couple hours after lunch.

Mixed up 3 scoops Surge Recovery and slammed half of that in the middle of deadlift (after I had ran out of WO Fuel). Finished the rest after the meet ended.

Post meet was Hardees (again): 2 double cheesburgers and fries. then lots of booze to celebrate.

So yeah, I didn’t get the Hardee’s spokesperson deal that I was going for, but I did do pretty well for my first meet (1300 total) and was happy with that, and felt pretty energized throughout the day, even for my last pull which I figured I would have been exhausted for.

i normally drop alot of water weight the few days before the weigh in. and i always weigh in early. so i have a full day to gain back all the water. and get a good bloat going. ive read eating alot of salty food will retain all the water, thus giving u the bloat, and increasing your max lift! i read an article by Jim Wendler i think. and he said to eat 1/2 bag of salt and vinegar chips at lunch and dinner. and all day live on sushi gatorade soy sauce rice pasta and other salty food to get the good bloat. but idk. whatever works for you bud!

Ok, I think the best meet nutrition should go as followed

1-Gatorade
2-zebra cakes
3-pizza
4-dip
5-NOS energy drinks
