Yeah X, it is bodybuilding, and bodybuilding is a visual and subjective competition. I have yet to see a bodybuilding judge break out a tape-measure to help him determine the difference between physiques on stage during a competition. Certainly, the tape can be a useful at times; especially with new lifters. But great changes can be made in one’s physique that can not be accurately reflected by a tape measure, but are easy to see with the eye. And “short” is a relative term. Zane isn’t considered “short” by bodybuilding standards. Zane defeated a much bigger Arnold at one point. Arnold out weighed Zane by 50 pounds. Arnold learned his lesson, became much leaner, and Zane was never a serious threat to Arnold ever again. The tape doesn’t guage vascularity, density, muscle shape, etc. A leaner, harder better conditioned Arnold, was an improvement over the bigger, softer previous edition. Even though the tape and scale would have displayed numbers that were smaller, Arnold’s physique, for bodybuiding purposes was better. And I never mentioned anything about about the tape-measure “holding someone back” You just made that shit up.
Once again, my main points are missed.
A. The tape measure is good for viewing growth as several months down the road you can compare measurements and SEE growth. The mirror is NOT the end all be all form of progress viewing. Actually, its pretty bad. Why? you can skew things. You see yourself daily, you dont look differently day to day. If you took pictures monthly to analyze, yes, id say thats a productive form of VISUAL progress check.
B. Proportions proportions Proportions. If you think you look fantastic, but have 20 inch arms with 22 inch legs, you dont have your proportions down (I saw a guy in the gym yesterday whose arms were bigger than the rest of his body. He had a tiny body with massive arms. Absolutely no muscle anywhere else. Literally, his arms were larger than his legs). The point of this thread, with the calculators and measuring, was to give people an idea of proportions. Were the calculators correct in their analysis? no, not fully. BUT once again, its to give people an IDEA, give them a grasp on proportions. And no, we arent fucking talking Professionals here. If i wanted this to be put up with our more experienced members, i wouldve put it in Tcell. But i didnt, i posted it in the public portion of the forum because i think thats where it does the most good. The guys in Tcell have a grasp on the need for proportions, not everyone else does.
ALL of our goals is to get bigger, but you have to fully understand the need for balance. Say you want to put on an inch on your delts, get them wider. Well, you sure as hell better have quads that match that goal, otherwise you’re basically taking points away from yourself. Thats the point of this sport. You can have a fantastic body, but if you’re severely lacking in one area, YOU LOSE.

Thats what I meant basically but you said it a lot better. It is a useful tool if used right, you can argue that. And the whole comment about frank zane and arnold that studgorrilla wrote… you totally missed the point.
With the Zane/Arnold thing, I was trying to give a historical example demonstrating that the winner with the tape-measure doesn’t always win the competition. Physique improvements don’t always show up on the tape-measure. And furthermore, refining and perfectiong the mass can have an effect that results in visual improvements, inspite of diminished numbers. Obviously, in Akuma01’s example of the dude who’s arms are bigger than his legs, we have an extreme perversion of not paying attention to proportions. And proportions are of prime importance. I was operating under the assumption that we want to get all of our muscles bigger and better. Someone who neglets leg training to such an extent hardly qualifies as a “bodybuilder” since the lower body makes-up about half of the body.
But I agree with you fellas. Akuma01’s post was well stated. Maybe I did miss the original point a bit. I just wanted to emphasize the point of not getting “too caught- up with the numbers.”

Well said
S
Alright, for the sake of Humility and Accountability (lol) here’s mine…
Age: 25
Ht: 5’11ish
Wt: 183lbs
Wrist: 7.25
Chest: 46.0
Forearm: 13.5
Waist: 33.0
Thigh: 22.50
Hip: 38.5
Calves: 14.25
Bicep: 16.50
Neck: 15.25
Ideal Greek Proportions:
Chest: 47.1
Forearm: 13.7
Waist: 33.0
Thigh: 25.0
Hip: 40.1
Calves: 16.0
Bicep: 17.0
Neck: 17.4
ACCORDING to this, I need a LOT of work! Some things I’m close on, and somethings I’m in BFE when it comes to ‘ideal’. Wheels obviously need much more work, but then again that’s why I love this sport! You’re never where you wanna be! Constant goal setting and achieving those, then making new ones!
