I think the common theme between the “that’s what I did and I look like balls” crowd is that they didn’t know what they were dling.
What if you knew what you were doing, had nutrition dialed in and were on an “upper only” split?
Could this really work?
Could you use up all your noob gains on upper body instead of splitting it between upper and lower?
Abso-freaking-lutely. Oldest noob trick in the book. I did it, about 15 years ago. Who the shit gvies a damn about legs when you’re a 17 year old kid looking to hit some pussy? Chicks dont care care about rear delts, but they DAMN sure sure dont care about hamstrings.
My noob gains were incredible and I think when Immaxed them out I was nearly 10kg heavier than I am now, and I had no legs, so I must have been big.
Dude you’re CRAZY if you think chicks don’t care about the azzzz!! they love glutes just as much as a good upper body. why not develop both upper and lower?

That has to be one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever.
I don’t think your noob gains are lost if you never trained them. I think noob-gains work only for the untrained muscles. So if you have never trained legs, and started training now, you would gain quite much leg muscle in the beginning imo.
If your noob gain potential is 20lbs muscle, you wont be able to make the whole 20lb go to your upper body. Every part of your body has a certain potential to adapt, once you get to a predetermined point along this adaptation, the noob gains stop.
If you have the potential for 20lb noob gains total and dont work legs, you will gain a small amount of muscle on your legs from the weight gain but probably only make 10lb of total noob gains until you train legs, then you will finish the noob gains.

This is the flip side of the coin that I was also considering.
This makes sense but what if that’s not how it works?
It has to work like that. Imagine if you narrow it down further, it’s like saying if you only train delts for the first year would you get 10lbs of muscle growth in your delts? impossible. Each muscle has a size it will reach easily (noob gains) and then a maximum size it will reach after years of stimulation and food (genetic potential)
If I were just starting training ALL over again, and KNEW my goals were aesthetics, I would definitely emphasize
-Upper Chest
-Lat Width
-Medial Delts
-Quad Sweep
I’d still focus on those Big Lifts to get strong, but I would DESTROY those above, so at least my ‘dominant’ points would likely be those ‘trouble’ areas for people trying to get a solid X-frame.
