Well, I’ve recently just got a £400 bonus that I didn’t know I was getting and I’ve not spent it yet. And right now I’m thinking about getting myself a decent high quality mattress this time.
About 18 months ago (Nov 2012 roughly)… I got a silentnight memory foam mattress off amazon because it was ‘on sale’… And I personally think it’s made my lower back pain worse as it’s far far too soft and doesn’t support me. Basically I don’t feel re-charged in the morning, I actually feel sore and about 3x my age.
So now, instead of randomly searching Amazon with keywords, I’ve done some research and it seems that for best support I’m looking for an ‘orthopedic memory foam mattress’ that is ‘medium to firm’. But obvi that isn’t set in stone for everyone and there are various individual factors in take into consideration. I sleep on my back with a pillow below my knees… well I at least start that way but not being comfy I tend to move on to my side during my sleep.
I’ve found two so far on the internet, but I’m not jumping in to it. I’m going to go to a bed shop and actually try out the different types first and see.
You’ve already been unhappy with a knock off Tempur bed, another one isn’t going to bode well for you either.
Save your $ and get a real TEMPUR PEDIC. TRUST ME, you will not regret it.
Your knock off mattress is not where in the same league as a real Tempur bed. Been sleeping on A TP for 12 years and cannot go back to a regular bed. I’d seriously rather sleep in the floor.
FWIW, my 3 kids have knock off Tempur beds and I’ve slept on them a few times. and can attest to the not being in the same league as the bed.
what sold me was buying a TEMPUR pillow. After a year of sleeping on the thing it was like brand new, whereas SEVERAL knock off Memory foam pillows I had paid for went flat after 2 months, if I was lucky. That old adage of “you buy nice, or you buy twice” is true in this case.
Another option to consider is to use a layering approach.
You can start with a firm, supportive spring mattress, bordering on the “too firm” end of the spectrum.
Then put a layer of vented memory foam over that, 2-3" thick.
Then put a pillowtop mattress topper over that.
(You can also use mattress protectors between the layers to protect them from accumulating moisture and dust mites.)
The mattress topper gives you some initial softness and breathability, but no support. The memory foam gives you another layer of softness and conforms to your body, and provides some degree of support. Then the actual mattress itself provides any support not covered by the previous layers.
Many premium mattresses are actually designed like this internally, but you can do it yourself. If/when any component needs replaced, you can do that without replacing the whole bed.

Which Tempurpedic do you have ?
I love the Rhapsody mattress, it literally feels like laying on a cloud, but not too soft.
I have not found anything that is able to get up into the low back curvature like this mattress. Seriously, after sleeping on this mattress, it’s like having a new body in the morning.
The memory foam one I have the now is completely foam. As before posting this, I took all the covers off the bed to examine the mattress. and it’s just a giant piece of pish foam with a zipped cover over it. I have took the cover off, fliped the mattress and put the cover back on.
However, what I’ve just realised too, is that even after doing that, the side I sleep at is still saggy, which lead me to the base of the base and with it only being a cheap MDF base … that also probably isn’t helping the saggy matters. So Im thinking about just investing in the whole bed.
I walked around to ‘Archers’ the bed shop around the corner from where I live. It was worth the visit to actually feel the different mattresses.
I had a conversation with the guy and he was very helpful and zero pushing for sales. So that was good.
He pointed me towards Sealy, PosturePedic. So I tried a few that they had on show under Medium to Firm. I really liked the feel of Sealy Diamond Latex and especially more so the Sealy Geltex Fusion (
They have sale tags up but I always find that hard to believe or not. Nevertheless the Sealy Diamond Latex which is the PosturePedic range would be within my price range I initially mentioned in the OPO and the Sealy Geltex which is in the Hydride collection would be over, being £689 i think for double mattress.
Obviously I was only going by a quick initial feel of what I thought but I had good vibes from them as a few others classed as medium to firm in the cat 3 and felt way too saggy! I’m going to go back around to tomorrow and see the difference with ‘firm’ testing and have a another check. Really just a good excuse to get a lie down 2minute break in the afternoon
I work for a furniture company and they carry Gold Bond mattresses although I’m not sure if you can get them overseas or not. Do your research, but the difference in price is justified the majority of the time. You spend about 1/3 of your life on this thing and a great mattress is more than worth spending some extra money. The cheap ones just aren’t worth it. What I’ve learned working there from customer feedback is this:
-Sleep number - you either love them or hate them, they just aren’t suited for all types of people and their sleeping positions.
-Memory foam - The difference in mattress thickness has a lot to do with comfort, even if the internal structure is the same. Get one that has the company’s temperature control top.
-Innerspring - Don’t overlook these. If you haven’t had a good night’s sleep on one it’s because it simply isn’t the right type of innerspring mattress for you.
Any good mattress company will have a good warranty and maybe the store you buy from as well will have a sleep on it for a month trial.

Does anyone have any experience with the Bed In A Box mattresses?[/quote]
My son sleeps on one now that I had for about 9 months before I gave it to him. That was the cheap replacement for the sleep number I lost in the divorce. For the price, it wasn’t bad at all.

I have had one for a few months now…really like it. No more aches and pains when I wake up. I don’t have much to compare it to though. I was sleeping on an old inner spring mattress that was sagging to the point that I felt I was sleeping in a hammock. I am a stomach sleeper so a bed of nails would have been more comfortable.

Awesome, thanks doogie and Clinton. From what I’ve read, they say they keep the prices down by not advertising and having only online store. The warranties still seem pretty solid and everyone seems to give them great reviews.
