Matt Smith is ready to take the role as the youngest actor to ever play the doctor. I’m a bit dissapointed with the choice, I was rooting for the first ever black candidate for the job. I feel like a move in the younger direction is just more placating of the fangirls and the romance crowd who basically ruined the dynamic between Rose and Eccleston when Tennant took over.

Ditto.
Tom was on Have I Got News for you recently and he was a hoot
Bring him back! who says Dr has to be younger? time lord, he can be any age and at any time.
they are trying to appeal to a younger/new audience I think.

For this guy, they need to change the name to “Dr. WTF”
Did not take long to get used to Patrick Troughton and then he was great for years. He used to beat up the bad guys sometimes with some whacky martial arts. Jon Pertwee grew on me pretty quickly too.
Tom Baker - for the first half of his first episode I thought “what the heck?” but then, by end of that episode, won me over. And he was great for ages. Many great episodes and I liked K9 very much.
Peter Davison - argh … got used to him but never really liked him. Colin Baker - hated at first, but began to grow on me but took a loong time. these 2 docs I did not like the first time they aired and I stopped watching but caught on a re-airing a few years later (10 years?)
Sylvester McCoy … who? Paul McGann …? wtf? Cannot remember a single episode.
Christopher Eccleston … blah.
David Tennant … not bad why is he leaving? I am confused.
Anyway my theory is that it just takes time and you can get used to any doctor. However I do not know about bringing someone so young into the role, maybe he does not have what it takes to give the character some oomph.
Tennant look like a mighty douche but his acting ended up being spot on (minus the BS they threw in with him and Rose).
For me, each actor is less about the look, and more about how he pulls off the Doctors personality.
Eccleston was colder, but still curious. He played up the doctors bluntness. Tennant played up his curiosity (no one says “Brilliant!” just like David Tennant). No idea how this guy will play him, but it’ll definitely be interesting to see.
As for the fans of the previous shows (pre-9th doctor) can anyone give me a link to somewhere where I can watch the older episodes?

I’m not going to stop watching the show just because the Doctor has to regenerate. Frankly, I’m really happy that show will continue through 2010 at the bare minimum. Anyway, if I understand correctly, Tennant will still be the Doctor for the fifth season.
The cold, sort of mysterious manner that Eccleston brought to the new series kind of reminded me of William Hartnell. Not quite sure why.
As far as getting ahold of old episodes. You can probably find them on some bit torrent or another. Also, many of them are available from Netflix.
