Matt Hughes VS Royce Gracie in May

I saw an older fight of his where he was at a lower weight. (can’t remember the fight, he lost by decision though) His face looked quite normal then. When he went up in weight, I think it all went to his cheeks.

But to get back on topic, I have my heart set on Gracie winning the fight. I highly doubt that he could, but I will have my “Gracie For President” shirt on.[/quote]

People do gain weight all over their body. But I think about 20% of BJ’s weight gain went directly to his face.

One question still remains: how can such a face be so perfectly round? Weight gain didn’t do that. He was born with a perfectly round face…And the combination of it being perfectly round and incredibly fat is sort of odd.

I think I am done talking about it now, unless anyone wants to add anything else to the topic.

As far as Gracie goes, I would love to see him win as well. But as I have stated, that’s my heart talking. My head says he has no chance.

This must be the only rational thread on the Internet (ever!) discussing MMA of any sort. Dear God! Thank you!

Only comment:

If Hughes tries to play Gracie’s ground game, Gracie will have ample opportunities. Hughes ability to submit others is only partially correlated with his ability to defend against submissions … particularly if they start really rolling as opposed to being locked.

Strength and stand-up should go to Hughes.

ZEB mentioned speed (and muscle). On the ground, I think experience (the way muscle is utilized) is tremendously important … is it as important as muscle? We’ll find out … that’s probably the best thing about this fight. Experience and technique versus the modern, rounded MMA fighter and strength.

Any Pittsburgh area T-Nationers want to throw a UFC party?

Mark

Hey now, Royce didn’t loose to Sakuraba. Sakuraba cheated. Watch the fight again and you’ll find out that Royce tapped him out up by the ropes in the second round, but Sakuraba was to much of a cheater to admit it. If you don’t belive me watch the fight. Then Royce got frustrated and his family threw the towell in.

I think Royce can win this fight, but he’s going to have to train hard, and practice his stand up. Definitely his stand-up.

Take care.

Matt Hughes is extremely tough, and I’ve seen him pull off submissions and knockouts after getting hit with five solid blows to the face. He is an excellent wresler and has incredible strength, and is very well rounded in general.

However, despite any sort of training he may be doing now, he cannot match Royce Gracie in endurance. Gracie proved this endurance with sakuraba, a 90 minute match. Gracie is also one of the world’s best grapplers, hands-down, and no slouch any other aspect. He is in even better physical shape than when he first became UFC champion, despite being 39.

The only hope matt hughes has is to keep the fight on their feet. But that won’t happen. He will ground Gracie, probably pound Gracie, but once they are on the ground, Gracie will gain control. He’ll beat Hughes by submission. It might be in the first round, or the second, but that doesn’t matter to someone who’s been competing in the Japanese circuits for the past five years.

Those fights were lame. And then the BIG announcement…bunk. Once I saw Matt Hughes come out, I was like “Dude, please be St.Pierre!” Schnope. Old man Gracie. Hey the dude was nails back in the early to mid 90’s. He blew my mind at how just a normal looking guy could take out someone that looked all diesel by just grabbing a limb. But Matt Hughes is a different story. Gracie WAS good but Hughes is the real deal. He’ll pick up Gracie and carry him across the ring and slam him just like everyone else, only it will be more brutal. Yeah Gracie put it on the map, but Hughes is the staple of MMA and UFC. I give it 2 minutes into the first round. The strength difference is too big.

Royce went 90 minutes with Sakuraba. I highly doubt it going to be over in 2 minutes. Royce has beat alot stronger guys than Hughes also. I think Hughes will win, but it’ll be a good one.

I also agree with whoever said this should be BJ Penns fight. Penn has to wait along time now to take back what is rightfully his.

As a former Gracie student, I have seen Royce fight back in the mid 80’s and would choke out a lot of guys who very strong, bodybuilders, powerlifters, and weightlifters.

If you have ever studied BJJ you know that you will always roll with your instructor. I know that Royce is probably rolling hours on the mat tapping out a lot of BJJ black belts preparing for this fight. His strength is deceptive and he has so much ground experience that Matt will have a tough time stopping Royce if it goes to the ground. I predict Royce will win but I am bias as I train in BJJ.

What kind of dogs are those. My buddy had one and he had a collection of collars that he busted (like 15 of em). I know there strong as hell, I believe they’re Bull somethings.

How old is Gracie?

Hughes is an incredible physical specimen.

Does Gracie have something in his bag of tricks Hughes is not aware of?

When Gracie did so well at the beginning he beat a lot of people that didn’t understand what he was doing.

Now a lot of people copied his techniques.

I think Gracie will find it a little tougher this time around.

exactly!!! people COPY his technique. he’s still the best at what he does.

Man, you are not talking about a simple fighter.

You are talking about Royce Gracie, the brazilian that almost alone, made jiu-jitsu have the name that it has today.
Gracie is a living legend of the sport, and there is no draw to him, you could see that in the fight versus Sakuraba.

He was punched, that’s right, but he does not surrender, is a true warrior.

He never lets the fight stop, so the people who say the fight is decision for Matt are really saying wrong things.

Matt Hughes is a great fighter too. He knows kick boxing and submission, a “complete” player?? Well… For me, a complete player is those that dominated the area in that they fight.

Brazil has one of the best package of fighters of all the world.

Do you know Vanderlei Silva, Gracies, Minotauro, Minotouro, Mauricio Shogun, Ricardo Arona, so…

How can you say that the times have changed for the world of fights, if few years before, Royce has defeated much stronger opponents than him. Had not they time to study Royce, and aprimorate their techniques to fight against him??

So, the times have changed and Royce too.
I am not predicting the future, but I have certainty that Royce Gracie will give his soul for more one fight, and with all the technic that he has, there is no doubt that this will be a great match.

I’d like to take a moment to laugh in your face. Hughes > Gracie.
