Martial Arts

which martial arts are best for fighting against people with weapons (bats, knives, crow bars, etc…) ?

Hmmm… Maybe the NRA?

Jai Alai with 44 magnum

Systema, or so I’m told

Yup, JD’s got it right. I’ve never studied it myself but I’ve also heard that it’s the best (or at least good) for going against multiple opponents. But, it wouldn’t be my first choice for regular one on one fighting.

Filipino styles.

There is a martial art that I think is called Kali that is all about stick fighting. I think it originates from the Phillipines.

Do you live in the 1950’s?

Sprinting.

Nike.

Yeah … I won my last fight by three blocks!

So, which discipline do you prefer for one on one? And do you like to take your fights to the ground?

I’d say a glock 23 with 135 grain corbon hollow pts. or a benelli super 90 with buckshot. that should solve the problem. remember, don’t take a knife to a gun fight.

How about an Ithaca Mag 10 or a Pancor Jackhammer, while we’re at it?

I’d say Jeet Kun Do. Have on;y studied for a little while, but it seems to have an answer for evetything

It depends on whom I’m fighting and where. I would ALWAYS prefer to finish the fight on my feet if possible. Taking someone to the ground if you’re in a place like a parking lot always carries the possibility of some potentially nasty cuts and abbrasions no matter how good you are; if I could knock him out on his feet I would. But if it’s an organized fight in a cage or ring or a regular fight on grass or something, I’ll probably wind up taking the guy to the ground more often than not (that’s where I personally feel the most comfortable). As far as what styles I prefer for one on one fighting, I’m convinced that boxing, Muy Thai, and jiu-jitsu are absolute musts. If you’re to be a complete fighter, you have to be able to fight everywhere (standing or on the ground).

Hands down…Philipino Kali. When you absolutely, positively have to bust someone up with a stick or a pick, accept no substitute…

Smith & Wesson

I would have to agree most with the sprinting comments but if I was to pick one group to train with for weapons it would be the Dog Brothers for sure. Those guys are as hard core as it gets. “higher consciousness through harder contact.” No one in stickfighting is anywhere near as real as these guys.

U want martial arts exclusively for self-defense (or so it seems). ll be the first to admit I dont know every single martial art around, but i think i know a bit more about the subject than some of these guys. for practical self-defense, check out KUN TAO, and KRAV MAGA. KALI is awesome AS AN ART. Sure ull pick up a few kool moves, but its not very practical at all, especially if you dont have access to a stick (no, ur dick wont do sorry). JIU JITSU and BOXING are awesome as well, but i would love to know what the hell r u gonna do if the guy is trying to slash you with a knife. I dont think trying to block him up and punch him will do shit for you. Now that i got that out of the way, Ill recommend Krav Maga and KUN TAO. Krav maga is an israeli martial art about 50 years old, and will teach you how to fight on the ground , standing up close stance, and wide stance. Because its only 50 years old id recommend it before KUN TAO, simply because its easier to apply it to today's situations, then kun tao, which started out when a sword was the most deadly weapon around. Nonetheless, KUN TAO is about THE most badass martial art u can learn. U wont learn how to fight air, and practice ur pretty kicks and punches. Ull learn how to fight in every possible situation, u name it- fighting someone with a knife or a bat, fighting close stance, wide stance, fighting on the gound, using presure points, multi-man attack - trust me, ull be WAY ahead of anyone who doesnt know KUN TAO. Itll teach you MANY fatal moves as well as restraining moves just in case u dont wanna wind up on a cell for 25 years. DON'T, I repeat, DON'T take up karate, tae kwon do, or any other martial art that's been commercalized too much. These money makers will teach you how to look pretty when u punch and kick, but will do nothing when someone comes up to you with a knife or a bat. What r u gona do, block his basebll bat with your arm? I dont think so. Having said all this, I TRULY believe Kun tao and krav maga are among the best martial arts around. U may also want to check out CAPOEIRA, a brasilian martial art. Just keep in mind a simple rule - ALL martial arts are good to some extent; some are awesome for self defense, while others apply more to fighting shows. Jeet Kun Do or Kung Fu are an example of this. for example ull be taught to kick the thigh instead of the knee, wich will cause pain, but wont bust ur knee cap. Also, make sure u get some training in grappling because, forget what the other guy said,U WILL end up on the ground if u fight long enough. knowing how to fight someone standing up is a total different beast than fighting on the ground. Hope this helps
