MarkKO's Training Log

Woke at 259 lbs, looking maybe a bit less bloated. Back still tight but there’s a reason for that.

Yesterdays training

3x10 bracing hip thrusts with 10x10 seconds bracing 90/90, shoulder distraction, air squats and sled pushes

I figured I’d squat because my back felt ok squatting. It also held up fine during warmup sets, so all I did was wear my belt just to be safe.

Got a text from Mrs KO KO warmups saying could I pick munchkin up as she was running late. A bit annoying, since she said she’d do pickup but whatever, no big deal. Figured I’d just hit squats and leave the rest. Knew I’d be pushed for time too but figured I’d make it.

Squat
Worked up to
5x2x297 lbs
20x297 lbs

All with 10 second rests

Around rep 17 I started feeling like I was getting stabbed in the back of my head. It’s happened before during squats, usually higher reps or with the short rests. Not fun, but not unexpected.

Except when I racked the bar it was really fucking bad. Maybe 8 out of 10 bad or more. Rolled around on the floor a bit, got my wraps and belt off and after a couple of minutes stood up so I could get an ice pack - usually sitting with the ice on the back of my neck for a while fixes the pain.

Now the fun starts.

I had to strip the bar and get going though. So I’m hobbling around the gym trying to hold the ice on my neck while in between stripping the bar and packing up all the while just wanting to curl up in a dark corner until the pain goes away.

Got into the car and started driving and told Mrs KO I was on the way but might be a bit late. She says she got going already so I may as well just go home. This turns out to have been a good thing.

Head kept absolutely killing me all through the drive. As I approached home started feeling nauseous, ended up dry heaving in the car port for a little, then again when I got in the door. That’s new, and did nothing to help my head. Got some frozen peas and sat with them on my head. Didn’t do shit. Took a bunch of ibuprofen and lay down. Still no good.

By this time Mrs KO and munchkin were back. Ended up having a hot shower which helped (go figure), but not before more dry heaving. Went back to bed and turns out only really comfortable position is foetal. Except my hands kept going numb which woke me up.

By this time I was completely fucked. Got up at 1400 today. Back still stiff because I didn’t do shit to stretch it. Head still tender as fuck.

Very weird, was the head pain a stress headache from the squats or do you think it has something to do with your recent back twinge or ilness ??

Have you tried to get your traps and neck massaged and add some heat to loosen them up. I find this helps a little if it is pressure headaches ?
Numbness in the hands and arms can also be a sign of the neck being really tight. As you may recall I have an issue with C5 in my neck due to an old motorbike accident and when my neck is tight I usually wake up in the night with numb arms and hands. Try massage and hot bath tonight.

Fuck mate, I have no idea. But it could be a bit of everything

Costs nothing to get the misses to give you a nice trap and neck massage and then have a bath. Do it anyway. :sunglasses:

Fuck mate, that sounds fucked!
Maybe you popped a vessel or something back there, twinged a nerve or some shit. I used to get a fair few headaches up the back of my head and neck, especially when squatting, my blood was quite thick, right on the limit when going to donate, doesn’t seem to happen anymore since I lost 15kg and got it in check.
Maybe a visit to the doc is in order. Do you have ringing in your ears?

Check on the ringing. It isn’t constant but it’s there a lot. I did my bloods and had my blood pressure checked about a month ago and everything was fine though.

Blood vessel pop is possible. My head just feels bruised is the best way I can put it. Even air squats took the pressure in my head up to a painful level when I got up

I think this is a pretty good guess. There are a bunch of nerves and blood vessels running in between muscles around your neck. Massage time😂

This was what I was thinking through the whole post. Just watched a video on blood pressure from Fouad Abiad on YT. Keep checking your BP and of course see a doctor…and feel better mate!

Yeah Mark, get that shit sorted out. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.

Woke at 262.1 lbs, looking more bloated but not by that much. Head feeling almost normal, back too. Still tired as shit but tbh that’s just my normal.

Speaking of which, sleep clinic called and I have a follow up on Friday so I’ll find out what’s what then. Fingers crossed its apnea so I can get a CPAP and sort this shit out.

I’ve got constant ringing in my ears (work, concerts and loud music) but when my blood was a little dodgy and thick it was intense, I remember sitting around a campfire and it feeling like it was so freaking loud!

That sounds like a fucked up experience. I hope you get it sorted out. Count me as another vote for you to see a doctor.

When I read your post I was thinking maybe a burst blood vessel in the head. Subdermal haematoma can cause those symptoms. I had this happen in my late 20’s and the Dr just prescribed rest. It was a pretty self regulating injury, basically an activity that raised my heart rate or blood pressure caused my head to hurt like someone was drilling into it. I had a few days off, tried to train and after 15mins aarrggghhh. Had a few more days off and did some light activity, minor headache. Couple more days off and tried again, no headache, good to go.
I’m pretty sure mine was from holding my breath on squats.
Might be worth you popping to the Dr just to get checked out. If it is a small bleed it should heal itself and if you try to train you will know pretty quickly if it is.

Shit man that’s no good.
I’m plus one on seeing a doctor.
Hope it gets sorted soon mate

You guys rock.

I’m feeling better but my head does feel tender and/or bruised. Kind of fits, I guess.

Ended up resting because work ran really late, which annoyed me but probably is a good thing. I’ll bench tomorrow and do accessory day Friday. No deadlifting seems like a good idea given both my head and my back

Glad you are feeling better. Just watch your blood pressure when you train and judge how it effects your head. Try not to hold your breath too much.

That’s why DL will be out this week. With my back on the mend I’d be bracing hard as shit so BP would be high. Hell, even bench might be off limits tomorrow. Who knows?

Just read the Mayo Clinic bit about subdural haematomas. Sounds pretty spot on. Fuck I’m lucky I didn’t cark it, Mrs KO would have killed me.

Lmao. Mate I’m hoping it’s not that, but even if it is then with rest it should clear up. If you are at all worried it may still be worth seeing a quack.

After googling Aussie lingo this is pretty funny  I can relate.
