Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

I’ve heard of running, but all the descriptions of it made me feel faint and hungry…

Running? That’s how I approach the fridge! If you can call it that.

Thanks eco. We used to run a weight man’s 4x100 relay in high school. It was pretty funny. Imagine a 4x100 put together with the guys on this forum. Not the fast guys like joegood or Fischer. I’m thinking mj should be the anchor. You would make a good first leg. I have a feeling bunny is too fast to even be one of the legs.[/quote]
In high school our throwers were 2 linebackers, a tightend, and a fullback. We could almost beat the regular relay team. Many years ago.

So I take it you two won’t be volunteering to run one of the legs?

hel, sounds like they were pretty impressive.

C&J: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, (95x1)5

5/3/1 Cycle 2 Week 4, Military deload
24x5
31x5
37x5
bbb Military: (37x10)3
Lat Pull Downs: (140x10)3

4/30
Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, (68x3)2
Snatch High Pulls: (85x3)2
Clean High Pulls: (100x3)2

52x5
62x5

bbb SG Deads: (57x10)3
Dips: Bwx6,6,6

Well I survived the deload week without doing anything extravagant. I was sorely tempted today. It has been nice not hurting anywhere for an entire week, but I’m ready for hard work again.

5/1
Throwing
6k Shot 41 full throws after usual warmup, worked on pushing hips through, balance. best ~45’
25lb Weight 11 three turn throws, some 16+m(~54’) competition legal throws, worked on keeping left foot down, balance.
25lb weight for distance, Highland Games style: 10 two turn throws, tried to get a feel for the rhythm, so that I end up throwing the weight rather than it throwing me. Best about 45’.

Sprints 50mx4, 100mx1 in 16.79s. (only 1.79s to go)

5/3
Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, 70x2, 75x1, 80x1, 85x1, 90X1, 95x0, 87x1,1,1,1,0

5/3/1
Cycle 3, week 1, Squats 118kg working max
90x5,
95x5,
100x7

Front Squats: (77x5)3
Squats: (61x10)2
Pullups: Bwx4,3,3,3,3

Not so strong today.

Snatch technique felt good. I’m getting better at waiting on the 2nd pull, but still not so good with the constant back angle.

No juice on the squats, Should have stopped at 7, but I couldn’t help but try for 1 more. Could barely get the 8th out of the bottom.

On the assistance, instead of straight bbb squats, this cycle I’m going to do 3x5 front squats at 70% of C&J max, and as many sets of the 10 rep back squats as there’s time for. Today that was two sets. Pullups were a little weak too.

The 4th snatch at 87:

The missed 5th attempt:

The squats:

And the first set of front squats:

Rack Jerks: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 90x3, 97x3, 102x3

58x5,
62x5,
65x10

bbb Bench: (48x10)5
DB Rows: (55x10)5

Front Squats on Monday are already doing their trick. Was able to keep a more vertical back position on the drive portion of the jerk and ended up with a new rep pr 102x3. Legs were a bit wobbly from the squats yesterday, but the drive was powerful enough.

On the 5/3/1, 65x10 is a new projected max by a fraction of a kg. I was expecting 8, hoping for 9, and dreaming for 10. So today was quite a bit better than Monday.

Nice! I’m jealous of the bouncy plates. My squat fails are nowhere near that graceful…

Nice work, Carl, great job on the money set.

Cool videos Carl. Nice work in here. I have never done any O lifting before, seems more athletic to me than powerlifting.

i would really love to learn the lifts and compete, but with my knee trouble it would be hard to squat under a heavy snatch or clean. plus, there’s no time for learning new stuff with 2 jobs. but I won’t have 2 jobs forever, and then we’ll have to test the knee…

soldog, yes bouncy plates are fun. You can be jealous of my bouncy plates, and I’ll be jealous of your squat rack.

Thanks jjackkrash, if I can’t keep up with the guys here on weights, I can at least try to keep up with effort.

Thanks Colin. Olifting is a blast. It is more athletic than powerlifting in that, except pure strength, more of everything, flexibility, balance, quickness, technique, is needed, and at top levels, you need just as much strength. That’s one reason I was never a top level lifter.

mj, learning the olifts would be time consuming. I don’t see how you pull off consistent training as it is. The knee might not be as much a problem as you think. My left knee is a bit tweaky making parallel squats painful. Full squats, cleans, and snatches rarely cause any pain.

Shoulders are worn out. Didn’t even think of pushing under the 110 jerk, On the militaries, I got 7 reps at 55 four weeks ago and 7 at 56 seven weeks ago. Think I’ll skip dips tomorrow and throwing this weekend to rest them up.

Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, 70x3, 76x3, 81x3

Cycle 3, Week 1, Deadlifts, working max 127kg

No assistance work. I’m going to go rest up hard this weekend.

I seriously envy you Oly lifting, I’d wreck my self trying that.

Thanks Joe. I can’t deadlift 405+ anymore, (maybe again in a year), so I make do with this esoteric stuff.

5/10

Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, 70x2, 76x1, 81x1, 86x1, 91X0, 94x0, 87x0,0,0, 88x1,1,1,0,1,1

5/3/1
Cycle 3, Week 2 Squats Training Max 118kg
95x3
100x3
106x6

Front Squats: (80x5)3

Squats: (62x10)2
Pullups: BWx4,4,3,3,4

The usual thing was going on with the snatch misses, not being patient enough on starting the second pull. Got that worked out to some degree on the 88s.

6 reps on squats at 106 was not a pr, but it was close. I won’t complain. Front squats were a little heavier and a little easier than last week. Pullups had a slight improvement over last week also.

That snatch looked freaking fast. Nice work.

Thanks Jack, Its timing and actively pulling yourself under the bar.

Rack Jerks: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 87x3, (93x3)3

Didn’t have time for bench presses and assistance today due to a 12:00 meeting. Will get those in tomorrow. Slight timing issues, pushing too early with my arms, made the first set at 93 harder than it should have been. The last set was pretty solid.

Carl’s got the best-looking quick lifts of anybody on the forum.

Thanks Tony.

5/3/1 Cycle 3, Week 2, Bench, Training Max 77kg
60x3
65x3
69x8 (projected pr)

BBB Bench: (50x10)5

These sure are a lot easier when I don’t do the jerk triples beforehand. Pretty satisfied all around with this session.

Carl, I don’t comment here usually, because I am an Oly virgin and spend most of my time here in a state of confusion. Well, and then there is the whole snatch thing. Every time I see someone perform a snatch, I expect to see splintered elbows. I actually cringe until the lift is done.

Just so it is said, though, you do some great work. It is interesting and fun to keep up with.
