Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

Thanks LS. I understand about the confused part. When I go to PeteS or ouroboro’s logs, I am confused too. I know what straps up or down and that kind of thing mean, but I don’t know what it feels like. I just have no basis for understanding the significance.

I never hurt my elbows doing snatch, but I did hit my nose with the bar once. I wasn’t around to see the results, but it must have looked pretty funny.

I would be in pieces on the floor if I tried that. That is awesome stuff CD!

That is a very good comparison.

Your nose?? OW! I’m not sure funny is the word I would use.

first time i tried to snatch was in HS with 135. did not lock my elbows, and crashed down onto the thin spot on the top of my block. surprisingly, i did not lose consciousness.

the 2d time was with 95 lbs last week (just mucking about, I had to pick the bar up and put it in the rack anyway, so i figured what the hell). I didn’t lock out on the catch, but i pressed it out before I stood up. it looked alot like what I imagine a rhino taking a shit to look like.

LS, as embarrassed as I was when I came to with the bar across my lap and blood streaming out my nose, it must have been funny.

So mj, you have been successful on half your snatches. Rhino taking a shit? I thought they just kinda dropped it as they walked along.

Good day today, 110 on the C&J was a pr, 6 at 57 on the militaries was at least satisfactory, and I got all the BBB stuff without dieing. Now I can go home and take a nap with the kitten.

alright on the C&J PR. It looked as good and easy as many of your other vids.

“nap with the kitten” - FTW

Great C&Js and MPs. As always love the videos.

x2 Looked nice and strong. I had to watch it a few times, though. I was distractd whilst converting metric to a real measurement  or at least one that I can relate to.

Nothing relaxes quite like a kitten’s purr.

x3 squared!! Great work. I love watching your O lifts. More film! More film!!

OG, thanks for dropping in. If you want proof that you are not the only one crazy enough to do sprints, I do them on Saturdays after my throws. This summer I’m going to try to work them in twice a week. I hope I have finally (many strained hamstrings and calves later) learned to get the volume up before trying to do anything less slow.

George, Skip, Steve, Wilson, thanks. It turns out the kitten didn’t want to cooperate. She spent the whole time alternately trying to put her nose in my mouth and then her butt in my nose. After half an hour of this, I gave up and went to read a book. And Skip, 110kg is about 4871lbs I think.

I was close! My abacus wouldn’t go that high, though.

Throwing
Shot 6kg 30 throws to ~45ft
25lb Weight 13 3 turn throws
25lb weight HG style 10 two turn throws. These didn’t go any further than last time, 40-45ft, but they went with much less effort. I was feeling the timing and balance better than on previous sessions.

Sprints 50mx1, Left hamstring felt tweaky, so stopped there.

Rack Jerks

Another afternoon meeting, no time for Bench today.

Very strong jerks. The more I watch your lifts the more I see the wisdom in the oly lifts for the throws.
Ran into a local High School coach who Oly lifts. Goes to a gym in the town next to us, about 25 miles. Set up for oly lifting and they’ve got a club and getting ready for some comps. Says I’ve got a standing invite to come lift with them. Going to try and work it in. Flexibility will definitely be an issue but it’ll be fun to see some real oly training. (and just maybe I’ll get to drop some weights).

be worth it just to drop the weights!

Hey Carl, i tried to add some overhead squats at the end of my session yesterday. my hip and back flexibility seems pretty okay, but my shoulders not so much. the main burn i felt was in my posterior delts just holding he weight back far enough to keep my balance. i used just the bar, then added some tens, kept it real light.

from a technique standpoint, what are the things that I need to work on/cue myself in order to get my ohs to something that can 1 day become a snatch?

Also, i noticed that when you front squat, your hands are out pretty wide. I tried that yesterday and almost dropped the bar. any good advice on getting the “rack” right? And for each of the lifts, how do you decide on hand position vis a vis the clean/jerk and the snatch?

thanks tons for any help
old lardass

Those were damn fine jerks man.

Damn big jerks Carl. I’m like Harry, I wanna drop the weights again too.

Thanks Harry. Definitely take advantage of the offer when you get the time. Olympic lifters are much like throwers, although more intense in my experience. And dropping weights is not only fun, but makes the lifts easier to practice.

Thanks Joe and Wilson. Slowly but surely getting less weak.

MJ, I can think of a couple things that might help. The weight goes forward in an OHS primarily because of two things: Back is leaning forward or lack of shoulder flexibility. Besides just being aware of it and trying to keep your back more vertical, you could try elevating your heels a little. The weightlifting shoes we wear have 1/2 to 3/4 inch heels that help with joint angles for OHS and front squats. If you don’t have suitable shoes, you could put your heels on some 5lb plates. As for the shoulders, dislocates are the primary thing I do to maintain and improve shoulder flexibility. A more immediate fix is to widen your grip. At 6ft tall, I grip the bar about an inch inside the collars. If you are taller, you might want to try gripping all the way out to the collars. A wider grip makes it easier to keep the bar back, but tends to be a little less stable.

On the front squats, I like as wide a grip as I can comfortably get, since that makes the jerk easier. As you found out, a wider grip is less stable. Here I would recommend a grip that is stable and comfortable. Just play around to find the advantages of different grips.
