That Juniper will make a long lasting caber, if y’all grow them straight out there. You may have to soak it in water to get the weight right. Nice training Carl. I sure missed reading your log.
Thanks j_willy. It’s a little harder to find than the others, but I’ll start looking for a juniper caber. The advantage is that the snow is already gone from where the junipers grow. I don’t have to wait a few weeks to start looking.
4/17 Throwing
Shot: 7 stands, 5 half spin, 30 full throws. None were remarkable distance wise, but every throw was in the left half of the sector, half of them in the left 1/4 of the sector. Still can’t put them down the sector line at will, so I’ll keep working the right foot turn in the middle.
25 lb weight: 10 3 turn throws, best just below 17m, but 1 perfectly legal throw out at 16.5m. Fist long and legal throw with 3 turns ever. I’m over-rotating like crazy though. Need to get back to some multi-turn drills.
Sprints: 5x50m, a couple in < 8.0s. These felt good today, like when I was a kid and I would run simply because it felt so good to run. Kind of like scratching an itch that wasn’t even itching. The relief without the irritation.
4/19 Lifting
Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, 70x2, 75x0, 80x1, 85x1, 90x0, 93x1 (pr) (86x1)5

96x5
102x3
107x6 (rep pr)
bbb squats: (60x10)5
pullups: (BWx3)4
The miss at 75 was an unintended power snatch that I lost behind, the 90 I simply didn’t pull hard enough. The 93 and following 86s were all very nice. I’ll try to get video up later.
The 6th squat at 107 was very hard, but I’m happy with the number. BBB not too bad, maybe bump it up a kilo or two next time. Only got 3 sets of 3 in the pullups last week, so a slight improvement there also.
Ruglayer, your post seems to have gotten lost in the highland games/caber euphoria. I used to be able to do pullups at will, an easy 12 with no training once in college, just to show up my dad. Damn, he was about the age I am now. I’d like to get it back up there.

Nothing remarkable today.
Solid work Carl.
Carl just watched the vids, still such a beautiful thing to see.
SO much speed, lots of solid work going on.
Thanks joe and kmc.

Throwing.
Well not really. I did 10 sets of turns with the 25lb weight, anywhere from 7 to 9 turns each set. Then did some highland games style turns. First one turn to get the feel, then 4 two turns. These went well, Iguess all the work with weight and hammer over the past few years has taught me some things. I know to wait for the wait and not try to force things and I have a reasonable feel for countering. That and having thrown a lot of discus
(highland games weight throw seems more closely related to discus technique than hammer or weight technique from t&f) makes these feel pretty natural. Have to wait until Saturday to see if the darned thing actually goes anywhere.

Clean & Jerk: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, 95x1, 100x1, 105x1, 110x0, 103x1,1,0,1,1
5/3/1
Cycle 2, Week 3, Military, 61kg Training Max
46x5, 52x3, 58x5
bbb military (36x10)5
lat pull downs: (135x10)4
The misses at 110 and 103 were both on the jerk, weight locked out but too far forward. I might need to add some jerk drives to the mix to help keep the weight back and the dip short on these.
On militaries, I wanted 6 on the money set, but 5 was all that I had today. I’ll try not to think I’m getting weaker, since I got 7 at 56.5 three weeks ago. That day didn’t have clean & jerks preceding militaries and was at low elevation.
Problem I had on the 28, 42, 56 for distance is I kept trying to get the chest out front and get the stretch reflex. You DO NOT want this. Almost ripped my shoulder out on a couple of good pulls. The throw is like the discus but also like the weight throw in that the heavier the weight the more the weight is going to have to create the turn. No real stop at the front. Make sense? As in a lot of things now days, you tube is your friend. Here’s a link for making a ghetto hammer, paragraph 3. Works pretty good.

yeah - all those c&j’s mighta had something to do with a less than stellar MP day. MP’s are really touchy with me. I seem to respond well to high reps with them and really run out quick at the higher weights.
Thanks for the link on building implements. Hammers seem to be the easiest, and besides cabers, the one I need most.
Also, thanks for the technique warning. I didn’t find myself trying to lead with my chest in those practice turns, but maybe when I actually went to throw them I would have. Forewarned is forearmed, (which together with two legs gives six limbs altogether.)
soldog, I suck at militaries whether the reps are high or low, but yes, 5 didn’t seem to hard but 6 wasn’t even close.
Its looks like you and Harry have cornered the market on fun. Great work in here.
No Jack, its an open market. It is a lot of fun, even if I haven’t actually thrown anything yet.
loved watching the oly vids. I just started doing power cleans a few weeks ago, I do them before squats. of course i do them wrong, but I think it has a good training affect for me since I’ve never done them before. plus, i figure if it makes me tired, it must be helping
Thanks mj. With all the people doing cleans and snatches in their training, I’m hoping that someone sometime is going to do something silly and decide to try competing. Cleans do make you tired, so even if you are doing them wrong, they at the very least good for conditioning.

Missed the snatches because of lack of concentration, falling back into old habits and starting the second pull too early. Fixed this on the 3rd and 4th sets.
I’m happy with 9 on the last set of deadlifts. The graphs are showing an almost jjackkrashish increase for this one lift. The bbb stuff almost killed me. I had to rush to try getting it all in. Staggered through my last two classes, went home and took a nap with the kitten.

Throwing
6k Shot 5 stands, 5 half spins, 20 full throws, didn’t go all out on any of these, but as usual was trying to get the right foot turned in the middle. Was trying a new visualization, that of pushing my right knee towards my left knee at the end. Will have to scrutinize the video to see how well it worked.
16lb shot 5 full spins. I don’t have any stones yet so I figured at least getting the weight right would help. Again, not throwing too hard, but did get them out around 37’.
20lb shot 5 stands, best of about 27’. This is as close to a 22lb stone as I have right now.
25lb weight 10 3 turn throws, last one I think I actually kept my left foot in contact with the ring the entire throw. ~905 effort to ~16m.
56lb weight 5 2-turn throws. One to about 21 feet. I was unable to counter very well, the darned weight was dragging me all over.
25lb weight, Highland Games style, 5 2-turns. Then felt a lot better in the gym when I was doing 2 turns without the release. These are going to need a lot of work. Maybe 45’ at the best.
40lb weight (35lb weight with 2 2.5lb plates attatched) Same as the 25lb. Best distance about 21’.
40lb weight for height. 5 throws. Have no idea how high they went. At least I didn’t hit myself on the head.
Sprints: 50mx4, best at about 9.25s, 100mx1 in 17.87s. Damn I’m slow. Goal: by the end of summer, get this down to 15s. Then instead of damn slow, I will only be slow.

Training is looking great. Sprints are a bitch. I don’t even want to know how slow I run these days.
Thanks eco. We used to run a weight man’s 4x100 relay in high school. It was pretty funny. Imagine a 4x100 put together with the guys on this forum. Not the fast guys like joegood or Fischer. I’m thinking mj should be the anchor. You would make a good first leg. I have a feeling bunny is too fast to even be one of the legs.
