And finally the 80x3 snatches from Friday. More back! I have to keep saying to myself.
Yeah jack, I thought you were, but just the same, there is a good point there. The lifts are more meaningful in familiar units.

Throwing
Shot: 7 stands (hard time warming up, I’m feeling the deadlifts from yesterday.), 6 half spins, 40 full spins.
Kinda weak today, didn’t quite get up to 11m (36ft) in the stands, I’ve been around 38’ the last few sessions.
But the half spins were about 1.5m (5ft) further and the full spins were 1.5m more, so not too bad technique-wise. ~14m best for the day. Threw hard the first 15 throws, then scaled back and worked on technique. On the last 25 throws, I thought about very little except for balance and getting the right foot turning hard in the middle.
They were only at about 80%-90% intensity, but they all went at least 12m, the last 5 were all in the 13.5 to 13.75m range. Not only that, but I was staying in the ring more often, much more controlled throws. Got my furthest legal throw of the year at ~13.5m (44’3").
Discus: 3 stands, 10 full spins out to ~41m (134’6"). Slightly better than last time. Had a good wind, but my flight is not smooth enough yet to take advantage of it.
Sprints: 5x50m, last three between 8.0 and 8.5s. These felt good, even though every time I was expecting a calf strain again. Thankfully I got through them undamaged.

Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, 70x2, 75x1, 80x1, 85x0, 90x0, 93x0, 86x0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1,0,1
5/3/1 cycle 2 week 2 Squats 113 training max
90x3, 96x3, 102x7
bbb (60x10)4
pullups (bwx3)3
Snatches, missed the 85 behind after getting halfway up, missed the 90, 93 and the first 4 86s in front. Finally got my head out of my ass and managed to wait the necessary few hundredths of a second longer before starting the second pull and got 4 in a row, missed one behind, and then got 1 more. Got video of these, but will have to wait till Thursday to get it off the camera.
On 5/3/1, 7 on the money set was so-so, tried but failed on an 8th. Ran out of time on the bbb and pullups, but managed 3 on each of the pullup sets.
4/13
Rack Jerks: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 87.5x3, (92.5x3)3
5/3/1 Cycle 2 week 2 Bench 75kg training max
60x3, 63x3, 67x7
bbb bench (46x10)5
DB rows (50x10)4
Jerks were at 90% of 3 rep max, very strong, nice short dip, powerful drive, weight well back, deep split, upper body coming through nicely, good balance.
5/3/1 wanted 8 on the money set, had to settle for 7. the bbb leaves me feeling all pumped up like a damned body builder, but I guess that’s what I need right now.
4/15
Clean & Jerk: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, 95x1, 100x1, 105x0, (102x1)5
5/3/1 Cycle 2 week 2 Military 61kg (134lb) Training Max
50x3
52x3
55x7
bbb military
(35x10)5 (77lb)
Lat pulldowns (130x10)4
Missed the 105 clean and jerk in a way that made me thing anything heavier was not worth trying. The 102s at the end were kinda easy, will up this by 1 kg next time. Was working on shoulders and hips rising together on 1st pull. Think I made some progress, but will have to study the video to know for certain.
5/3/1 was pretty routine, nothing exceptional either good or bad.
Carl - I must say that your oly lifts never cease to amaze!
Thanks soldog. Now if only I can get strong like the rest of you.

Snatch High Pulls: (95x3)2

98x3
104x3
110x10 (rep pr)
bbb
Clean Grip Deadlifts: (67.5x10)5
Dips: BWx4,5,5,5,6 (rep pr)
Very happy with today’s workout. Still working on the hip/shoulder thing on the pulls. Its slowly improving.
10 on the money set was very satisfying, and 6 reps in dips is not exactly strong but might not be meager anymore. The bbb deadlifts weren’t even that bad.
The reps are going to go up quick on the dips@bodyweight once you hit the groove.
Sorry I’m so late watching your videos. They won’t play at work. It’s impressive how deep you get with the front squat part of the clean and the overhead squat part of the snatch. I can’t do either.
All videos should be posted like this, it’s just AWESOME ! I’m also glad to see you back, can’t wait for the throwing vids!
Shrinking Z.
Watching your vids closely I understand where your throws come from and why so many throwers swear by the oly lifts. The initial lift off the floor to the clean is so quick and powerful. Think I’m going to try to concentrate more on the overhead lifts this year. Now if I can just find a gym where I can drop the weights.
Thanks for the encouragement on the dips DCA. sets of ten by the end of this summer and then on to adding weight.
eco, Luck of the draw on genetics and a lifetime of practice (thanks mom and dad). I have lost some over the years. Glad you dropped by.
ZM, I was wondering earlier this week what you were up to. Its good to see you are still around. Thanks.
Hel, I made a terrible mistake today. I went and watched some highland games. The good news is that the national forest in my backyard is filled with cabers and stones of every imaginable shape and size. I already have 25lb, 35lb, and 56lb weights and a 16lb hammer, even if it is on a wire instead of a solid handle. They didn’t have sheaf throw at these games, but it can’t be too much different than shoveling snow (can it?), especially when the snow is wet and heavy and the banks framing the driveway are already 8ft high. I should have stayed home for a nap with the kitten.
So you think you’re gonna take the plunge. I’ve heard that a lot of the highland games out west don’t have the sheaf toss. Poplar’s the best for making a caber. The really big meets have an under 200# class. Did you catch the 2 turn technique used on the weights for distance? Aye, MacDarby has a certain ring to it.
I only saw the C class throwers doing weight for distance, and then it was only the 28 lb weight. Maybe four of the guys did a two turn throw, and only one of them got anything from it.
Where in hell do I get a kilt?
I’ve never been in a meet that went lower than a “B” class. Must have been a good size gathering. If they have a master’s class they’ll probably throw the 42# weight for distance and over bar instead of the 56#. If you learn the 2 turn, you’ll get a lot from it. Pros threw yesterday, A and C class threw today. There was no B class. A class had about 10 guys, C class was 20-25 and there were also about 6-7 women. I found that out about the size of weight used for masters while talking to one of the competitors today. I figure between the 25, 35, and 56 lb weights I have, I’ll be pretty close. Thanks for the link on kilts.
Our forest has aspen, yellow pine, white fir, and mountain mahogany. (Bristlecone and other types of pines further up the mountain, but damned if I going to haul a ~100 lb log 6 miles down the mountain). The mountain mahogany is hard to find in long straight pieces, and besides, even a skinny 15 footer would weigh at least 200 lbs. Its much better for burning than throwing. Then aspen seems a little light, and its hard to find long straight pieces. But the fir and pine are long and straight and of varying thickness. Should be able to choose the weight and length however I want them.

From years of cutting and hauling, try to find a lodgepole, they generally dry light and stiff.
Soldog, we don’t have them around here. Besides the ones I mentioned, Limber pine and one other kind I can’t remember grow here. Nevada is a bit odd biologically, lots of high mountains separated by what is now desert. Makes for a lot of unique local species, but not a lot of variety. Add two species of juniper, one a shrub, and scrub oaks, and that’s about all we’ve got.

Wonder how much it would be to ship you one? they are like trash up here. first thing that grows back after logging or fire.

Joe, one in a while a clean will put me there too.
hel, the lat pull downs are a poor man’s assisted pullup machine for me. My pullups which I do simply for the sake of balance are stuck at a measly 2 reps, [/quote]
I know what you mean. My fat ass does them 3 at a time on my off days. However many sets till I can’t do 3 any more. Maxed out at 9 at 185…I’ve never done chins except when I was in the Marine Corps. Now at 220, it’s 3 at a time. But, they still give me a training effect.
