Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

More throwing today:

4/4
Shot: 5 stands, 5 half spins, 40 full throws. Not very good balance today. At first I worked on the usual, strong right foot turn in the middle, hips to front and chest high at release. Only a few over 14m, but one went about 2cm further than my previous best for the season. Towards the end I was working on left foot trajectory, placement and timing, trying to get it out of the back earlier and bring it across the ring closer to my right leg.

Weight: 6 3 turn throws, just trying to keep in touch with the technique, had two throws past 16m where I was balanced and in the ring at release.

Hobbled around the soccer field again after the throws, it felt a little easier and more like running than last time. Calf seems to be doing good.

Snatch: 50x3, 60x2, 70x1, 75x1, 80x1, 85x1, 90x0, 93x0, (85x1)5, 86x1

5/3/1 cycle 2 week 1 Squats 113 training max
85x5, 90x5, 96x9, (57x10)5

DB Rows: (45x10)4

The 93 snatch was very close, caught it but it was just a tad out front, couldn’t hold it. The 86 at the end was the best technique-wise I’ve done in a long time.
Rushed the last rep on the 96kg squats, leaned forward and lost the groove. Didn’t even try the 10th rep.

Sucks about the strained calf but you are a better man than I doing sprints at all. Give me a bike anyday but running ain’t my bag.

Carl, great training. I’ve been using the 5/3/1 on and off for a bit now. I like its simplicity. Now we just need some more of your cool videos.

Soldog, the calf seems to be better now. Just a minor and annoying thing. I’m not sure I should be calling what I do sprints. The fastest ones recently were in the 9 second range for 50 meters. They still kick my ass.

Eco, it’s simplicity is one good feature, but at least for this nerd, its predilection for statistical speculation is its best. I was going to video the snatches today, but I screwed up charging the camera last night. It stayed on long enough to tell me the battery was dead.

Thanks for dropping by.

I’m not sure if the ‘predilection for statistical speculation’ was what Wendler had in mind when he came up with the program. But you never know.

I doubt it too, eco.

Rack Jerks: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 90x3, 97.5x3, 102.5x2 missed the third.

5/3/1 Cycle 2 Week 1 Bench 75kg training max
57x5, 60x5, 63x10
bbb (45x10)5

Pullups (BWx2)5

Jerks were going along fine, then at 102.5 I hit a wall. Barely was able to keep the second one locked out, and couldn’t even start to push under the third. Triceps are blasted for some reason.

On benches also, locking out the last few inches was the hard part on the last rep. Happy with 10 on the money set though.

Pullups, my usual pathetic performance. Might start throwing in something more to help these along.

Carl,

Thanks for stopping by log - time to return the favor!

It’s interesting to see that you are combing the O lifts with 5/3/1 - I ran 8 or so cycles of Wendler’s program and loved it. Now I’m training with Regis Becker (mid 50s) and Dave Sneberger( late 50s and a discus thrower)!

I’m gonna try and follow your workouts!

NWM, my technique is fairly solid, so I don’t need a lot of reps on the olifts, but my low strength levels hold me back. Thus the 5/3/1. I’m hoping I can keep the volume on olifts low enough that I’m able to do and recover from the 5/3/1. The assistance lifts built into 5/3/1 give me some leeway here.

I’ve heard of both those guys, but never had the pleasure of meeting them. With good coaching you should take much less time to learn the lifts than I did. 37 years and still not all the way there yet.

Clean & Jerk: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, 95x1, 100x1, 105x1, 109x1 pr, (102x1)5

5/3/1 cycle 2 week 1 Militaries 59kg training max
46x5, 49x5, 52x8
bbb (35x10)4
lat pull downs 100lbsx10, 110lbsx10, 120lbsx10, 130lbsx10

Felt kinda soft on the clean & jerks, missed the jerk on the 4th 102. video at 8:00.

8 reps was a little disappointing on the money set, but managed 4 bbb sets before I “ran out of time”.
130 on the lat pull downs seems like a good place to work, been years since I’ve done these.

Thats some solid lifting. I don’t have the dexterity to to Clean and Jerk without ending up on you tube.

Other than overall strength what are hoping to get out of the pulldowns? Think it will help your throws any? I’m always looking for that one lift. Pulldowns could be it!

Joe, one in a while a clean will put me there too.

hel, the lat pull downs are a poor man’s assisted pullup machine for me. My pullups which I do simply for the sake of balance are stuck at a measly 2 reps,

Late to the game, the story of my life. Great to see you back here Carl. I love your training. Welcome back.

Thanks for checking in j_willy. There’s getting to be so many logs here that its hard to keep track of them all.

Snatch: 50x3, 60x3, 70x3, 75x3, 80x3 rep pr
Snatch High Pulls: (95x3)2
Clean High Pulls: (110x3)2

5/3/1 cycle 2 week 1 Deadlifts (snatch grip) training max 104kg
80x5, 84x5, 88x10
bbb: (55x10)5
dips: BW x 4,4,5,5 no time for 5th set.

Got video of the snatches. Slowly approaching respectable weights again.
The 10 reps on the money set were hard, but not killer, I momentarily (~.1s) considered trying for 11.
BBB deadlifts are stupid. Too much work. I’ll probably bump up the weight next time since I didn’t quite puke this time.

First time getting 5 dips since high school where I did 33 once.

Edit: forgot the high pulls.

Nice work, Carl. That’s a lot of weight to toss over your head in one fell swoop. But damn you and your uppity KGs. Can’t you speak English? Now I feel inadequate working out in lowly unsophisticated lbs.

I’m looking forward to some O-lift vids.

Here’s the 109kg (240lb) C&J from Thursday. Look at my upper back while catching the clean and you will see what I meant by “They felt soft”. I thought I was keeping the bar closer to my thighs when it passes my knees. Something to work on.

Nice work. That was a cool video.

Thanks jack. Here’s the last of 5 on the 102kg (224lb) C&J from Thursday. This is more what they should look like, but the bar is still getting too far away from my thighs.

Carl, you don’t have to post in lbs., I was just jerking your chain.
