6kg Shot 5 stands, 5 half spins, 30 full spins, best of 48’2", several over 47’, trying for a good wrapped up power position. succeeded sometimes. Those were the longer throws. Throws were still to the left side of the sector, so I’m apparently still turning the feet and waiting on the throw well.
25lb weight: 10 three turn throws, hit low 50’s staying in the ring, then went all out on the last two, threw ~55’, but couldn’t stay in. Main difference in distance came from getting better lift at the release.
LWFD 10 two turn throws, two were over 49’.
WOB Used 32lb weight, 10 one turn throws over 15’ branch. 5 actually went over. When I hit it right, they sailed over with a good margin, but when the timing was off, I was lucky to hit the side of the branch.
Sprints 30m x 8, average of just under 5s on these.
C&J: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, (101x1)5, (104x1)2, (107x1)2, 110x1,0, (113x1)2, 116x0 Both misses were on the jerk, out front. Got close on the 116, just cut the drive a bit short and started pushing under too soon.
Nice work Carl! Did you mention you were going for records at the Master’s meet in Georgia in April? If so, I am planning on lifting there as well - hopefully I will get a chance to meet you and say, “Hi!”
Thanks punnyguy. Next time maybe I’ll be able to think of some words to go along with it.
Thanks NewWorldMan. Not planning to go for any records. A 141 C&J is out of the question, With luck I’ll be in the mid 120’s by April. A 112 snatch would require an increase of 1kg each and every week between now and then. Not impossible, but unlikely to the point of being fantasy. A 7-8kg increase in each lift between now and then would give me a good chance of winning, so that’s what I’m shooting for now. Currently I’m at 100 and 115. I’ve been reading your log in that other place. I see you are up to 85 in the snatch. That’s good steady progress from last August.
Can I ask if it’s not too personal a question what your resting heart rate is? As someone who trains entirely for power (o-lifts, throwing, sprints) and I’m assuming doesn’t do any endurance activities, I would be interested to know, because I can’t escape that nagging voice in the back of my head that says I must do cardio for my heart health.
Great lifting as always. You make it look effortless.
Middle 50’s, sometimes lower. At the moment, 2 hours post workout, just done teaching a class, its 76. From past experience, it will slowly decrease, but stay above 60 tonight, and be back to normal by morning. You are right about no endurance activities.
Thanks. I look at those videos and think “Damn, it sure didn’t feel that easy.”
Thanks alexus. It never occurred to me that long arms were something to complain about. It helps with leverage on the pulls and gives me an excuse for my poor jerks. And as a thrower, they are a tremendous advantage.
Throwing 1/15/2011
6kg shot: 5 stands, 5 half spins, 30 full spins. Threw hard first 20 throws, got a 2 foot season best at 50’2", 10’ differential from my best standing throw. Arm strike is a bit late, could feel it in my elbow, but still turning and waiting well. All throws were on the extreme left side of the sector, or even out of sector a little on the left. Backed off on the last 10 to about 85% effort, trying to throw 40’-45’ and stay in the ring.
25lb weight, 10 three turn throws, best of 56’2", another season best. the hammer turns I do during the week seem to be paying off. These were more controlled that usual.
LWFD: 10 two turn throws, best of 52’3.5", not sure but I think another season best.
WOB: 34lb weight, 15’ branch. 10 one turn throws. Didn’t get any over the branch, but touched it on the last six.
Damn…you make all those lifts look so easy. Your vids are inspiring (though I do not lift oly style) it just makes me feel the urge to move heavy weights. Your training is top notch.

The biggest reason to complain about long arms is when benching is involved.
Then, quite simply, long arms suck.
I suppose long arms do make the jerk harder as well. Hadn’t thought about that before.
