Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

Great work Carl. Someday I want to snatch like that.

Thanks Schmidt. If you are ever in Las Vegas, look at the usually snow covered peak to the northwest. That’s Mt Charleston where I live and work. The camp I work at is at 8500 ft on the east side of the mountain. It is very beautiful, especially this time of year.

Thanks John. Seems to me you are doing everything you have to right now to eventually get there. I hope it takes you less time than it is taking me.

Training 1-17-2011

C&J: 60x2, 72x2, 82x1, 92x1, (102x1)5, (105x1)2, (108x1)2, (111x1)2, 114x1, 116x1, 117x1

5/3/1 C9 W2 Bench
75x3
80x3
84x4

93x1, 75x5,5,5
Pendlay Rows 70x6,6,6

Nice! I see you had the sunshine today

The outfit. It works. Probably helps you jerk more knowing you’re so stylin.

i never thought about it but, yeah, i guess it is further to lock out long arms when jerking. i’ve just been grumping about my chin-ups. i’m sure one day i’ll grump about my bench. i wondered about the view. looks like a nice place to train in. nice legs btw (i’m a bit obsessed with them since it is year of the leg and all).

Very nice looking C&J Carl, looked really explosive from the floor.

117 on the c/j is a recent times PR, yes? It looked nice and fast

Training 1/18/2011

Power Snatch: 50x2, 60x2, 68x2, 72x2, 77x2, 81x2,2,2,2,2, but missed the second rep on the last set
High Hang Snatch: (81x1)4

5/3/1 C9 W2 Squats:
99x3
105x3
111x7

123x1, 133x1

Front Squats: (100x5)3,
Back Raises: BW+25kgx10,10,10

Unlike previous weeks, today’s workout was very hard. I’m thinking it has to do with the cold I’m fighting off. I’ll wait to see if next week is easier before making any changes.

Jerks are looking quick; nice pulls on the power snatches, and the squats are looking solid!

George, yes! Looks like at least a week of the warm bright stuff.

Thanks snapper. That’s the cute little outfit I get to wear when I compete. My wife says it makes me look a little pudgy. I say the suit has nothing to do with it. Its my pudginess that makes me look pudgy.

Thanks alexus. Everything follows where legs go.

Thanks Joe. They’re coming along.

John, that is a recent pr. Every week I try to up it by a kilo or two. Thanks.

Thanks NewWorldMan. Now if I could just figure out how to keep my hips forward on those jerks, then standing up with the clean would be the limiting factor and all I would have to do is get stronger.

great squats carl. Any pointers on how I can learn to squat with my back erect? I don’t seem to be able to do that very well, even if i put 10 pounders under my heels

John,

High bar, pushed up against but not on top of the seventh cervical vertebra (had to look up the singular form of vertebrae).

Feet with heels about shoulder width, toes pointed out 10-20 degrees. Play around with this.

Back arched and locked in tight.

Head straight forward, or maybe a little up.

Raised heels. The 10 pounders should be good enough.

Sit straight down between your feet.

If you can’t get into the bottom position without rounding your back, then you will need to improve hip and maybe ankle flexibility. As with anything new, start with just the bar and move the weight up only when you can do the current weight properly.

It seems that I try to push the weight up and back with my shoulders, but I’ve been doing it for so long that I am not really aware of this part anymore. I just think “keep tight and explode up.”

There’s a really nice video from Dan John that shows how to squat (as well as the RDL position for O-lifts):

Luckily for you, the squat part in first in the video.

Training 1/19/2011

Power Cleans: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 90x3, 95x3, (100x2)4, 102x2
High Hang Cleans: (100x1)4, 102x1

5/3/1 C9 W2 Snatch DL:
110x3
116x3
123x7

131x1, 139x1, (110x5)3

Leg Raises: Bw+3.75x7,8,8

A little easier today than yesterday.

wow, that’s a lot of Snatch grip DLs!

Look like you are trying to keep the 2nd pull position at the top of the lift, am I correct?

Entertaining, and educational videos, as always.

Thanks so much for posting your squats. I’ve been having trouble with figuring out what I’m up to with those because most of the people at my gym who do deep oly style front and back squats for reps (so I can compare) have shorter limbs. I think my form is okay  Now just to get these legs stronger…

NewWorldMan, yes, I try to do deadlifts as close to the bottom half of a snatch (or clean) as possible. The pushing the weight back after it passes my knees is giving me some trouble.

Thanks punnyguy.

You’re welcome alexus. Give it some time. My squats improved for a couple months before my lifts started to follow, but the lifts are catching up with a vengeance now.

Great work Carl. Good to see the lifts progressing so well. Any chance you’re going to lift in the LV Open on Feb 5? John Broz is running the meet.
