Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

You’ve got the notation right Brett. The reason for doing all the lifts at sub-maximal weights is to practice technique. At the lighter weights, my technique stays together pretty well, but often breaks down at heavier weights. This slow approach gives me a higher percentage of quality reps at heavy weights than moving up more quickly does. As the weight moves up, the technique changes slightly. You might have noticed that when I do miss a lift, its usually the first of the two at a given weight. Even when I get both lifts at a given weight, the second is almost invariably better than the first. This gives me a chance to correct the form before moving up again.

I’d really like to see you smash that world record, Carl, so get to work.

That makes perfect sense. I guess I was thinking of it as a squat or a deadlift and neglecting the massive “skill” component. I had noticed how you often can miss a lift a couple of times and then make it. And come to think of it when I do 5 sets of snatch as a warm up my last 2 sets are always my best.

screw lifting and throwing, your movie-fu is greatly improved!

Outstanding lifts and all your throws are just taking off. A world record. Damn! Now that’d be something special.

Ok Jack. Will continue to work hard and make it happen.

Yeah John, I can apply a wicked deinterlace filter now.

Thanks Harry. I need to get more consistent and figure out how to make good throws on a moments notice, instead of somewhere in a 10-20 throw session.

Getting a bit behind on the log. Here’s the last two days of training:

1/5/2011

Power Cleans: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, 90x3, 95x3, 97x3

131x3
146x4

153.5x1, (123x5)3

Leg Raises: Bw+2.5x10,10,10

Nothing remarkable here, but damn my hamstrings are sore now.

So what happened at 76? lose focus?

Nice job on hitting 100!

Very sweet. Had to watch that vid more than once.

Congrats on hitting the 100 kg. What’s your all-time best?

Nice snatching. I run your videos over and over to see what I should be doing. It’s amazing to me how you can hold that 100kg at the bottom for so long.

Thanks George. I don’t think I had achieved any focus yet. Missing the 76 kinda woke me up.

Thanks snapper. Best ever are 112.5 in competition, 117.5 in training. Done way back when when I was a grad student, middle to late 80’s, then once again about 8 years ago.

Thanks Tony. If I could just get the darn thing back enough, I wouldn’t have to stay in the bottom so long. It’s not so hard holding it there if everything is locked and tight. I need to figure out how to get my knees out of the way better, so the bar can have a backwards trajectory off the floor, rather than vertical the way is usually is. That should help with the placement problem. And I still need to fix that damn elbow tweak. Its better, but still there.

Getting back to your best as a youngun is a hell of a feat. Great going. Looks like I’m going to be able to make Houston.

Not there yet Harry. 12-18kg is a long way to go.

Glad to know it about Houston. I’m sending my entry in as soon as I can figure out exactly where its going to be. I got two sons living there. Makes it easier to spend the money for the trip.

i am now rethinking my goal of snatching 200 by the end of the year. may need to revise that downward.

That looked like real great control in the bottom there. I am finally making a little flexibility progress in being able to squat deep with an “erect-ish” back, but its gonna take a lot more work, but when I am there I am weak as a baby. when young in the oly lifts, did you do any particular exercises to get stronger in the bottom position?

Awesome snatch video Carl.

You are certainly an exemption to this theory that we lose a certain percentage of our strength every decade as we age!

John, snatches, OHS, drop snatches, and just holding snatches in the bottom position. A lot of it is learning the balance and positions, the rest is flexibility and strength.

Thanks Brett. I’m going to make a run at it this year. Most of my goals involve lifetime bests.
