Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

sounds like you were getting some winter there. lifting is looking tres awesome. did you get anything cool for christmas?

Throwing is looking good Carl.

What are your training goals for 2011 Carl?

Thanks John. Nothing that good yet, but I think some 20kg bumper plates are going to arrive soon.

Thanks Joe. If my shot improves 5cm per week, I’ll be where I want to be for Nationals in June.

Brett, 3 main goals this year. First add 10-20kg to my O-lift total and win Masters Nationals in April. Second add a meter to my shot to throw at least 15.5m at Nationals in June. Place doesn’t matter to me here. 15.5m could get me anywhere from 1st to 5th, depending on who shows up. Third, compete at the Master World Championships in Highland Games in August. I can possibly set a skinny old guy world record there. The Open Stone record for the 50+, under 200lb group is 38’6.5" with a 16lb stone and I hit ~41’ occasionally with a 15lb stone in training. Other than that its the usual lift more, throw farther, and run faster than last year.

Training 12/29/2010

Power Cleans: 60x3, 70x3, (80x3)2
High Hang Cleans: (80x2)2

5/3/1 C7 W1 Clean Dead Lift
116x5
123x5
131x7

152x1, (123x5)3

Leg Raises: Bw+2.5x9,9,9

Throwing 12/30/2010

6kg Hammer 5 one turn throws, 50 3 turn throws, best of ~141’, majority between 130’ and 138’. Don’t know if this is right, but by the end, I found that keeping my weight more over my left foot and keeping my back more vertical helped with balance and control throughout the turns. Will have to try that with weight next time and see if it holds true.

Training 12/31/2010

Snatch: 50x2, 60x2, 70x1,76,1 (81x1)5, (86x1)5, 86x1,1,0,1,0,0,1,1, (89x1)5, (92x1)2, 95x0,1, 98x1
Screwed up my shoulder again Monday doing jerks and I guess I was a bit tentative at first on these. But the shoulder felt fine and I finally got my head into it by the 89’s. Two of the misses were behind, so that’s a good sign. Nice to end the year with a PR (the 98 was my best this year), even if it was by only half a kilo.

5/3/1 C8 W2 Military:
54x3
58x3
61x5

71x0

Dips:( BW+7.5)x6,6,6
Lat Pull Downs: 180lbsx7,7,7

Last three snatches. Don’t know what happened with the miss at 95. Weight is off to my left a little. The elbow tweak as the weight nears my hips is still there. More hang snatches are in order.

Same lifts, half speed (if it all works.)

damn carl! nice work to end the year. love the long pause in the hole on the last snatch with the monster growl on the way up

Happy New Year!

And now for some silly stuff, Same lifts synced to Fantomas’s Twin Peaks-Fire Walk With Me.

Thank you all for reading, even more for posting. Have a wonderful and productive new year.

Thanks Soldog. It was a bit out front. That’s the only way it was going up. Gogol Bordello blasting, ten 9-15 year olds downstairs, just about bedtime for me. See you all next year.

Part of the sillyness tonight.

love it - thanks for taking the time to do that! great fun!

My gosh, that was a sexy snatch video. Your lifts are so inspirational to me. Did my first (since surgery) power cleans today with a 20-lb. bar. Hopefully I’ll be C&Jing respectable weights by the end of 2011.

Thanks snapper. That’s great you were able to do some cleans. How did your shoulder like them?

My shoulder, surprisingly, did just fine. But I find that when the bar is too light, the motion isn’t quite right. I never was stellar at this stuff, but I did love it at one time. I never trained anywhere that I could drop the bar and was, thus, quite limited in how far I could progress. In addition, I was taught by a neophyte himself, not someone who really was an expert. The most I could ever C&J was 36 kg at 50 kg bodyweight. I had a nice PM conversation with Glenn Pendlay some time back, who offered his help if I were ever in his neck of the woods. I’ve got a long way to go with my shoulder, though. I still can’t OHP. Sorry for the long answer. Keep motivating me and I’ll steadily improve.

Good news on the shoulder. A chance to work with Penday would be great.

Youve got the bar set high for 2011 Carl. Your training excels as usual! Hope you have a safe and productive New Year

Thanks Wilson. Going to push it hard and see what happens.

Throwing 1/1/2011

6kg shot: 5 stands, 5 half spins, 31 full throws, best of about 46’. Worked on getting wrapped up and holding it as long as I could.

25lb weight: 10 3 turn throws, best about 53. Keeping back vertical and weight more over left foot. This worked sometimes.

LWFD: 10 two turn throws, best of ~49’

WOB 10 one turn throws over 16-17’ branch with 29lb weight. One hit the branch, all others went over, some by a lot, 3 or more feet. Was getting good power into it. Now to work the weight up.

Training 1/3/2011

C&J: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, (100x1)5, (103x1)2, (106x1)2, (109x1)2, 112x0,1 115x1, 117x0
missed the jerks on the 112 and 117, caught but out front on the 112, not even close on the 117. The catch and recovery on the 117 clean was hard.

5/3/1 C8 W3 Bench
69x5
78x3
87x2

92x1, 73x5,5,5
Pendlay Rows 67.5x10,10,10

Does (100x1)5 mean 5 singles at 100? If so why do 5 singles on 100, 103 for 2, 106 for 2 etc and then work up to a max at 117?

Would you not be more likely to hit that 117 without all the extra work beforehand?
