Marathon Runner Looking Dude Dabbling in Oly Lifts

Man, you just totally rock this shit. Always love your vids. Those moves are mesmerizing to me. And your form . . .

Thanks John. It is going real well right now. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and ride the wave for as long as I can.

Thanks snapper.

Training 12/15/2010

Power Cleans: 60x3, 70x3, 80x3, (85x3)3
High Hang Cleans: (85x2)3

5/3/1 C7 W3 Clean Dead Lifts:
113x5
128x3
143x4

151x1, (120x5)3

Leg Raises: Bw+1.25x10,10,10

Not much remarkable today, all planned work got done. The lifts from the high hang are getting more comfortable.

Last set of power cleans and high hang cleans, two heaviest sets of deads.

Carl, my Oldie Forum pov has always been that Harry is The Man. But I believe that it is time for him to share that mantle with you.

I’m a big fan of strength, but an even bigger fan of power. Impressive stuff.

Thanks for the vote punnyguy, but have you lost your mind?

Training looks great as usual. Noticed you threw some power snatches and cleans in, was that just for a bit of training variety?

Apart from allowing you to use more weight due to the lower catch position is there anything else I will miss out on by doing the power snatch v full snatch?

I realise your deadlifts look slow because they are heavy, but are you still trying to explode them up as if you were trying to clean them or are you pulling at a controlled speed for strength purposes?

hey carl, do you use a hook grip when you deadlift? I was doing some snatch grip deads, and I could only keep the thumb in for the first 4, and it would slip out. prolly not doing it right…

Brett, I’m doing the power versions on off days from the heavy O-lifts. Keeps the motion grooved and helps with power output and confidence with new maxes. If I can power clean 105, I don’t get intimidated by a 115-120 full clean attempt.

On the second question, short answer is–not really. Longer answer is yes, but for most purposes its not important, kind of like a body builder hitting pecs from every conceivable angle. At certain levels and at certain times, the difference matters. Longest answer is a short article about applying stress to a force potential surface. I’ll spare you that one.

Those deadlifts were going up just as fast as I could make them and still hold position.

John, I do use a hookgrip on the deads. I reset the grip along with everything else each rep. Otherwise, mine would probably slip out too.

Training 12/16/2010

Hammer turns with 6kg hammer, 164 over 13 sets, 9 to 16 each set.

About set #6 or #7, one of the better ones. I’m hoping that by June I will actually be able to develop some speed. Right now I’m just trying to stay balanced and step at the right time.

I’ve been accused of that many times!

To clarify, I was referring to athletic prowess to age (to a limited extent) ratio. Very graceful turns btw.

Of course, if we look at the whole picture, I have read Harry’s profile, and I will say that he is easily in the running for “The Man” site-wide.

punnyguy, agree with what you say about Harry. Wrong handed throwing is hard, besides all the other amazing stuff he does. Thanks for the compliment about the turns.

Threw some on Sunday, shot and LWFD. Had to cut shot short because the rings were getting wet and slippery. Never did hit any good positions. LWFD went OK. Took about 20 throws, most above 48’ with about 5 above 50’, and one in the 52-53 range. Last five throws I started getting a really good feel for waiting on and working with the weight, and without much effort, these where the 50’+ throws.

Then did some sprints:
30mx5 best at 4.64s
40yx1 at 5.59s
100mx1 at 16.08s I’m still slow as fuck, but able to push a little harder without fear of my hamstrings exploding.

Training 12/21/2010

C&J: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, (98x1)5, (101x1)2, (104x1)2, (107x1)2, (110x1)2, 113x1, 116x0

Jerks were more solid today than last week, I wasn’t pushing back from under the weight as much as usual. Used a different mental cue–trying to think and feel dropping straight under the bar. As long as I keep the dip tight they go right up into a catchable and holdable position. Missed the jerk at 116 because I didn’t keep tight on the dip. I let the lightheadedness from the recovery screw with my concentration.

68x5
73x5
78x5

91x1, 73x5,5,5

Pendlay Rows 67.5x8,8,8

Tons of slushy sloppy snow here. Up to about 2 ft and it never has gotten below freezing. Trees breaking all over and power out. Good thing they have generator backups here at work. Better get back home and keep the fire going.

I have to respectfully disagree with the statement that you are past your prime.

THAT was damn cool as hell…

Makes me want to take up the hammer again. To all watching his vid who’ve never tried it, don’t be fooled by how easy he makes it look. And you’ve gotta do it in a 7’ circle.
Carl, I’m “working with” local management over my “prime” vacation schedule for this summer and Houston. The way our schedules are set up (Mon-Sat) I’ve got to schedule two weeks vacation to make sure there on the Sat and Sun and won’t be scheduled to work Monday. Submitted all the right paperwork and today look at the list to see I’m only scheduled for the first week, thru Sat. Get to talk with the supervisor about it tomorrow. Practicing one syllable sentences and tact right now. “Look, you dumb f…k”, yup, all one syllable. Tactful, too.

wow carl, i would be totally puking. its all I can do to line up 2.5 turns for the highland weight. I can’t even make 3 throws in a row without sitting down. How can you do that many turns? I’d love to be able to do that without vertigo.

Power is finally back on. Most of four days without it makes you appreciate it more. I can simply push a button and have coffee again. Life is good.

snapper, I won’t try to convince you otherwise. Thanks for the optimistic view.

Thanks Wilson, its as fun as it looks.

Thanks Harry. I hope there’s not too much problem arranging the rest of the time off. I got all my entry materials a couple weeks ago. Haven’t sent it in yet. They seem to have changed the track and field venue to a place in north Houston near Bush International Airport.

John, I do get a little dizzy at the end of one of those sets. During the set, I’m too occupied with what I have to do and when I have to do it to notice.

Merry Christmas Carl! - I’ve been there on the power outage before, have agenerator now that I can run on and off during those outages.

Thanks George. Hope your Christmas time is going well. Generators are nice but noisy. My wife and I decided we would rather do without than deal with the noise.

Throwing 12/26/2010
6k shot: 5 stands, 5 half spins, 25 full spins, best of 47’8", but most around 45’
25lb weight: 10 three turn throws, best of 55’8".
LWFD: 10 two turn throws, best of 50’3"
HWFD: 10 two turn throws, best of 32’10"
WOB: 12’ branch, 1 side sling and 1 one turn throw with 29, 32, 35, 37, and 40 pound weights. Below 37 pounds, the throws with a turn went higher, after that they were about the same.

Sprints
30mx5, best at 4.49s
