These 3 age groups are on the same day, different times. When I went to Louisville in 07 the 50-54s had to have 3 fights and a final. It gets long. Ever been in Houston in the summer? It’s mid June but humidity’s always a killer there.
Thanks for the information. I thought there would be too many to go together, but you never know.
I lived in Houston for a year, so I know what to expect. Warming up should be easy, but keeping your neck dry enough to keep the shot from slipping off will be a problem.

Not doing any tapering or resting up for the track meet tomorrow, since I’m just trying to qualify for nationals. I can’t quite figure out the requirements, I read somewhere that you need a 4th place or better finish in your state senior games, and elsewhere (in the same publication) that you need a minimum of 37’ for shot, 130’ for discus, and a legal throw for hammer. The distances are trivial. Fourth place or better depends on who shows up, but its unlikely that half the people that can beat me are going to be there this weekend.
First day of the track meet is done. Very modest distances, but no competition, so 1st in the shot with a 13.39m throw and 1st in the hammer with a 40.36m throw. Tomorrow is discus and weight. I was able for the first time ever able to get 3 turn throws in with the hammer. Not real good positions, but I stayed in the ring and had a just a little bit of umpf at the release.
Forgot to mention, the UNLV track team (womens team only) was out helping with the meet. We apparently got a couple sprinters helping with the hammer. Their legs were incredible. If I wasn’t so old, I would not have been able to concentrate on my throwing.
The 88.5kg snatches from Thursday. I’m not looping the weight out as far as I used to. Still need a bit more speed getting under.
Oh I loved watching that vid! I wanna learn snatch so bad. I could C&J pretty well form-wise at one time. Not much weight. But those Oly lifts are so fun.
That is so very impressive to me.
Great to see the snatches Carl, are you still working on keeping the back angle constant like Kendrick Ferris? They looked really good to my untrained eye.
Hey carl, nice snatch!
I told Jeff you were thinking of joining us for some harvest throwing on all hallows eve. he said that would be awesome “Carl’s just a class act”. I hope you can make it out
John, I’ll email Jeff this week and get the details. Now that track is over for a while, I’m going to be doing mostly HG stuff. I’ll start in with the 1000 hammer winds. 25 with the 16lb and 25 with the 22lb today. Some caber and sheaf on Wednesday.
Had the second day of the track meet yesterday with very similar results as the first day. Two firsts but with no competition and very modest distances. A few bright spots technique-wise. For discus, we had a fairly strong wind coming from our right and slightly behind us. I never could figure out how to use it. One throw I got a good angle and good distance, ~44 meters, but the wind took it out of sector to the left.
Another throw had good speed at release, but a bad angle and the wind pushed it down at about 39m Ended Up with 41.54m as my best. Not too bad since I’ve only thrown discus three times in training leading up to the meet. In weight throw, I took a nice and easy first throw. Used three turns and got 15.51m. Couldn’t stay in the ring on the rest of the throws, but I did get that one 3 turn throw in, a first for competition. In any event, as far as I can tell, I’ve qualified for Nationals next June in Houston.
As well run as the first day was, the second day was at least that bad. We were supposed to have discus finished by 10:30, but it was well after 1:00 by the time we got to warm up. I got to watch a bunch of the track meet that I don’t usually notice.
Snapper, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Does your shoulder allow overhead squatting and full front to back (whatever they call that) rotation?
Scotto, I’m still working on back angle, but only indirectly in that I cue on other things, head position and close bar path, that seem to help it.
Great job at the meet Carl. Glad you had a good outing. Your snatch vid was impressive as hell!
Thanks Wilson.

Everything felt just a little stronger than last week, especially the front squats recovering from the cleans.

No way could I overhead squat right now. Or even clean a bar. But I will eventually. And I hope to learn the snatch.
Well then it looks like a bit of waiting for the strength and flexibility to come back. I look forward to you learning snatches whenever it happens.
Got my hammer winds in this evening. Did them is sets of 5, 5 sets with the 16lb and 5 sets with the 22lb hammer. Didn’t try to push them too fast, but rather trying for long arms and a wide radius, with as much hip action as possible. Only 950 to go.

is there a certain point where you will start pushing the speed, or will the speed come naturally with time?
Great going on the meet. really good distances for so little time practicing. They didn’t have the Weight throw at any of the Senior Olys I competed in. Don’t think it’s held at the nationals.
Congrats on qualifying Carl.
I have a question on the snatch. do you actually hit the bar with your hips on the 2d pull, or is that an optimal delusion?
George, I’m thinking the speed will come naturally with time. I’m not holding back on speed now, but opting for positions over speed. When the rhythm gets more natural and I get stronger, it should start going faster.
Thanks Harry. I couldn’t have realistically expected much more this time out. I was also wondering about weight throw at nationals. The Nevada Senior Games has it every year but some of the USATF meets don’t.
Thanks John. The bar does actually hit on the pelvic bone, right above what the wife so endearingly calls the package. It shouldn’t hit hard enough to hurt, but you can definitely feel it making contact.
Training 10/5/2010
Power Snatch: 50x3, (56x3)2
5/3/1 C4 W2 Squats
88x3
93x3
98x7
108x1, 113x1, 118x1
Front Squats: (84x5)3
Back Raises: (BW+7.5kgx10)3
50 more hammer winds tonight.
Edit: I meant to say couldn’t up above instead of could. Fixed it now. I’m really liking the 50 hammer winds per day. Only the second day and they already feel stronger and faster.
